My Girlfriend's a Monster - Chapter 54
As the flames were mostly extinguished, Yan Cheng bent down and retrieved a set of keys from the debris. Zhong Qingxiao understood immediately; the key to the iron door was with the Monster all along.
They left the second floor and headed to the third, sifting through the keys to find the one that matched the iron door sealing the Cold Storage Room. Zhong Qingxiao gently patted Luo Ke’s hand, signaling that he could stand on his own.
He looked stunning today, in every possible way.
Luo Ke pulled him aside to whisper, her slender fingers caressing his cheek as she asked, “Zhong Qingxiao, are you alright?”
“I’m fine, Xiao Ke.” Zhong Qingxiao unconsciously nuzzled her fingertips. As he looked at his girlfriend, a multitude of thoughts flashed through his seemingly calm eyes.
If he had truly been in danger earlier, would Xiao Ke have come to save him? Was she really just playing a game with him, or was she using this as an opportunity to dispose of a partner she had grown tired of?
Did Xiao Ke see him as a partner at all? If she did, would she indulge in a life-threatening game with him?
Reflecting on the moment he approached the Monster, Zhong Qingxiao realized it wasn’t so much that he willingly accepted the game, but rather that he was bewitched. Instinctively, he had stepped toward the Monster.
He knew Xiao Ke was different from these Monsters. He hadn’t been harmed in the game, and he didn’t think it was just luck. Xiao Ke must have been helping him from the shadows.
He couldn’t quite grasp his girlfriend’s way of finding amusement, this side of Xiao Ke seemed disconnected from the one he knew. But perhaps it was just a childish prank.
Everyone was safe now, wasn’t that what mattered? He shouldn’t overthink it.
“Xiao Ke,” Zhong Qingxiao started, hesitating. He wanted to ask if Xiao Ke truly felt human love for him, but the words wouldn’t come out.
Luo Ke leaned in, hugging Zhong Qingxiao tightly. Her arms wrapped around his waist, her cheek nuzzling against his chest.
“Was I too much today? Were you scared?” Luo Ke’s voice sounded particularly remorseful. “I was by your side the whole time.”
“No, Xiao Ke.” Zhong Qingxiao instinctively wanted to comfort her, feeling he was overthinking again and shouldn’t doubt Xiao Ke. “I felt you were helping me.”
He remembered the Monster’s scream in the hallway on the first floor. After that, the Monster’s speed had slowed, and he had noticed.
About ten minutes later, the cold storage door was opened. Yan Cheng rushed in to get the medicine, and Luo Ke took some as well, planning to store them for future use.
There were no survivors left on the fourth floor; the one they encountered earlier was the last.
They didn’t want to get involved with outsiders, so they left some food and water for the man before leaving.
“Save me! Please! Don’t leave me here alone! Help me!” The man’s helpless voice echoed behind them, still weak from the anesthesia, lying alone in a hospital full of grotesque corpses.
Fear was natural; of course, humans would be afraid.
As they exited the hospital, the sunlight wasn’t too harsh, and their vision cleared.
Zhong Qingxiao noticed Yan Cheng’s odd walking posture, Bai Lan’s trembling legs, and Su Sheng’an’s inexplicably wet pants.
He slowly withdrew his gaze, took out two mint candies from his pocket, and handed them to the two teenagers.
He had originally prepared them for kissing his girlfriend today, but they went unused. He smiled warmly at the kids, saying, “You were very brave today.”
As the soft light of dusk reflected in his light-colored eyes, Luo Ke watched him, feeling a bit displeased. Zhong Qingxiao’s warmth should be reserved for her alone. Why did those humans, who did nothing, receive his kindness for no reason?
It seemed particularly unfair.
She grumbled internally, her deep eyes fixed on Zhong Qingxiao.
He looked stunning at every moment today.
“Let’s go,” Luo Ke said, pulling Zhong Qingxiao close to her. She used herself to separate him from the two kids, unabashedly snuggling into his embrace.
Her actions were obvious; through the thin fabric, she lightly bit Zhong Qingxiao.
He inhaled sharply, lowering his gaze with a look of compromise.
His girlfriend’s possessiveness was intense, he could feel it.
“Uh, you two,” Yan Cheng’s expression was still a bit stiff. “Our car is full, we can’t take you.”
Speaking of which, Zhong Qingxiao remembered something: “Didn’t Zhao Xucheng and Qin Mei come with you to the hospital?”
“Yes,” Yan Cheng nodded. “They went to the convenience store. We agreed to meet at the hospital entrance.”
“That’s fine, Xiao Ke and I drove ourselves,” Zhong Qingxiao said, heading toward an old van.
Yan Cheng glanced at it, thinking it unlikely that someone from the Zhong Family would drive such a rundown van. Maybe they just picked one up along the way.
No one would be left behind, and the vehicles drove away from the hospital.
If possible, Zhong Qingxiao never wanted to set foot there again.
As things calmed down, hunger followed. Zhong Qingxiao had expended a lot of energy, and his stomach growled as he drove.
Luo Ke immediately looked over.
Zhong Qingxiao, a bit embarrassed, tried to change the subject: “I wonder what Aunt Luo cooked for dinner.”
But it was futile; Luo Ke wasn’t distracted. She leaned over, reaching to touch Zhong Qingxiao’s stomach.
Such a cute sound. She squinted her eyes.
Zhong Qingxiao really thought some of his girlfriend’s actions resembled a cat, and a cat with peculiar logic at that.
“Can I drive?” Luo Ke suddenly asked.
Zhong Qingxiao was taken aback but agreed. He pulled over, parking the car on the side of the road. The highway was clear, easy to drive on.
However, as soon as Zhong Qingxiao got out of the driver’s seat, he was pulled into the backseat, the seatback instantly reclined, and his girlfriend leaned over him.
The van was indeed moving forward, but not by the engine-it was being towed.
Zhong Qingxiao chuckled, asking, “Didn’t you get a driver’s license, Xiao Ke?”
Luo Ke shook her head, answering seriously, “I don’t like humans yelling at me.”
What if she couldn’t hold back and ended up killing someone?
Dying in front of everyone, she’d end up in prison, right?
Human prisons probably had terrible food.
Their eyes met, and Zhong Qingxiao knew what she wanted.
“I haven’t showered yet,” Zhong Qingxiao said, and being in someone else’s van seemed improper.
“But I can’t help it, you’re so cute,” Luo Ke eagerly nuzzled him. “Can we at least kiss?”
There was no reason to refuse, so Zhong Qingxiao relaxed, nodded at Luo Ke.
A Monster and a human, perhaps a strange and bizarre pairing, but things were as they were. The world had already collapsed, and Zhong Qingxiao didn’t want to struggle with so-called ethics. He could try to understand Xiao Ke’s thoughts, take it one day at a time, right?
A whole day had passed, and Luo Ke’s lip gloss remained perfectly intact, the sweet scent of peach spreading through the kiss. She slowly extended her tongue, tentatively, but Zhong Qingxiao quickly accepted her.
His dear wife was hungry, Luo Ke remembered that, so she pushed the car fast, almost racing down the road. The old van sped past Yan Cheng’s SUV, far ahead, reaching home early, ending the kiss.
Zhong Qingxiao thought, Luo Ke must love him. Though uncertain, he chose to believe it. Human relationships didn’t always last, so he was willing to exchange sincerity for sincerity, to treat Xiao Ke well.
The atmosphere in the car was incredibly intimate. Zhong Qingxiao softly asked, “Do you know how humans date, Xiao Ke?”
Luo Ke instinctively licked her lips, a habit when she felt guilty, though her eyes never showed emotion, so no one noticed.
Dating, of course, she knew. She’d seen plenty on TV and in comics.
But she still shook her head, asking, “Will you teach me, Professor Zhong?”
Zhong Qingxiao was embarrassed by her sudden change in address, shaking his head. “I’m not a professor in this area, Xiao Ke. But I think we can explore it together, at least… so there won’t be another disastrous date like today.”
“Was it that bad?” Luo Ke frowned. She had been happy.
Well… from the Monster sandwich at the start, to being awkwardly carried off the Ferris wheel by Luo Ke, to the final chase, it was an adventure.
Maybe his girlfriend was happy, but Zhong Qingxiao felt that if they had more dates like this, his lifespan would shorten.
“Dates are meant to be relaxing, Xiao Ke,” he said, standing up, pausing to add, “Relaxing for both people.”
Alright. Luo Ke blinked silently.
Back home, Luo Meihua had already prepared dinner. Seeing them return safely, she breathed a sigh of relief.
“Did you find the anti-inflammatory medicine?”
“Yes,” Zhong Qingxiao replied. “It took some effort, but Xiao Ke was a big help.”
The prospective son-in-law’s eyes lit up when he mentioned Xiao Ke. Their relationship seemed really good.
Luo Meihua hesitated, glancing at her daughter still at the sink, then pulled Zhong Qingxiao into the kitchen.
With the sliding door closed, Zhong Qingxiao was a bit at a loss for words at her serious demeanor. Then he heard Aunt Luo ask, “Qingxiao… are you and Xiao Ke using contraception?”
