My Girlfriend's a Monster - Chapter 39
The anguished cry of the cat from the previous night lingered in Zhong Qingxiao’s mind. He was desperate to know if Luo Ke had actually killed the cat, and it was clear that the thought weighed heavily on him.
He wanted to verify the situation, but Luo Ke’s surveillance had become so relentless that he couldn’t find a moment to himself.
During dinner, Zhong Qingxiao noticed Aunt Luo touching her back a few times, so he bravely spoke up, “Auntie, are you feeling uncomfortable?”
He flashed his most convincing smile, lying for the first time in his life, “Xiao Ke is really good at massages. Maybe she can help you after dinner.”
The moment he said it, everyone at the table was taken aback. Luo Meihua looked at her daughter in surprise. After all these years, she had never known her daughter to be so considerate, let alone give massages. And yet, her future son-in-law had already experienced it? Well, well, well, it seems her daughter had forgotten her mother now that she had a husband!
Luo Ke blinked silently, her gaze landing on Zhong Qingxiao. Her eyes were particularly intimidating, and Zhong Qingxiao felt it. Yet, he dared not meet her gaze, focusing instead on his meal, his hands trembling as he gripped his chopsticks, fearing Luo Ke would expose his lie.
Even a brief distraction would be a relief.
Fortunately, Luo Ke shifted her gaze and didn’t say anything to contradict him, allowing Zhong Qingxiao to breathe a sigh of relief.
After dinner, as Zhong Shuping went to wash the dishes, Zhong Qingxiao watched Luo Ke and Aunt Luo enter a room before he quickly slipped out. He nearly sprinted to the 13th floor, remembering that it was where he had lost sight of the kitten the previous day.
He wasn’t sure if he would find any clues, but he had to try.
1302! This was the place!
With a crowbar, Zhong Qingxiao easily pried open the door and stepped inside.
“Meow!!”
As soon as the door opened, the kitten let out a sharp cry, though it sounded stronger than the day before. Zhong Qingxiao paused, his heart lifting. He entered the living room and found a bag of cat food spilled on the floor. Judging by the amount, it seemed freshly opened. The kitten, with remnants of cat food on its whiskers, was hiding beside the bag, watching him warily.
For the first time in days, Zhong Qingxiao smiled genuinely. He crouched down, gently rubbing the kitten’s head with his finger. Despite his natural aversion to dirt, he hesitated only briefly before giving the kitten a bath.
There was a faint smell of cat feces. Although cats clean themselves, a little wash wouldn’t hurt.
The kitten was small enough to fit in his hands, making the task easy. As he cleaned it, his mood lifted significantly.
She didn’t eat it. If she wouldn’t eat a kitten, how could she eat a human?
The weather was hot, and after drying the kitten with a towel, it was almost dry. He looked at the kitten with tenderness, “Aren’t you scared being here alone? Want to come with me? But I need to check with Curly first. If he agrees, I’ll come back for you, okay?”
His voice was gentle, like a melody.
“Is anyone there?” A soft female voice called from outside.
The inquiry made Zhong Qingxiao instantly alert. He didn’t recognize the voice.
He stayed silent, gripping the crowbar tightly.
“I’m really sorry. I saw someone come in. I’m very hungry. Could you spare a little food? Just a little.”
The voice continued, but Zhong Qingxiao remained silent, instinctively slipping the kitten into his pocket.
Then, the door slowly opened, revealing a woman with a fair complexion.
A stranger? Zhong Qingxiao was puzzled.
The woman smiled naturally upon seeing him, not looking much like a monster.
“I’m from Baoliyuan across the way. We came with Su Sheng’an to find his girlfriend, Bai Lan.”
Her logic seemed clear.
“Is that so.” Zhong Qingxiao pressed his lips together, still wary, “I don’t have any food on me. We can discuss this on the 18th floor.”
The woman nodded in agreement, introducing herself, “I’m Haiyue.”
Zhong Qingxiao nodded but didn’t offer his name.
“Could you step out for a moment? I’ll be right there,” he said.
The woman named Haiyue stepped back with a smile.
Zhong Qingxiao placed the kitten back, found the house keys on a shoe cabinet, and locked the door.
“Let’s go.” He needed to confirm on the 18th floor if a new group had indeed arrived.
Just a few steps out, the woman seemed to stumble, almost falling into him. Zhong Qingxiao hesitated but reached out to steady her, though his brow remained furrowed.
Her hand was cold, reminding him of Luo Ke. He wondered if his girlfriend had changed bodies to play a trick on him, but his instincts told him this woman wasn’t Luo Ke.
“Ah, sorry, I have low blood sugar,” the woman said, still unsteady, her hand resting in his, looking uncomfortable.
“…It’s fine,” Zhong Qingxiao replied awkwardly. He felt a strange aversion to touching her but didn’t withdraw his hand out of politeness.
“Not letting go?”
A familiar voice from ahead made Zhong Qingxiao’s heart skip. He reflexively let go of the stranger’s hand, forgetting all courtesy.
Luo Ke approached, her steps deliberate. Zhong Qingxiao almost stepped back, knowing he had done nothing wrong, yet feeling guilty.
She had found him so quickly.
Luo Ke’s gaze was amused, her eyes shifting from Zhong Qingxiao to the seemingly frail woman beside him.
So she really was human. Luo Ke said nothing, but Zhong Qingxiao seemed particularly drawn to women with a fragile aura, just like the tactics she once used.
“Hello, sister. I’m Haiyue, new here,” the woman said, unaware of Luo Ke’s true age, given her youthful appearance and girlish attire.
The two women locked eyes, and Luo Ke suddenly smiled, her lips curling, “He’s mine.”
“Ah?” The woman seemed surprised, smiling as she explained, “You misunderstood, we’re just…
Come closer, and I’ll tear you to pieces.” Luo Ke didn’t listen to her excuses. Her instincts told her this woman was human, but she trusted her intuition more, sensing something odd about her.
She had never witnessed a human mutation firsthand. Was this one in progress?
Luo Ke didn’t care about the monsters’ thoughts, nor did she care about other humans’. She only wanted to know what Zhong Qingxiao was thinking when he reached out to help.
She had heard that human males had a high propensity for infidelity, almost instinctively. Was that true?
Was Zhong Qingxiao no exception? Unable to derive any spiritual value from her, had he turned to other humans?
Every pet was loyal to its owner. Hadn’t he said that himself?
Had he deliberately sent her away today to seek a new partner?
Luo Ke’s gaze was terrifying, and Zhong Qingxiao sensed a misunderstanding. He explained, “Xiao Ke, we don’t know each other.”
We.
Luo Ke’s expression didn’t change. She didn’t dwell on it, instead saying something cryptic, “Time to change the bandage.”
Zhong Qingxiao paused, then understood. He stepped closer, each step heavy with reluctance.
“Band-aids last 6 to 8 hours,” he whispered, his expression pained.
“Not changing it?” Luo Ke was indifferent.
She had bought several boxes. If she considered their effective time, when would she ever use them all?
Zhong Qingxiao hesitated, then said nothing, gripping her wrist as they headed upstairs.
The woman named Haiyue was left behind, her pale face showing a hint of regret.
Such a quality man, and he already had a girlfriend?
What a pity, what a pity… a pity…
Someone had taken the quality man she had her eyes on, the quality… meat.
The woman swallowed hard.
Back on the 18th floor, Zhong Qingxiao noticed a few more people. However, the two men seemed too old to be Bai Lan’s boyfriend.
Seeing him approach, Yan Cheng waved.
Zhong Qingxiao instinctively let go of Luo Ke’s hand and walked over.
Luo Ke stared at her hand for a moment, then looked in the direction Zhong Qingxiao went, where a heavily made-up woman stood.
She followed.
“See those newcomers?” Yan Cheng said, “They’re from Baoliyuan. A young guy is Bai Lan’s boyfriend, now in 1803. Four are left. I’ll be honest, I don’t have a good impression of the wealthy.”
Baoliyuan was a typical wealthy area, with residents far removed from the average person.
Zhong Qingxiao understood his concern and said, “You’re worried about supplies?”
“Exactly,” Yan Cheng replied bluntly, “We can’t share food with them, and they have nothing to eat. Bai Lan might help her boyfriend, but what about the others?”
Zhong Qingxiao was silent for a moment, then said, “I’ll handle it.”
“What?” Yan Cheng was surprised. Though Zhong Qingxiao seemed well-educated and refined, he hadn’t expected him to be so altruistic.
Zhong Qingxiao smiled wryly, “I can provide them with food for two days, but I have a favor to ask…”
Luo Ke also wanted to know why Zhong Qingxiao would seek help from these ordinary humans instead of someone like her, a divine being!?
Just as she was about to approach, Zhong Qingxiao blocked her with his shoulder. He was stopping her, daring to stop her.
“Xiao Ke, could you call Aunt Luo for me?” Zhong Qingxiao asked.
The same trick, sending her away again. Luo Ke smiled, “Sure.”
She stepped back, her gaze icy.
[Don’t you understand, sister?] Huo Sisi’s voice came from behind her.
[He wants to kill you.]
