Love in the Fast Lane - Chapter 44 - Simple and Honest Life is Real Life
So, as soon as Mo Zihan stepped out of the company, she stood at the door for a long time, feeling uneasy. Finally, she decided to call that scumbag Qi Xiaomeng. Although Qi Xiaomeng might not have much experience in this area, at least it would provide some peace of mind.
But Mo Zihan was quite puzzled. After all, she was just there to help. Did she really need to take it so seriously?
Upon further thought, her professional ethics won over. Besides, there was another reason that seemed reasonable: “I’m racking my brains to help him. After I move into his dump, would he feel too embarrassed to ask for the overdue rent? This deal seems quite worth it after all.”
Qi Xiaomeng answered weakly from the other end, but with a tone that indicated she had narrowly escaped disaster: “Mo, Xiaohan, you’re really a savior of the people. If you hadn’t called, your sister here might have met a miserable end.”
It was only then that Mo Zihan remembered Qi Xiaomeng had come out to avoid some trouble last night. Could it be that she really was her savior? Hmm, she felt quite deserving of this honorable and sacred title.
“Cut the crap. I’m here to ask for your advice, hurry up. Your savior still needs to help you out,” Mo Zihan wanted to gloat a bit, but considering she was there to ask for advice, she worried Qi Xiaomeng might get angry if she pushed it too far. She decided to adopt a more ‘subtle’ tone instead.
Qi Xiaomeng almost didn’t keep her composure. Wow, someone can be this subtle when asking for a favor? Really worthy of admiration!
“What’s up? To avoid wasting your precious time, just spit it out. I’m taking a break anyway.”
Mo Zihan chuckled, “Nothing much. Honestly, I was a bit uneasy, but talking to you lifted my spirits way up. Alright, I’ll hang up now. Once things settle down here, I’ll come to rescue you. Remember, don’t be swayed by any charming men. Stick to your principles, got it?”
Qi Xiaomeng couldn’t help but laugh out loud: “Stick to your principles, my foot. Even if there were any charmers, they’d be male, you know? ‘Charming men,’ where do you come up with this stuff? Oh, I get it, you’re nervous about meeting his parents, right?”
At that moment, a robust voice came from the other end, “Meeting the parents? Great! Xiaomeng, look at Xiaohan moving up to meet the parents. When are you going to bring someone home for us to see?”
Mo Zihan broke out in a cold sweat. There was no need to ask; this must be another formidable presence comparable to her own drama mom, none other than Qi Xiaomeng’s drama mom.
Sometimes, Mo Zihan felt that life was incredibly unpredictable. She always thought that she and Qi Xiaomeng together were already quite extraordinary. Who would have guessed that when her drama mom and Qi Xiaomeng’s drama mom met, she’d realize there was an even greater force in the world.
“Hey, Xiaohan, you’re going to meet his parents, right? Let me tell you, when a woman meets her in-laws, it’s just like a man meeting his future father and mother-in-law. They’ll scrutinize you thoroughly. Be careful, just like they show on TV dramas these days,” her drama mom’s booming voice left Mo Zihan feeling utterly helpless. The loud voice continued, “But don’t worry, if his parents give you a hard time, just call me. I’ll come and stand up for you.”
Please, just rest. There could have been no issues, but now you might actually create problems. At that point, am I helping or are they catering to you?
Honestly, having one drama mom is already troublesome enough. Adding a drama aunt into the mix, the world would simply descend into chaos. Thankfully, there are only two such powerful women in this world!
Faced with this drama aunt, Mo Zihan could only retreat, “Okay, okay, Auntie, rest assured. If there’s a problem, I’ll definitely come to you. In such a big city, who else could I rely on? By the way, about Xiaomeng…”
Her drama mom laughed heartily, “Now that’s my girl. Good, then you rush home. Oh, are you two living together now? Be careful. Some things may cost money but avoiding bigger problems is worth it. Women have it tough, we were born to suffer, so make sure you’re careful and don’t get taken advantage of.”
Mo Zihan leaned against a telephone pole and truly felt defeated.
Qi Xiaomeng, thick-skinned as she was, couldn’t take it anymore. She snatched the phone and hung up with a snap. There would probably be a good show on the other end today. However, Mo Zihan surmised that Qi Xiaomeng wouldn’t have a good few days ahead. Her drama mom would, without fail, hunt down decent single men on her daily outings and conduct thorough examinations.
“I mourn for you, Qi,” Mo Zihan offered a mock prayer before standing up. She ducked into a convenience store, bought a small mirror, tidied herself up, then lifted her head, suppressed her thumping heart, and marched toward the residential community.
Whether you duck your head or not, the outcome remains the same. Why not face it bravely? At least she still had her courage!
Climbing from the first floor to the ninth floor, Mo Zihan’s breathing was slightly uneven. She quietly approached the door and listened. Hearing movement inside and seeing several wet footprints at the entrance, she knew Tang Ning’s parents had already arrived.
Taking a deep breath, she took out her key, opened the door, and the scene inside made her momentarily lose her composure.
Who said only his parents were here? On the sofa sat a middle-aged couple, resembling Tang Ning in their features. Opposite them were an elderly man and woman, dressed like former production team leaders. The man tinkering with a screwdriver, hammering on a cabinet, was no doubt Tang Ning’s father-Tang Ning bore a striking resemblance to him.
In the space between the kitchen and the living room, a woman was talking while holding a kitchen knife; she was surely Tang Ning’s mother. Her kindly face, graying hair, and slightly flushed cheeks immediately marked her as a hardworking woman.
Just as Mo Zihan was momentarily lost in thought, Tang Ning emerged from the master bedroom carrying a trash bag. He looked in high spirits, his mood clearly excellent. Seeing her, he quickly dropped the bag and began introducing everyone. Though Mo Zihan was dazed and didn’t fully grasp what was happening, this didn’t stop her from politely greeting each person as Tang Ning introduced them.
The elderly couple were his grandparents, taking this opportunity to travel after a lifetime of hard work. The other middle-aged couple were Tang Ning’s uncle and aunt, both retired government officials who had traveled extensively but were visiting here for the first time.
As expected, the man with the screwdriver, busily finding things to fix, was Tang Ning’s father. The woman bustling about in the kitchen was his mother.
Tang Ning’s father was not very talkative, and he reminded Mo Zihan of her own university professor father-always stern and authoritative. Tang Ning’s mother, on the other hand, made Mo Zihan feel somewhat at a loss.
Kind and amicable, she was the complete opposite of Mo Zihan’s drama mom.
Placing the kitchen knife on the counter, Tang Ning’s mother’s rough but warm hands instantly touched Mo Zihan’s heart.
“Auntie, you’ve taken the night train, let me do the cooking,” Mo Zihan said, seeing Tang Ning’s mother holding her cold hand. She took off her small bag and hung it by the door, then grabbed an apron to tie around her waist.
She wasn’t expecting this action and statement to immediately win Tang Ning’s mother’s approval. In a thick local accent, she laughed and said, “You’ve been working hard all morning, why go through this trouble? You should rest; I can’t sit still anyway.”
Recalling Qi Xiaomeng’s advice about housework being a critical test for a new daughter-in-law, and not wanting Tang Ning’s mother to be overburdened, Mo Zihan insisted and joined her in the kitchen.
Reflecting on this first meeting later, Mo Zihan always felt it was a simple encounter. But she knew that life is simple, and it is these plain, uneventful days that constitute real living.
Simplicity brings the greatest sense of peace, doesn’t it?
