I Really Have X-ray Superpower - Chapter 2 - Winning the Lottery
The beautiful nurse heard Ye Tian’s voice and stared at him in slight surprise. “So you’re not stupid after all?”
Ye Tian was taken aback. What kind of question was that? “No, I’ve never been stupid! Does getting hit on the head make you stupid?” he retorted.
The beautiful nurse chuckled. “Okay, okay. But we still need to check you out. I’ll take you for an X-ray, just in case there’s any lasting damage.”
“How much will that cost?” Ye Tian asked.
The beautiful nurse smiled. “Not much, two or three hundred yuan.”
“What?! That’s not much? I’m a student! Where am I going to get that kind of money? No way.”
His monthly allowance was only 500 yuan, saved painstakingly by his grandmother, supplemented by his part-time jobs. Two or three hundred yuan for an X-ray would wipe out his entire month’s budget.
“Are you sure? That pretty girl covered all your medical expenses.”
Ye Tian’s face lit up. “Yes! Let’s do it. Give me a full checkup…”
…
Leaving the hospital, Ye Tian walked down the street, a happy smile on his face. He’d gotten better without spending a dime-that was pretty good.
But when he pulled a crumpled fifty-yuan bill from his pocket, the smile vanished.
“Damn it,” he muttered, “all I have left after the college entrance examination is this…I haven’t even bought cigarettes…Looks like I’ll have to get another part-time job.” His stomach rumbled loudly.
“Forget it, time for food!”
Ye Tian shook his head and walked toward a nearby small restaurant.
Entering the restaurant, he touched his still-aching head and gritted his teeth. “Boss, one egg fried rice, with two extra eggs, and a beer.”
“Coming right up!”
After eating, he tallied the bill: twenty yuan. It pinched his wallet.
Leaving the restaurant, it was almost dark. Ye Tian was heading home to have dinner with his grandmother.
Walking down the street, Ye Tian was pondering how to make money. As he walked past his apartment building, he noticed a lottery shop next door with a banner proclaiming: “Congratulations to the lottery player who won a 5 million yuan prize!”
“Man, if only I could win 5 million…” Ye Tian sighed dejectedly.
Just as he was about to leave, a mystic light suddenly flashed through his mind.
Lottery? Scratch cards? And… my eyes…
Ye Tian’s eyes lit up sharply as the thought came to him: “Damn! I’m about to strike it rich!”
He stepped into the lottery shop, where a few middle-aged men were busily scratching their cards, beads of sweat dripping from their foreheads.
Suddenly, one of the men stood up, tossed the scratch cards he had been holding onto the floor, and cursed loudly, “Damn it! Another dud! Boss, don’t tell me your tickets are rigged. I’ve scratched so many and only won ten yuan!”
“It’s not rigged; you’re just unlucky. Look, this guy here just scratched a card and won a hundred yuan,” the lottery shop owner said, holding up a winning card while gesturing towards a young man grinning from ear to ear.
“Damn it, give me a few more cards! I don’t believe this!” The middle-aged man wiped the sweat from his brow in anger, clearly frustrated and determined to keep going.
Ye Tian shook his head in disapproval. People like these had almost no chance of scratching a major prize from those cards.
Touching the thirty yuan in his pocket, he spoke up, “Boss, give me a few scratch cards.”
“Which kind?” The boss’s eyes lit up at the prospect of another customer and replied cheerfully.
“Give me the ones that cost ten yuan each-three of them. I’ll pick them myself.”
“Got it.”
The boss pulled out a thick stack of scratch cards from under the counter, all priced at ten yuan per card, with the smallest prize being ten yuan.
Carefully selecting three cards from the pile, Ye Tian’s lips curled into a subtle smile. Yet, he deliberately exaggerated his process, acting as if he was picking cards that would win him the jackpot.
The others watched Ye Tian’s meticulous selection and couldn’t help but sneer.
“Kid, if you actually pick a winning ticket out of those scratch cards, well, I’ll be impressed,” one of the men mocked with a tone filled with sarcasm.
Ye Tian chuckled cheekily, “Uncle, you can’t say that. What if I luck out and hit the jackpot? Wouldn’t that be sweet?”
The people around shook their heads and scoffed, clearly not buying into his optimism.
“These three will do.”
Ye Tian tossed the money onto the counter and pulled off three scratch cards.
The boss gleefully pocketed the cash while Ye Tian, unfazed, started scratching the cards right in front of everyone.
The crowd leaned forward, eyes fixed on Ye Tian, curious to see if he could actually scratch a prize.
The first card revealed nothing-a dud.
“Hahaha! Told you so,” the crowd erupted in laughter.
Ignoring their sarcasm, Ye Tian moved on to the second card.
The second card was also blank, just as Ye Tian had planned. After all, he couldn’t have all three cards win a prize right away; if they did, the boss might throw him out of the shop.
“Damn! So unlucky, only one card left,” Ye Tian cursed under his breath.
Hearing his frustration, the people around him laughed even louder.
“Kid, don’t bother scratching it. The last one’s definitely going to be a dud too,” someone scoffed.
“Exactly. This stuff isn’t for you. Better go back to studying.”
“Why the rush? There’s still one card left. What if it’s a winner?” Ye Tian shot back, unable to resist teasing them.
He said that deliberately, playing it up as he placed his hand on the third scratch card.
“Wait… Is this… a winning ticket? Ten thousand?!”
Ye Tian pretended to be in disbelief as he stared at the last card. In reality, he had already seen through the whole pile earlier and knew that there was only one big prize among the batch. Saving it for last was all part of his plan to avoid any suspicion.
“No way!”
“That’s gotta be fake!”
The surrounding lottery players swarmed around him, staring intensely at the prize amount on Ye Tian’s scratch card. One by one, their eyes widened in shock.
“It’s real! It’s really ten thousand!”
“This kid hit the jackpot?!”
The lottery shop owner stood frozen for a moment, still processing what just happened. It wasn’t until Ye Tian handed the ticket over that the boss finally snapped out of his daze.
“Boss, I’m here to claim my prize,” Ye Tian said, his face flushed with excitement. Truth be told, it was his first time ever holding this much money.
The owner, still a bit stunned, took the winning ticket from Ye Tian. After confirming the prize amount, he gave Ye Tian a thumbs-up. “Impressive! Young man, you really have incredible luck.”
Then, the owner pulled out a bundle of cash-ten thousand yuan in crisp bills-from the drawer and handed it over.
Ye Tian took the money, held it in his hands, and gave it a pat. He couldn’t hide his exhilaration. “Haha! Time to go,” he said with a broad grin.
With that, he turned and walked out of the lottery shop, leaving behind a crowd of players filled with envy, jealousy, and astonishment.
