- Chapter 9 - Grandma Su's Affection
Old Master Su didn’t express any particular opinion about Jiang Xianyu giving up a high-paying, respectable job to become a housemaid.
In his younger years, he might have thought the young girl lacked ambition, but now, he had come to see things differently.
A capable person can excel in any field, no matter where they are.
If it were an average person, they likely wouldn’t have even passed the interview to become their housemaid.
Jiang Xianyu chatted casually with the elderly couple for a while before getting back to her tasks.
Lunch today featured sweet and sour ribs, tomato-braised beef brisket, stir-fried celery with dried tofu, and a side of tomato egg soup.
The four generations at the table-young and old alike-enjoyed the meal thoroughly.
Jiang Xianyu noticed that Grandma Su had a habit of using vegetable scraps for composting. So, she thoughtfully gathered the leftover vegetable leaves while preparing the meal.
Grandma Su noticed this and her smile grew even warmer.
She thought to herself, “This young girl has sharp eyes.”
When Jiang Xianyu picked up the bag of scraps to take them to the compost bin, Grandma Su followed her.
“Xiao Jiang, give that to me. You might not know how to handle it,” she said.
Jiang Xianyu didn’t let Grandma Su carry the bag of kitchen waste. She smiled and replied, “Grandma Su, I’m quite familiar with composting. I know how to do it.”
Grandma Su was surprised, then broke into laughter.
“I’ve really struck gold with you. Is there anything you don’t know?”
Jiang Xianyu’s tone was calm and unhurried, soothing to listen to.
“I enjoy tinkering with flowers and plants. I’ve studied these things thoroughly.”
Grandma Su sighed, “With someone like you, I won’t want to let you go after two months.”
Jiang Xianyu’s eyes curved into a smile. “You have my number. If you ever feel like chatting, you can always call me.”
She didn’t say anything like, “Well, then I won’t leave.”
After all, the previous housemaid had worked here for many years. Even if Grandma Su liked her now, it wouldn’t be realistic to replace the long-time housemaid with her.
Grandma Su brightened at her words. “You said it yourself. Don’t complain later that this old lady is bothering you too much.”
“Why would I? I get lonely myself sometimes. People say having an elder at home is like having a treasure. Chatting with you enriches my experiences-it’s the kind of thing money can’t buy.”
Grandma Su’s gaze softened even more. As they walked, she talked to Jiang Xianyu about her vegetable seedlings and flowers.
She and Old Master Su had only one son.
They had high hopes for him from a young age and were strict in their upbringing. While he grew up to be accomplished and independent, it also made him somewhat distant.
When he first got married, things were better. But after he and his wife divorced, it became common for him to go months without visiting them.
It left the elderly couple feeling like they were living the lives of “left-behind seniors.”
Thankfully, their eldest grandson still made time to visit during holidays and special occasions. However, the grandson had his own company to manage and was also responsible for part of Yunyou Group’s operations. His busy schedule rivaled, if not exceeded, that of his father.
This was one of the reasons Grandma Su enjoyed chatting with Jiang Xianyu.
Having a young girl around brought a sense of vitality to their home.
Ah, if only her grandson could bring home a granddaughter-in-law someday.
Adding new members to the family is always a joyful occasion.
But her grandson wasn’t the type to listen to advice. His stubborn streak was just as bad as his father’s.
As if her thoughts had summoned him, Grandma Su’s phone rang-it was her grandson calling.
Jiang Xianyu noticed and said, “Grandma Su, you go ahead and take care of your business. Leave the composting to me.”
Grandma Su nodded and slowly walked back with her phone in hand. Jiang Xianyu could still hear the barely concealed joy in her voice.
Su Linyuan, upon hearing from his assistant Zhao Tianming that the housemaid for his grandmother had been hired, decided to call and check on the situation.
As soon as Grandma Su started talking about Jiang Xianyu, her words poured out like a flood.
“Xiao Yuan, let me tell you, the housemaid I found this time is amazing. She’s a graduate from a prestigious university, has multiple certifications, is gentle, beautiful, and cooks delicious meals.”
Su Linyuan rubbed his temples, trying to relax. Listening to his grandmother’s endless chatter, he surprisingly didn’t find it annoying.
“As long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters. Are you sure you don’t want me to hire a chef for you?”
“No, no, no! If you get me a chef, I’ll be mad at you,” Grandma Su’s voice rose a notch. “Those fancy chefs only care about presentation. Big plates, tiny portions, a drizzle of sauce here and there, and then they stick a sprig of something random on the side. Three dishes later, you’re still hungry. I don’t know what you all see in that.”
Hearing his grandmother’s tirade, Su Linyuan, who was always composed and serious in public, couldn’t keep a straight face. His shoulders shook slightly as he stifled a laugh.
“Alright, I get it. You have the best taste, Grandma.”
Grandma Su, appeased by her grandson’s words, asked, “When will you have time to come home for a meal?”
Glancing at his packed schedule, Su Linyuan replied apologetically, “Grandma, I’ve been really busy lately. I have to leave for a business trip tomorrow. But as soon as I have some free time, I’ll definitely come back and have dinner with you.”
Grandma Su, imagining her grandson’s hectic life, didn’t seem disappointed. “Alright, you focus on your work. Don’t worry about me. We have Xiao Jiang here. That young girl is great company, so we won’t feel lonely.”
Su Linyuan acknowledged her with a hum and exchanged a few more words of concern before hanging up.
He thought to himself, this Xiao Jiang seems to have really won Grandma’s favor. When her job here is done, I’ll make sure to give her a generous bonus as a token of appreciation for keeping the old couple company.
Though she felt a bit down about not seeing her grandson, Grandma Su quickly adjusted her mood. Cheerfully, she headed to the vegetable garden to tend to the plants with Jiang Xianyu.
Elderly people tend to follow a routine of early to bed and early to rise.
Jiang Xianyu also began adjusting her own schedule. After all, health is the foundation of everything. Reflecting on her previous life’s sudden demise, she felt that exercising alongside Grandma Su and Grandpa Su was absolutely necessary.
Nowadays, seniors are all about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially those with wealth.
In this upscale neighborhood, the elderly have a habit of going for a round of square dancing an hour after dinner.
Breakfast was at seven, and by eight, the dancing would begin.
One morning, after finishing breakfast, Jiang Xianyu followed Grandma Su and asked, “Grandma Su, can I join you for square dancing?”
Grandma Su was delighted. “Of course! Do you like square dancing?”
Jiang Xianyu, a bit shy, admitted, “I’ve never tried it before. I used to work around the clock, and my body was on the verge of breaking down. Now that I’m still young, I want to take the opportunity to exercise properly. Good health is more important than anything else.”
Grandma Su nodded repeatedly. “You’re absolutely right. If you wait until you’re our age to start caring about your health, it’ll be too late.”
Grandma Su took Jiang Xianyu’s interest in joining her for square dancing very seriously. She instructed Butler Lu to prepare some suitable workout clothes for Jiang Xianyu. While it was too late to get them for today, they could be delivered in time for tomorrow’s session.
Butler Lu couldn’t help but chuckle at Grandma Su’s urgency.
This wasn’t just about preparing clothes; it was practically a way of tying Xiao Jiang down. With these new outfits, Xiao Jiang wouldn’t feel right about only joining for a day or two-she’d have to accompany Grandma Su for a longer stretch.
Unaware of Grandma Su’s intentions, Jiang Xianyu quickly waved her hands in refusal upon seeing the fuss. “Grandma Su, there’s no need to go through all this trouble. I already have workout clothes.”
“It’s no trouble at all. This is just a little token of appreciation from Grandma Su-consider it part of your employee benefits.”
Jiang Xianyu had no response to that. After all, no worker could turn down a perk.
