After packing her things, Jiang Xianyu decided to write a voluntary application for adoption, signed it, and handed it to Jiang Hongbo.
“Dad, this is my voluntary adoption application. See if it can be processed without me being there, or just call me when it’s time.”
Jiang Hongbo took the application, carefully put it away, and reassured her, “Don’t worry, Dad will take care of this. As soon as the civil affairs department is open, I’ll go inquire.”
They were concerned about potential complications.
With that settled, Jiang Xianyu sent a message to Chen Siling.
Chen Siling soon drove over.
Jiang Hongbo and Xia Chan helped Jiang Xianyu with her luggage to the car.
Chen Siling wasn’t surprised to see her sister coming from Uncle’s house, guessing she might have been troubled by their parents.
She greeted Jiang Hongbo and Xia Chan politely.
The couple felt a sense of relief seeing their niece, who had grown into a graceful young girl with a good life.
Xia Chan handed a bag to Chen Siling, “This is a little something from your Uncle and me, homemade salted meat and sausages, so you can taste some home flavors.”
Chen Siling accepted without hesitation, sweetly thanking Uncle and aunt.
Jiang Hongbo handed a bag of snacks to Jiang Xianyu, “Xiao Yu, take these snacks for the road. If you hit traffic, they’ll tide you over.”
Jiang Xianyu accepted with a smile, “Thanks, Dad, you’re always so thoughtful.”
Chen Siling was startled by the address, wondering how Uncle became Dad. What had she missed?
Jiang Xianyu smiled at her, “It’s getting late. I’ll explain once we’re in the car.”
Jiang Hongbo chuckled, “Yes, let Xiao Yu tell you. It’s good news.”
Chen Siling felt relieved, and after saying their goodbyes, she drove off.
Only when the car was out of sight did Jiang Hongbo and Xia Chan head back, feeling invigorated and determined to work harder for their daughter.
In the car, Jiang Xianyu recounted the events of the New Year to Chen Siling.
Chen Siling gasped repeatedly.
She felt a mix of hatred and relief about Father Jiang and Mother Jiang’s plan to sell Jiang Xianyu for a dowry.
Thankfully, her sister had truly woken up this time.
She had feared her sister might foolishly comply with their wishes.
“Now it’s settled. You’re part of Uncle’s family, and they can’t bleed you dry anymore.”
Jiang Xianyu smiled, “Yes, I’m no longer connected to them.”
Chen Siling glanced at Jiang Xianyu, hesitantly asking, “Sis, are you planning to get back the money you sent them over the years?”
Jiang Xianyu shook her head, “No.”
Chen Siling wasn’t surprised by this answer, knowing the money was as good as gone, “That’s probably for the best, consider it paying to avoid disaster.”
Jiang Xianyu said, “Actually, that’s likely why they agreed to the adoption. If I demanded the money back, they wouldn’t have agreed.”
“Let’s just say this is my way of repaying them for bringing me into this world. Besides, if the adoption doesn’t go through, I’ll still have to support them financially. Even if it’s not much each month, over time it adds up, and I’d feel burdened by it.”
“It’s better to cut ties cleanly now.”
Chen Siling nodded in agreement with Jiang Xianyu’s words.
If it affected their core interests, there was no way they’d let her sister join another family. This was already a good outcome.
On the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, the highway wasn’t too crowded. Occasionally, there were some traffic jams due to roadwork, but overall, it was smooth.
Jiang Xianyu took over the driving for the latter half of the journey. They had set off at eight in the morning and reached Hai City by two in the afternoon.
Jiang Xianyu took Chen Siling out for lunch before Chen Siling headed to the Film and Television City.
After being away for a few days, Jiang Xianyu returned to Jinxiu Garden and began restoring the utilities and cleaning up. The place wasn’t large, so she finished tidying up in just over an hour.
Noticing it was getting late, she went to a nearby market to buy some vegetables. Jiang Hongbo had given her plenty of sausages and cured meats, which paired well with some stir-fried veggies.
That evening, Jiang Xianyu went to bed early to recharge.
The next day, after getting ready and having breakfast, she rode her E-ride to Banshan Villa.
Tomorrow, she would officially start her new job, so she came early to get things in order.
Meanwhile, at Peach Blossom Source.
Su Linyuan heard the alert from his phone’s surveillance app, indicating someone had entered the villa.
He assumed it was just the property manager sending someone for routine cleaning and casually checked his phone.
An all-too-familiar E-ride appeared on the screen.
Jiang Xianyu was back!
He jumped up from the sofa in excitement.
Grandma Su, sitting nearby, looked at him in confusion. “What’s going on? You’re a grown man, why are you so jumpy?”
Su Linyuan rubbed his knee, which he had accidentally bumped against the coffee table. “It’s nothing. I just remembered that no one’s been feeding the cats at home these past few days. I need to go back and feed them.”
Grandpa Su turned around, intrigued. “Cats? You have cats now?”
“Stray cats that often hang around my place are practically mine,” Su Linyuan explained, showing him the cat house on the surveillance footage.
Grandpa Su looked puzzled. “Why so serious? I was just asking.”
Su Linyuan: …
Did he just make himself look foolish with that hasty explanation?
“Never mind, I need to pack my things,” he said, heading upstairs.
Grandpa Su called after him, “Wait, don’t those cats like fish? I can catch some for you to take back.”
Su Linyuan sighed, wondering if he should even entertain such an idea.
“No need, Grandpa,” he politely declined.
Thinking of Jiang Xianyu being back, he couldn’t help but smile. “Besides, there’s already fish at home.”
Though, he meant a different kind of ‘fish.’
Grandma Su playfully smacked Grandpa Su’s arm. “You old coot, if you want to go fishing, just go. Why use your grandson as an excuse? With your fishing skills, you might not even catch anything before dark.”
She waved Su Linyuan off. “Go on, since you have cats, you need to be responsible. Honestly, how long have you been back? Don’t let the poor cats starve.”
Su Linyuan acknowledged her advice, taking long strides up the stairs, three at a time.
In his room, he quickly packed his belongings into a suitcase and soon emerged, ready to leave.
“Grandpa, Grandma, I’m off!”
Watching their grandson disappear through the door, Grandma Su chuckled. “He’s thirty, yet still so impatient. Anyone would think he’s rushing to meet a sweetheart, not just to feed cats.”
Grandpa Su scoffed, “Him? I think he’s all brains and no heart.”
It wasn’t that he underestimated his grandson, but this grandson had a cleanliness obsession and often wore a cold expression. He found the attention from young girls bothersome, which clearly indicated he hadn’t yet opened his heart.
At that moment, Su Lixin walked in, catching his father’s remarks. He raised an eyebrow. “Whether he opens his heart or not doesn’t matter. I don’t care if he marries, as long as he gives me a grandchild.”
Otherwise, all this family wealth would go to waste.
Having experienced marriage himself, he found it rather mundane and preferred the challenges of the business world.
Grandpa Su and Grandma Su exchanged glances. They had married for love and enjoyed a blissful marriage, so they couldn’t understand why their son was so unconventional.
This genetic anomaly seemed a bit too far-fetched.
They wondered if their grandson had inherited his father’s peculiar traits.
