- Chapter 60 - Is This Man Her Blind Date?
After the New Year’s Eve dinner, Su Linyuan hurried upstairs. The first thing he did upon sitting on his bed was to send Jiang Xianyu a New Year’s greeting.
“Happy New Year, Jiang Xianyu.”
Over on the other side, Jiang Xianyu had just seen the message from Su Linyuan and was about to reply when she noticed he had retracted it. A few seconds later, he sent a new message. Unlike before, this time it was a voice message.
Jiang Xianyu opened the voice message and brought her phone to her ear. Su Linyuan’s deep yet gentle voice came through, “Happy New Year, Jiang Xianyu.”
Jiang Xianyu’s heart felt like it was being tickled by a swarm of tiny ants, leaving a tingling sensation. She initially thought of typing a reply, but upon hearing his voice message, she decided to send a voice message back.
“Happy New Year, Su Linyuan.”
Su Linyuan hadn’t left the WeChat interface. Upon seeing Jiang Xianyu’s voice message, he quickly adjusted his posture and glanced around to ensure everything was fine before cautiously playing the message.
“Happy New Year, Su Linyuan.”
Jiang Xianyu’s voice was like a gentle breeze, fanning the small flame in his heart, igniting a brilliant spark in his chest. The three-second voice message played quickly. He pursed his lips and played it again, over and over.
Jiang Xianyu’s voice kept repeating in his ears throughout the night.
On New Year’s Day, Jiang Xianyu woke up early to wish Jiang Hongbo and Xia Chan a happy New Year. They both smiled and handed her a hefty red envelope.
Looking at the substantial envelope, Jiang Xianyu said, “Isn’t this a bit too much?”
Jiang Hongbo replied, “It’s not too much; I’m just worried it might not be enough.”
Xia Chan held Jiang Xianyu’s hand and said, “Xiao Yu, now that your job outside is gone, what are your plans? If you’re not planning to find work outside, come back home. We have some savings; you can use them to buy a storefront in town and open a small shop to support yourself.”
Moved by their sincere eyes, Jiang Xianyu said, “Don’t worry, Mom and Dad. I’m doing well as a housemaid. The salary for housemaids in big cities is quite high, not worse than what I earned at the investment bank.”
Xia Chan was skeptical, “How high can a housemaid’s salary be? And you have to deal with people’s moods. If you meet someone easygoing, it’s fine, but if not, it can be really tough.”
Jiang Hongbo nodded in agreement, knowing that being a housemaid wasn’t easy. Thinking about their girl having to do various chores every day, they truly felt for her.
Seeing their genuine concern, Jiang Xianyu explained her work duties briefly, which weren’t much. She compared her workload at the investment bank with her current job, and they finally understood.
Investment banking was too demanding; being a housemaid was just fine.
Jiang Hongbo said, “Do what you want, we’ll support you. If you ever get tired, come home. We have savings and aren’t at retirement age yet; we’ll always be able to support you.”
With teary eyes, Jiang Xianyu nodded, “Thank you, Dad. Thank you, Mom.”
She knew she wouldn’t really struggle financially, but she was deeply touched by their loving concern.
After breakfast, Jiang Hongbo took Jiang Xianyu to visit several uncles in the family to wish them a happy new year and to discuss the matter of Jiang Xianyu’s adoption.
Everyone in the Jiang Family knew the situation, and the uncles were happy for Jiang Hongbo.
Thus, the matter of Jiang Xianyu’s adoption was officially acknowledged.
On the second day of the new year, Jiang Wenlan, the younger aunt of the Jiang Family, returned to her parents’ home with her husband and son.
Jiang Wenlan didn’t stay long at the grandparents’ house. After dropping off some things, she came over to Jiang Hongbo’s place.
Every year on this day, their family would have a meal at Jiang Hongbo’s.
Jiang Wenlan was delighted to see Jiang Xianyu and gave her a big red envelope, speaking with a tone of relief, “Our Xiao Yu can finally live a stable life.”
Women born into the Jiang Family often had tough lives, so seeing Jiang Xianyu escape the hardships made her genuinely happy.
Her cousin, Wang Xu, was two years younger than Jiang Xianyu and currently working as a village official while preparing for a civil service exam.
While the adults chatted, Jiang Xianyu naturally ended up talking with Wang Xu.
The two were quite familiar with each other, given their close age and frequent family gatherings.
“Sis, let’s play a game,” Wang Xu suggested enthusiastically.
Jiang Xianyu laughed, “I haven’t played in ages.”
“No worries, I’ll guide you,” Wang Xu said confidently, patting his chest.
Jiang Xianyu, unable to resist her cousin’s persistence, joined him in the game.
Unexpectedly, she ended up winning.
Jiang Xianyu was unusually excited.
Perhaps this really was her lucky year, as she won five rounds in a row.
She eagerly took a photo with Wang Xu, posted it on her social media, and proudly shared her victories.
Everything was going smoothly on her end, while Su Linyuan was staring at his phone, lost in thought over Jiang Xianyu’s social media post.
He zoomed in on Wang Xu’s photo, trying to find any resemblance to Jiang Xianyu to confirm if he was her relative.
But there was none.
So who was this man? A potential match?
It wasn’t unreasonable for him to speculate, considering many around him were being set up for blind dates during the new year.
He zoomed in on Jiang Xianyu’s photo, observing her smiling face.
She seemed genuinely happy.
Completely relaxed.
So was the man in her social media post a potential match? If so, did it work out?
Thinking about Jiang Xianyu’s ex-boyfriend Wang Wei, he doubted her taste in men, and this guy in the photo seemed much more handsome than Wang Wei.
What if she fell for him?
Su Lixin noticed his son staring at his phone and asked, “Linyuan, is there something wrong at work? You seem to be glued to your phone.”
Su Linyuan coughed lightly and put his phone away, “Really? I’m just browsing social media.”
Su Lixin stiffened at the mention of social media.
The words triggered painful memories.
During his time at home, he was almost nagged to death by the old man.
He was so busy, where would he find time to check his father’s social media?
But his father wouldn’t listen to his explanations and even used his son as an example, saying, “Xiao Yuan is busy too, yet he finds time.”
That one remark left him speechless.
Now, he didn’t want to hear the words “social media” at all. Hearing his son’s words, he turned and went upstairs.
Su Linyuan was puzzled, but seeing his father leave, he continued analyzing the photo.
The festive days flew by, and soon it was the fourth day of the new year.
Early that morning, Chen Siling called.
“Sis, my agent is urging me to get back to work. Do you want to come with me? I can drop you off in Hai City.”
Jiang Xianyu thought she had to leave by tomorrow at the latest since she was starting work on the sixth. Leaving today was fine too.
“I’ll go with you. If not today, I’d have to leave tomorrow anyway.”
Chen Siling was thrilled; driving alone on the highway was boring. “Great, let me know when you’re ready. I’m waiting in front of Uncle’s house.”
After setting a time with her sister, Jiang Xianyu quickly said goodbye to Jiang Hongbo and the others.
Jiang Hongbo and Xia Chan, having just gained a daughter, were reluctant to see her go but understood she needed to leave.
They packed a bunch of food for Jiang Xianyu and reminded her, “Be safe on the road, spend money when you need to, don’t skimp on yourself.
Also, check when you have time to come back and transfer your household registration. If you can’t make it, we’ll see if we can handle it without you being there.”
Jiang Xianyu listened and agreed to everything.
