From Dropout to Housemaid-The Upper Crust's Favorite - Chapter 57 - The Meeting
The living room of Jiang Hongtao’s house.
After Jiang Xianyu left with Jiang Hongbo, the three remaining fell into silence.
Mother Jiang hesitantly asked, “Do you think our eldest daughter seems different this time?”
Jiang Xinbao, feeling a bit resentful, was tidying up the things that had been thrown out. “Of course she’s different. She lost her job and is now working as a temporary housemaid. She’s bound to be full of resentment.”
Recalling the days when Jiang Xianyu worked tirelessly for him, Jiang Xinbao felt a twinge of blame towards his parents.
“We shouldn’t have caused a scene at her company. Look at her now, jobless, and we’re not getting any money. We’ve pushed her too far.”
Father Jiang and Mother Jiang exchanged a glance. They had all agreed to cause that scene back then, but now they couldn’t bring themselves to blame their son.
Father Jiang, smoking with a heavy expression, said, “I think we can’t wait until after the New Year to arrange the meeting. The eldest daughter is becoming hard to control.”
Mother Jiang nodded in agreement, “We should settle it soon. I’ll call them later and arrange for a meeting tomorrow.”
Ever since they learned about Jiang Xianyu’s resignation, they had been contemplating how to make her continue earning money for the family.
But now that Jiang Xianyu was out of a job, and with some sort of agreement preventing her from joining another investment bank, she was only working as a temporary housemaid to pay rent.
The rent in Hai City was exorbitant. How much could a housemaid’s salary cover? After paying rent, there wouldn’t be much left.
Jiang Xianyu was already twenty-five, turning twenty-six after the New Year. It was time for her to get married, and they could earn a bride price from her.
Adding that to their existing savings of 320,000 yuan, they could buy a house for their son once he graduated from college.
With a house, it would be easier to find a wife for him.
After some consideration, they approached a matchmaker and explained their situation. The matchmaker indeed had a suitable candidate.
The candidate was from the Chen Family in town, who ran a small plush toy factory. If they found Jiang Xianyu agreeable, the bride price could be at least 380,000 yuan.
Father Jiang and Mother Jiang agreed without even inquiring about the candidate’s character.
They were determined to get that 380,000 yuan or more.
They were confident in Jiang Xianyu’s looks, known for her beauty in the surrounding areas.
She appeared to be the type of a good wife and mother, with a high education.
The matchmaker, feeling a bit uneasy, briefly described the candidate’s situation.
The man’s family was financially stable, but he wasn’t very good-looking, not tall, and his family’s education level was generally low.
They wanted to find a good match for their son, and money wasn’t an issue; they mainly wanted to improve their family’s genes.
The Chen Family was surprised to receive Mother Jiang’s call, as it wasn’t yet time for the meeting.
Mother Jiang explained that their daughter would be busy after the New Year, and having the meeting earlier would settle their minds.
The Chen Family, eager themselves, agreed after hearing this.
Early the next morning, Father Jiang and Mother Jiang tidied up the house once more before heading to Uncle Jiang’s place to fetch someone.
Uncle Jiang’s family was having breakfast.
Upon seeing Father Jiang arrive, Aunt scoffed and ignored him.
Uncle Jiang had no choice but to greet him, “What brings you here so early?”
Father Jiang chuckled, “It’s nothing much. Xiao Yu staying here isn’t ideal. We’ve prepared her room last night, and I’m here to bring her back home.”
The couple’s eyes turned to Jiang Xianyu.
They were hoping she’d stay with them, but ultimately, it was up to Jiang Xianyu herself.
Jiang Xianyu reassured them with a glance, thinking about the adoption matter, she still needed to go over.
“Alright, I’ll come over after breakfast. There’s something I need to discuss with you.”
Father Jiang, having heard what he wanted, didn’t linger and returned home.
Aunt was a bit worried, “I wonder what your dad is up to. We’ll go over and check it out later.”
Jiang Xianyu nodded, “Sure, we need to talk about the adoption anyway.”
Jiang Xianyu wasn’t concerned about the outcome. She had handled many difficult clients; as long as she didn’t see herself as their daughter, she could make them agree.
After breakfast, Jiang Xianyu didn’t bring her suitcase, just changed her shoes and went with Uncle and Aunt to Jiang Hongtao’s house.
When they arrived, the Jiang Family’s door was wide open.
At a glance, the courtyard was neatly cleaned.
Without wasting time, Jiang Xianyu headed straight to her old room on the first floor.
Inside, Jiang Xinbao’s gaming equipment was gone, replaced by a small bed against the wall and a simple wardrobe nearby.
Mother Jiang followed her in, “I’m not saying you should, but your temper has really grown. Your brother is young, and we naturally care for him more. As his sister, it’s nothing to let him have some things. But look at your behavior last night…”
Jiang Xianyu turned to look at Mother Jiang.
Mother Jiang paused, then changed her tone, “Your brother is quite sensible, moving his things out overnight.”
Jiang Xianyu knew they were up to something. These softer words were only spoken when they wanted something from her.
Now that her good job was gone in their eyes, aside from squeezing her for money, what else could they want?
She never hesitated to assume the worst of her biological parents.
If they couldn’t get her salary, then they were after her as a person.
Marriage? Organ donation? Or something else?
Considering the clean courtyard and being called back, the possibility of matchmaking seemed more likely.
Sure enough, soon there was the sound of a car outside the house.
Uncle and Aunt quickly went to the door to check.
Soon, Aunt hurried back to inform Jiang Xianyu, her face looking grim, “Xiao Yu, I saw Matchmaker Cui. Your parents might be setting you up for a match.”
Jiang Xianyu remained calm, “I had a feeling.”
Soon, the people outside finished their greetings and came inside.
Jiang Xianyu’s gaze fell on the four people.
She recognized Matchmaker Cui, and the remaining three must be the family here for the match.
She glanced at the man who came for the match.
She stood at 1.6 meters, and the man was just slightly taller, looking thin and somewhat sharp-featured.
She sneered inwardly, thinking her unscrupulous parents might sell her to an older bachelor or someone disabled, but it turned out to be someone whole.
Chen Xu’s eyes lit up upon seeing Jiang Xianyu. Though she wasn’t very tall, she was indeed beautiful.
The slight upward curve of her lips suggested a good temperament, and her figure was well-proportioned, likely a good match for bearing children.
According to the matchmaker, she graduated from a prestigious university in Hai City, excelling academically from a young age.
He nodded to his parents, and Mr. and Mrs. Chen wore satisfied smiles.
It seemed the matchmaker hadn’t lied; the young girl was indeed a good match.
Jiang Xianyu turned to Father Jiang and Mother Jiang, “Who are they?”
Mother Jiang replied, “Child, hurry and greet them. This is your Uncle Chen and Aunt Chen, and their son Chen Xu.”
Jiang Xianyu didn’t want to waste energy on these matters. She directly asked Mr. and Mrs. Chen, “Are you here for a match?”
Mr. and Mrs. Chen were a bit taken aback by Jiang Xianyu’s straightforwardness.
“Yes, we’re here for a match,” Mrs. Chen replied.
Jiang Xianyu smiled slightly, “Then you might have come for nothing. I wasn’t informed about this; my parents arranged it behind my back.”
Chen Xu hurriedly said, “That doesn’t matter, now you know.”
