- Chapter 51 - Mr. Su, I'll Give You the Money
After tidying up, Jiang Xianyu returned to her work. Su Linyuan watched her busy in the kitchen, standing at the doorway and chatting with her.
“Jiang Xianyu, where’s your hometown?”
Although Jiang Xianyu had been working here for some time, he still didn’t know much about her.
While chopping vegetables, Jiang Xianyu replied, “My hometown is Zhenzhou.”
“Zhenzhou?” Su Linyuan hadn’t heard of it.
“It’s a county-level city under Yang City.”
“Yang City? In Su Province?”
Jiang Xianyu nodded.
Su Linyuan chuckled, “No wonder they say Su Province is fragmented.”
Although his grandparents were originally from Su Province, they moved to Hai City when they were young, so he wasn’t very familiar with that area. Hearing Jiang Xianyu talk about it intrigued him.
Jiang Xianyu paused, “That’s just how we say it over there.”
Su Linyuan asked, “Have you bought your ticket?”
Jiang Xianyu replied, “No, I’ll drive back with my sister.”
She didn’t own a car, but her sister did. She was planning to buy a car worth tens of thousands once she made some money from stock trading, which would be convenient.
“You have a sister?” Su Linyuan was a bit surprised.
Jiang Xianyu lowered her gaze, “Yes, I do.”
Seeing she wasn’t inclined to elaborate, Su Linyuan didn’t press further.
After lunch, Jiang Xianyu, worried about her sister’s situation, called her.
She had promised to visit once her tasks were done, but over a week had passed without any news.
Chen Siling quickly answered her sister’s call.
Jiang Xianyu heard the noise on the other end and couldn’t help but worry, “Xiao Ling, why is it so noisy there?”
Chen Siling found a quieter spot before stopping.
“Oh, there’s a last-minute audition, so I’m running late.”
Just as she was about to head to Hai City, her agent offered her an audition invitation.
Director Chen Sheng’s new drama, “Chasing the Fish,” was in preparation, set to start filming in spring, and they wanted to finalize the cast before the New Year.
She got this opportunity by chance because the originally considered actress for the third female lead declined the audition due to going home for the holidays, so the company secured this chance for her.
The original actress was somewhat famous and might not have been interested in the role, possibly using the holiday as an excuse.
Her temperament suited the role, and being professionally trained, she was a perfect fit.
Now she was at the audition site, but hadn’t been called yet.
Jiang Xianyu was surprised her sister had work at this time, “Can you make it?”
Chen Siling was unsure, “It depends on the audition result. If I pass, I’ll have to meet the crew for dinner tomorrow.”
Jiang Xianyu thought for a moment and asked, “Which drama are you auditioning for?”
Chen Siling didn’t know why her sister was asking but answered, “Director Chen Sheng’s ‘Chasing the Fish.'”
Jiang Xianyu smiled, “That’s pretty good. I think you’ll nail this audition. I’ll come to the Film and Television City to find you, and we can head out from there.”
Chen Siling hesitated, “Sis, it’s almost New Year, and tickets are hard to come by. How are you going to get here?”
During the Spring Festival travel rush, tickets are usually sold out.
Jiang Xianyu replied, “Don’t worry, I’ll figure something out.”
After reassuring her sister, Jiang Xianyu hung up the phone.
She didn’t make any effort to avoid being overheard while on the call, so Su Linyuan asked, “Is there anything I can help with?”
Jiang Xianyu looked up to see the concern in his eyes.
She shook her head gently, “No need, I’ll try to handle it myself.”
With that, she checked her phone to see if there were any tickets available for tomorrow.
She soon discovered that both train and plane tickets were sold out.
She stared at her phone, as if her gaze alone could conjure up a ticket.
“Hey, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but if you’re heading to the Film and Television City, I can get you a first-class ticket,” Su Linyuan offered, noticing her expression.
With the New Year approaching, the obsession with celebrating is deeply ingrained in the culture, so tickets are scarce.
“It’s okay, I can catch a ride-share,” Jiang Xianyu replied.
Su Linyuan frowned, “Ride-shares aren’t safe.”
Especially considering Jiang Xianyu’s attractive appearance, what if something happened?
The thought of a tragic incident involving a ride-share driver flashed through Jiang Xianyu’s mind, making her pale.
“Then I’ll pay you for the plane ticket,” Jiang Xianyu decided to opt for the safer travel option.
She was quite cautious about her safety.
Mentioning money seemed to sour Su Linyuan’s mood.
“Do you really have to be so meticulous? Most housemaids would jump at the chance to take advantage of their employers, but you refuse even what’s offered.”
Jiang Xianyu replied confidently, “I’m a housemaid with professional ethics.”
Su Linyuan chuckled in exasperation.
Nevertheless, he took Jiang Xianyu’s ID information and had Assistant Zhao book a ticket for her flight to the Film and Television City the next morning.
When he returned her ID, Jiang Xianyu asked, “How much was it?”
Su Linyuan shot her a look and headed upstairs.
Jiang Xianyu was left unsure of what to do.
Even on her last day of work, things weren’t settling down.
Perhaps because Jiang Xianyu was leaving the next day, Su Linyuan soon came back downstairs, but whenever Jiang Xianyu asked about the price, he just scoffed.
Leaving Jiang Xianyu with no way to find out.
She thought she might ask the airline staff about the cost when she boarded the plane.
That evening, Jiang Xianyu returned to Jinxiu Garden and invited her best friend over to hang out.
Liu Lijun naturally agreed.
As they chatted, the conversation turned to Jiang Xianyu’s trip to the Film and Television City the next day.
Normally, Jiang Xianyu could borrow Liu Lijun’s car, but Liu Lijun was also driving home for the New Year, so Jiang Xianyu didn’t ask.
“It’s the end of the year, how are you going to get there?” Liu Lijun inquired.
Jiang Xianyu looked conflicted, “Mr. Su arranged a first-class ticket for me.”
Liu Lijun sat up straight, “Oh? Mr. Su got you a first-class ticket? You’ve got connections, girl!”
“But I feel uneasy about it,” Jiang Xianyu sighed. “I want to pay him, but he won’t tell me how much.”
She felt burdened by the uncertainty.
Liu Lijun casually draped an arm around Jiang Xianyu’s shoulder, asking, “If your previous company offered you a first-class ticket, would you accept it?”
“Of course I would,” Jiang Xianyu replied decisively.
Liu Lijun gave her friend a curious look and asked, “Why?”
Jiang Xianyu explained, “The company wouldn’t just give me a ticket for no reason; there must be a task involved. Why wouldn’t I use it?”
“So, you haven’t really considered Mr. Su as your boss,” Liu Lijun mused.
When comparing her former company to Su Linyuan, it was clear she didn’t place them in the same category.
Jiang Xianyu was silent for a moment, then suddenly had a revelation, “That’s right, Su Linyuan is quite nice. We’re actually friends now.”
Liu Lijun simply smiled and said nothing more.
She had long noticed that her friend had a bit of an avoidant attachment style.
She craved close relationships yet avoided emotional connections.
When relationships became intimate, she instinctively withdrew and resisted. It was a self-protection mechanism to avoid getting hurt from deep emotional contact.
People with this tendency often become overly independent, and her friend was a prime example-wanting to handle everything herself, rarely asking for help or inconveniencing others, managing both life and work independently.
However, her friend’s symptoms weren’t too severe.
It was only during their college years, when they were inseparable, that she gradually opened up.
She suspected her friend might have some affection for Mr. Su but was always avoiding it. So when faced with Mr. Su’s kindness, she instinctively found reasons to refuse.
Like the matter of the plane ticket.
In a typical work scenario, this would be a perk from the boss to the employee, but Jiang Xianyu insisted on paying for it.
Such things can’t be changed overnight; the impact of one’s upbringing is profound.
Mr. Su has a long road ahead.
