- Chapter 43 - Menstrual Pain as a Work Injury
Jiang Xianyu’s menstrual pain eased about half an hour after taking the medication. The discomfort diminished, and compared to the earlier agony, the slight unease felt almost nonexistent.
Gradually, her eyelids grew heavier until she finally drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
By the time Su Linyuan finished researching and was ready to ask if she had any brown sugar at home, she was already asleep.
The sleeping woman still looked somewhat pale, but her brows had relaxed, making her appear softer and more vulnerable.
Jiang Xianyu always seemed unflappable in front of Su Linyuan. She was gentle and emotionally stable, as if nothing could ever truly challenge her.
Yet, it was surprising that a bout of menstrual pain had managed to bring her down.
He tucked her in gently, unaware of the tenderness in his own expression.
“Always acting like a robot, but now she looks so much more docile.”
Satisfied that there was nothing more he could do, Su Linyuan quietly left the room, closing the door behind him.
Jiang Xianyu woke up two hours later.
She rushed to the bathroom, relieved that the first day’s flow wasn’t as heavy as the second day’s. Otherwise, sleeping for over two hours might have stained the bed.
She checked the time; it was already ten o’clock.
Suddenly, she remembered that she hadn’t made breakfast due to her menstrual pain.
Such negligence.
Jiang Xianyu hurried downstairs and saw Su Linyuan sitting on the sofa, with a round object on the coffee table in front of him.
As she approached, she realized it was a durian with an impressively symmetrical shape.
Su Linyuan noticed Jiang Xianyu’s arrival and asked, “How’s your stomach feeling? Any better?”
Jiang Xianyu felt a bit embarrassed.
Earlier that morning, she was in so much pain that she couldn’t care about anything else.
Now, in her clear-headed state, Jiang Xianyu felt somewhat awkward.
It wasn’t about menstrual shame, but discussing such matters with her employer felt a bit odd, especially when the employer was a rather handsome man.
Su Linyuan’s gaze was fixed on Jiang Xianyu, waiting for her response.
Jiang Xianyu braced herself and said, “The painkillers worked well. I don’t feel much discomfort now.”
Su Linyuan was somewhat skeptical about Jiang Xianyu’s words.
Women truly are remarkable beings.
To lose so much blood every month and still be lively is quite impressive.
But blood loss is a fact, and it’s always good to replenish.
Jiang Xianyu didn’t want the conversation to linger on this topic. She glanced at the durian on the coffee table and asked, “Mr. Su, do you like durian?”
“Uh, sort of…”
Su Linyuan’s answer was ambiguous.
In reality, he had never eaten durian before. Since childhood, he couldn’t stand the smell and never tried it.
However, he had read online that durian is warm in nature and can promote blood circulation and relieve cold-induced menstrual pain.
So, he had one delivered that morning.
“Do you want to eat it now?” Jiang Xianyu asked. “If so, I’ll open it.”
She remembered that he hadn’t had breakfast yet.
“Go ahead and open it.” It wasn’t for him to eat, but for Jiang Xianyu. Now that she was awake, it was time to open it.
Jiang Xianyu took out a few plates and a fruit knife. Setting up her stance, she prepared to slice open the pointed end of the durian, feeling a bit like she was about to open a mystery box.
Su Linyuan quietly moved to the edge of the sofa. When the durian is unpeeled, its smell is faint, but once opened, it becomes a biochemical weapon.
As Jiang Xianyu wrestled with the durian, she turned her head and noticed he had disappeared. A quick glance revealed him in the corner.
“Didn’t you say you liked durian? Why are you sitting so far away?” Jiang Xianyu asked.
At that moment, she placed a plump segment of durian flesh onto a plate and pushed it towards Su Linyuan. “It’s ready to eat.”
Su Linyuan was filled with reluctance. “You go ahead. I thought I’d give it a try, but I underestimated the smell.”
Jiang Xianyu could clearly sense his aversion to durian, so she didn’t press the matter further. Many people want to try durian but end up unable to handle it; it’s not something to force.
Su Linyuan said, “You can have it all. No need to save any for me.”
Jiang Xianyu nodded. Besides what she planned to eat, the rest could be made into durian mille-feuille. Getting durian at this time of year must have taken some effort. Unfortunately, he wouldn’t get to enjoy it.
After quickly peeling the durian and arranging the flesh, Jiang Xianyu asked if Su Linyuan had had breakfast.
Su Linyuan replied, “Don’t worry, I had some bread.”
Jiang Xianyu felt a bit guilty. “I’ll make something delicious for lunch.”
Poor employer, having to munch on dry bread in the morning-it was her oversight.
Upon hearing her offer to make lunch, Su Linyuan quickly stood up. “Uh, no need to make lunch today.”
Jiang Xianyu was puzzled.
Su Linyuan rubbed his nose and coughed lightly. “Well, since I didn’t have enough breakfast, I ordered lunch from a private kitchen. They’ll deliver it on time.”
Jiang Xianyu paused, then said, “Mr. Su, you can dock my pay today; it’s fine.”
Su Linyuan sighed, “What are you talking about? When did I say I’d dock your pay?”
Jiang Xianyu insisted, “I was negligent today.”
Su Linyuan waved dismissively. “Negligent? Everyone has off days. Even Qian occasionally had headaches or colds. Docking pay for that would be heartless.”
Jiang Xianyu looked at Su Linyuan, her tone gentle yet earnest. “Mr. Su, you truly are a rare good boss.”
Su Linyuan’s lips twitched slightly. As he turned away, he adjusted his expression and said, “There’s nothing urgent here. If you’re not feeling well, go rest. I’ll call you when lunch arrives.”
Jiang Xianyu was already feeling better and not tired, so she checked for tasks to do. Finding none, she took out her laptop to monitor the stock market.
Seeing this, Su Linyuan also retrieved his documents and mimicked her, working at the coffee table.
Despite having a study, both chose to work in the living room.
At noon, the private kitchen staff delivered lunch, setting it up on the table and introducing each dish.
When they got to a bowl of bird’s nest soup, Jiang Xianyu was taken aback.
The staff explained, “This red date and goji berry bird’s nest soup was specifically ordered by Mr. Su for its blood-nourishing benefits.”
Su Linyuan’s expression turned slightly awkward. He interrupted, “We understand. You can go now; we’re about to eat.”
The staff immediately stopped talking. “Alright, Mr. Su.”
With that, they packed up and quietly left.
Jiang Xianyu lowered her gaze, looking at the bird’s nest soup pushed towards her by Su Linyuan. Her heart was filled with mixed emotions. Although she could afford bird’s nest soup now, this one had a different significance.
“Mr. Su, this bird’s nest…”
Su Linyuan’s heart raced a bit, feigning nonchalance as he said, “Menstrual pain counts as a work injury. This is to help you recover.”
