- Chapter 37 - Do You Have Business with My Housemaid?
Liu Lijun had been observing the situation when Yao Guangzhang stopped Jiang Xianyu. Seeing things taking a wrong turn, she quickly stepped forward and confronted the female colleague holding the coffee.
“So what if she’s a housemaid? Did she eat your rice? Someone like you wouldn’t even qualify to be a housemaid. You can’t cook, can’t clean, and can’t handle anything else. What’s so noble about you?”
The colleague, infuriated by Liu Lijun’s words, retorted, “You!”
“What about me? Don’t think I don’t know your intentions. You thought she might be Mr. Su’s girlfriend, so you tried to cozy up. When you found out she’s a housemaid, you showed your true colors. At least she’s working honestly, unlike some people who only think about shortcuts. It really shows what kind of person you are.”
The colleague trembled with anger, unable to utter a single word, as Liu Lijun had hit the nail on the head regarding her hidden motives.
Yao Guangzhang glanced between Jiang Xianyu and Liu Lijun, having seen Jiang give Liu a box of cake earlier. It seemed they really knew each other. He hadn’t expected Liu Lijun to have this connection.
Liu Lijun sensed General Yao’s gaze and turned to look at him with curiosity. General Yao smiled back and withdrew his gaze, addressing the female colleague, “There’s nothing more here. You can go back.”
Taking the opportunity, the colleague glared at Liu Lijun and Jiang Xianyu before returning to her desk.
Once she left, Jiang Xianyu nodded to Liu Lijun and turned to leave.
General Yao stepped forward, “It’s still early. How about I treat you to a coffee?”
Liu Lijun wanted to say something but was stopped by a look from Jiang Xianyu.
She wasn’t sure what he wanted, but it was a chance to find out his intentions.
General Yao led her to his office.
Liu Lijun, seeing this, had a quick thought and messaged Assistant Zhao on WeChat.
“Assistant Zhao, I just saw the girl who brought lunch to Mr. Su being called into General Yao’s office.”
She wasn’t trying to report General Yao, nor did she believe he’d do anything inappropriate at the company, but she felt his intentions might not be straightforward.
After all, he didn’t know Xiao Yu, so what could two strangers possibly discuss?
Inside General Yao’s office, Jiang Xianyu sat on the sofa and directly asked, “General Yao, right? May I know what business you have with me?”
She assumed he was General Yao, as the female colleague had called him that when leaving.
Yao Guangzhang had someone make coffee and then, with a warm smile, said, “It’s nothing much. I heard Mr. Su hasn’t been at work for a few days. Assistant Zhao mentioned that Mr. Su was injured, and I was a bit concerned, so I wanted to ask about it.”
Jiang Xianyu looked at his eyes filled with concern and replied with a smile, “If you’re worried, Mr. Su is just upstairs. You can visit him yourself.”
“As a housemaid, I’m not at liberty to disclose my employer’s privacy.”
Yao Guangzhang hit a soft wall but didn’t lose his composure.
“Mr. Su is always busy with work. Asking you is just as good. If you’re not comfortable sharing, that’s fine. I just heard that Mr. Su is handling business at home despite his injuries, and I was worried he might be in a bad mood. It’s fortunate you’re there to take care of him.”
“Well, taking care of Mr. Su’s daily needs is part of my job. Besides, Mr. Su has a very good temperament, so he rarely has bad moods.” Jiang Xianyu’s eyes flickered as she replied ambiguously.
Upon hearing that Mr. Su had a good temperament and rarely had bad moods, Yao Guangzhang’s smile became more pronounced.
“That’s good to hear.”
Jiang Xianyu observed the change in his expression, her suspicion momentarily surfacing.
At that moment, the door to General Yao’s office swung open, revealing a tall figure standing before them.
He looked at Yao Guangzhang and asked, “Do you have business with my housemaid?”
Yao Guangzhang stood up, his expression respectful. “Not really, I was just concerned about your injury, Mr. Su, so I wanted to ask this young lady about it. We heard you were hurt and thought of visiting, but Assistant Zhao mentioned it wasn’t convenient for you, so we didn’t go.”
Su Linyuan glanced at him, nodded without further comment, then turned to grab Jiang Xianyu’s wrist, pulling her up. “I left something in the office earlier. Help me bring it back.”
Jiang Xianyu obediently followed Su Linyuan’s lead out of Yao Guangzhang’s office.
Watching Mr. Su hold Jiang Xianyu’s wrist, Yao Guangzhang thought, who says a housemaid can’t become a girlfriend?
From Jiang Xianyu’s tone, it seemed Mr. Su wasn’t in a bad mood during those days at home.
He recalled that the project proposal from Yuan Yi Technology had been sent to Mr. Su for review.
There had been no news for a while, which made him a bit anxious.
But perhaps he was overthinking it. Given Mr. Su’s usual style, if he found any issues with Yuan Yi Technology, he likely wouldn’t be pleased.
With this in mind, he exhaled slowly.
Not far away, at her workstation, Liu Lijun watched her friend being led away by Mr. Su, her eyes alight with curiosity.
She couldn’t help but feel that Mr. Su had a special interest in her friend.
A while back, she had been worried that her friend might fall for Mr. Su’s charm. But seeing them now, she had the impression that it was Mr. Su who was captivated by her friend.
Back then, she had tried to cool her friend’s enthusiasm, but now she felt it was herself who needed a reality check. Otherwise, why would she have such a ridiculous notion?
Once back in the President’s Office, Su Linyuan released Jiang Xianyu’s wrist.
He asked gently, “What did Yao Guangzhang want with you?”
Jiang Xianyu furrowed her brow, recalling General Yao’s earlier words. “I’m not sure of his intentions. He asked about your injury, seemingly trying to gauge your state and mood during those days at home.”
Su Linyuan pondered this, unable to fathom why Yao Guangzhang would be interested in such details. The only connection he had with Yao Guangzhang was through Yuan Yi Technology, whose project documents he had reviewed at home.
He explained the situation with Yuan Yi Technology to Jiang Xianyu.
“This project was initially chosen by Yao Guangzhang, but later General Zhou took it over. I always felt there was something off about it.”
A light bulb went off in Jiang Xianyu’s mind. “What kind of person is General Zhou? Does he get along with General Yao?”
Su Linyuan didn’t mind discussing work matters with Jiang Xianyu, especially since she was quite capable. He replied, “Zhou Qiang is aggressive and competent, but sometimes a bit rash.”
“As for Yao Guangzhang and Zhou Qiang’s relationship,” Su Linyuan chose his words carefully, “it’s fiercely competitive.”
The two often clashed over projects, arguing heatedly.
Being contemporaries, if one received attention from above, the other would inevitably be sidelined and often compared unfavorably.
There was always a subtle tension between them.
“So Yuan Yi Technology was snatched from General Yao by General Zhou?” Jiang Xianyu asked, sensing that Yao Guangzhang wasn’t as simple as he seemed. “From what you’ve said about them, I feel General Zhou might not be a match for Yao Guangzhang.”
From their earlier interaction, Yao Guangzhang seemed more like a cunning strategist.
“Do you think Yao Guangzhang knows there’s an issue with the Yuan Yi Technology project?” Jiang Xianyu speculated.
Su Linyuan’s brow furrowed as he considered her theory. It wasn’t entirely implausible.
Jiang Xianyu continued, “When they compete for projects, does General Zhou usually win?”
Su Linyuan, familiar with the company’s two executives, thought back to past projects. “Out of ten times, Yao Guangzhang wins eight.”
Jiang Xianyu spread her hands, “That’s interesting. With such a winning streak against General Zhou, it’s odd that he couldn’t secure a project he discovered first.”
