- Chapter 34 - Truly a Fellow Traveler
After breakfast, with the sun shining brightly and the snow having stopped, Su Linyuan suggested to Jiang Xianyu, “Since there’s nothing much to do here later, why don’t you take my car, go back, and pack your things? You can stay here for the next two weeks.”
Jiang Xianyu quickly declined, “Mr. Su, there’s no need for that. The snow has stopped, so there’s no safety concern.”
“I’m injured, and I need you to take care of me. Plus, I need your help with work,” Su Linyuan stated without a hint of guilt.
Jiang Xianyu raised her hand silently.
“Mr. Su, if I stay here, do I still get my housing allowance?”
“We’re already halfway through the month, so I’ll give you the allowance for the remaining half as well!” He had initially said he’d cover her rent directly, so a month or half a month made no difference to him.
Jiang Xianyu smiled, her steps much lighter as she left.
She didn’t have much luggage, just a suitcase to pack.
What would have been a twenty-minute bike ride took only ten minutes by car.
The round trip took her just over half an hour.
When Jiang Xianyu was about to place her toiletries in the first-floor bathroom, Su Linyuan suggested, “I don’t use the third-floor bathroom, so you can leave them there. It’ll save you the trouble of moving them back and forth.”
Jiang Xianyu nodded and gathered her things.
Su Linyuan offered to help with her suitcase, but Jiang Xianyu declined. He watched as she effortlessly carried her suitcase up the stairs.
“Quite strong,” he chuckled softly.
From that day on, Jiang Xianyu officially took on the role of a live-in housemaid.
After lunch, Su Linyuan called Jiang Xianyu to the study to help.
Jiang Xianyu was already familiar with assisting and efficiently organized Su Linyuan’s documents.
However, when she saw a folder labeled Yuan Yi Technology, her brow furrowed slightly.
“What’s wrong?” Su Linyuan asked.
Jiang Xianyu opened the Yuan Yi Technology project proposal and hesitated before speaking, “Do you have high hopes for Yuan Yi?”
Recalling the situation with the tech company, Su Linyuan pondered, “Yuan Yi recently overcame a technical hurdle and applied for a patent. The prospects seem promising.”
Jiang Xianyu, however, advised, “I think Mr. Su should investigate more thoroughly.”
Before her rebirth, she remembered that Yuan Yi Technology successfully went public, but a scandal broke out soon after. The patent they applied for was actually stolen from someone else.
Once the news broke, the stock price plummeted, and the first round of financing raised a pitiful amount, not to mention the underwriting fees.
Su Linyuan’s gaze deepened as he stared at the Yuan Yi project proposal, becoming more certain of his previous suspicions.
When reviewing Yuan Yi Technology’s due diligence report, he felt something was off.
The financial statements showed that in recent years, the company had spent less on research, yet they managed to overcome a technical challenge under such conditions.
Of course, this didn’t mean that limited funding couldn’t lead to a breakthrough, but the odds were incredibly slim.
Especially since other data from Yuan Yi Technology looked impeccable, making it hard to pinpoint any issues.
He looked at Jiang Xianyu, surprised, and asked, “Is there a problem with the patent?”
Jiang Xianyu couldn’t help but admire his sharp mind.
It seemed he had noticed something amiss.
She just wondered why, before her rebirth, this project had been approved by Chengyuan Capital.
Seeing Jiang Xianyu remain silent for a long time, Su Linyuan raised an eyebrow, “Can’t say?”
“Not exactly,” Jiang Xianyu thought for a moment and replied, “You’ve already identified the issue. It seems their patents aren’t actually theirs. You might want to investigate from that angle.”
Su Linyuan nodded and set aside the documents related to Yuan Yi Technology.
However, he didn’t continue dealing with the paperwork.
He propped his head up, his gaze fixed on Jiang Xianyu, growing increasingly curious about her.
With so many people in their company, no one had noticed the discrepancy, yet she spotted the problem immediately. Clearly beautiful and capable, yet content to be a mere housemaid.
Though, she did her housemaid duties exceptionally well.
Cooking, cleaning, organizing, repairing, even carpentry-there was nothing she couldn’t do.
He felt she radiated a kind of brilliance, and every time, his gaze found it hard to stray from her.
What to do? He was once again tempted to recruit her.
He was a boss who valued talent.
He was conflicted, unsure whether she’d be better off as his housemaid or as an employee at his company where her talents could truly shine.
Su Linyuan’s gaze was so intense that Jiang Xianyu found it hard to withstand.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
Su Linyuan lowered his hand from his head, slowly leaning toward Jiang Xianyu until their noses were just a fist’s distance apart before stopping.
Jiang Xianyu held her breath nervously, gripping the desk, leaning back as far as she could.
Seeing her tense, Su Linyuan chuckled and pulled back, saying, “I’m trying to figure out what kind of extraordinary person you are.”
Jiang Xianyu blinked unconsciously, then realized, “I’m just a housemaid, nothing extraordinary.”
Su Linyuan looked at her and countered, “Do you think I’d believe that?”
Jiang Xianyu replied, “But I really am just a housemaid.”
Su Linyuan sighed, “Alright, you’re a housemaid. But have you considered changing careers? How about being my secretary? Name your salary.”
“No way,” Jiang Xianyu refused outright.
Su Linyuan was a bit surprised. From her usual behavior, as long as it didn’t violate her principles, she wasn’t shy about putting in the effort to earn more money.
“Why?”
Seeing his determination to get to the bottom of it, Jiang Xianyu felt she couldn’t hide the truth.
“I signed a non-compete agreement. I can’t work in investment banking for two years.”
Now Su Linyuan was genuinely surprised, “You’re really in the same field…”
He wanted to ask which investment bank she had worked at and why she quit, but looking into Jiang Xianyu’s clear eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to ask.
The situation must have been quite unpleasant.
He had wanted her to work for him before, but she refused. If it had been resolved peacefully, she wouldn’t have kept it hidden.
Forget it, he decided not to ask.
Jiang Xianyu was surprised by Su Linyuan’s sudden retreat but also relieved.
If he asked about the reason for her resignation, it would be difficult to explain, likely involving family matters.
