- Chapter 24 - Jiang Xianyu the Repairwoman
Jiang Xianyu closed the study door behind her, allowing Su Linyuan to finally relax his breath. He stood up, stretched his body, and eased his eyes. Reflecting on the recent encounter, Su Linyuan couldn’t help but feel a bit unsettled.
Jiang Xianyu seemed shrouded in a mist, making her hard to decipher. She was attractive, had a pleasant personality, and appeared to excel at everything she did. Why would someone like her choose to be a housemaid? It wasn’t that he looked down on the profession, but in terms of social standing, being a housemaid wasn’t typically a young woman’s first choice.
He couldn’t wrap his head around it, truly baffled.
After a five-minute break, Su Linyuan resumed his work, diving back into the daily grind of paperwork. Without Jiang Xianyu by his side, his work pace inevitably slowed.
Jiang Xianyu was busy in the kitchen until 12:40, finally finishing lunch. She took out her phone and sent Su Linyuan a voice message.
“Mr. Su, lunch is ready. You can come downstairs to eat.”
Su Linyuan listened to the message quietly, closed the file in his hand, and headed downstairs for lunch.
At the dining table, Jiang Xianyu and Su Linyuan sat across from each other. The dishes were still those that Su Linyuan favored.
Looking at Jiang Xianyu, Su Linyuan asked, “Once this month ends, would you like to work at my company?”
Jiang Xianyu paused for two seconds, organizing her thoughts, “Thank you for the offer, Mr. Su, but I won’t be working in investment banking.”
Su Linyuan inquired, “Why not? We can negotiate the salary.”
Jiang Xianyu smiled slightly, “I don’t enjoy high-pressure work environments. Investment banking… it’s too exhausting.”
She didn’t mention the non-compete agreement. She had once snatched a project from Chengyuan Capital, so how could she dare to bring it up in front of their boss?
She wouldn’t be staying here for long; she’d be leaving in a month. There was no need to complicate matters.
Su Linyuan looked at her steadily, then tugged at the corner of his lips, “If you change your mind, let me know anytime.”
He didn’t believe Jiang Xianyu was someone who feared work pressure or shirked responsibilities. Why she was unwilling to join investment banking, he couldn’t fathom.
He respected personal privacy and wouldn’t conduct private investigations.
Jiang Xianyu was recommended by his grandparents, and they surely knew her situation beforehand. As long as there were no issues with her, he wouldn’t meddle in her personal affairs.
Still, it was truly a pity for such talent.
Soon enough, Su Linyuan realized his understanding of Jiang Xianyu was indeed too superficial.
The next morning, after his workout, Su Linyuan went to shower and noticed the showerhead was leaking at the connection. He frowned, quickly finished his shower, and even after turning off the shower, the faucet continued to drip.
Emerging from the bathroom, he saw Jiang Xianyu tidying up the study and approached her, “Jiang Xianyu, the showerhead in the bathroom seems to be leaking. Could you call someone to fix it?”
Jiang Xianyu was surprised; even wealthy households had leaking showerheads?
“I’ll take a look.”
Su Linyuan wanted to suggest calling a professional repairman, doubting she could fix it, but he followed her into the bathroom nonetheless.
The bathroom, having just been used, was still filled with steam and a faint cool fragrance-the scent of Su Linyuan’s usual bath products.
Jiang Xianyu bent down to inspect the dripping faucet.
She quickly figured out the problem.
Turning her head to get up, she didn’t expect Su Linyuan, who was also bending down to look at the faucet, to be so close. Caught off guard, his cool lips brushed against her forehead.
Jiang Xianyu’s eyes widened in shock. Instinctively, she reached out to steady herself against the wall, leaning back slightly to regain her balance.
The air suddenly went still. Su Linyuan’s gaze was fixed on the pale skin of Jiang Xianyu’s forehead, a flush creeping up his ears.
Jiang Xianyu subconsciously softened her breathing, her hand pressing a bit more firmly against the wall.
Su Linyuan’s Adam’s apple bobbed involuntarily. He opened his mouth to speak, but his mind was blank.
Jiang Xianyu sidestepped awkwardly, escaping the proximity of his presence.
Taking a deep breath, she said, “Um, I’ll handle the leak. I can fix it.”
Su Linyuan straightened slowly, his voice a bit husky, “Alright.”
They exited the bathroom one after the other.
Jiang Xianyu didn’t glance back at Su Linyuan, instead heading straight to the tool room to gather what she needed.
Su Linyuan watched her retreating figure, lost in thought.
It wasn’t long before Jiang Xianyu returned with a toolbox.
Su Linyuan followed her back into the bathroom.
Passing by the bathroom mirror, he noticed just how flushed his face was.
His breath caught, heart pounding, and he quickly looked away.
Jiang Xianyu had already calmed herself. She took out a wrench and tried it on the faucet.
The faucet handle was round, making it slippery and difficult to grip with the wrench.
Seeing this, Su Linyuan suggested, “Maybe we should call a professional.”
Jiang Xianyu found a box of rubber bands in the toolbox and began wrapping them around the handle. “It’s fine, it’s not a big deal.”
Sure enough, with the rubber bands in place, the wrench could grip and turn the handle.
Jiang Xianyu worked deftly, the overhead light casting a halo on her dark hair, her features focused and intent in the shadows.
As she twisted the wrench, her lips pressed together slightly, and the corners, usually upturned, unconsciously turned down with effort.
Su Linyuan found himself momentarily entranced.
The handle was soon removed, and Jiang Xianyu glanced down, confirming the seal was broken.
“The seal’s broken, just need to replace it.”
Su Linyuan nodded belatedly, “Alright, replace it.”
Jiang Xianyu chuckled at his delayed response, the awkward tension from before dissipating.
“I’ll order a few seals through a delivery service.”
“Okay.”
After placing the order, Jiang Xianyu waved her phone, “You’ll need to reimburse me.”
Su Linyuan’s lips curved into a smile, “Of course, I’ll cover the repair costs too.”
Jiang Xianyu’s eyes crinkled with amusement, “Thank you, boss.”
Su Linyuan rubbed his nose, “You deserve it.”
Jiang Xianyu appreciated the sentiment.
The delivery service quickly brought the seals, and Jiang Xianyu replaced the old one, reassembling the faucet.
She turned the handle to test it-no more leaks.
Su Linyuan was genuinely surprised she had fixed it. His eyes were full of astonishment.
“How do you know how to do everything?” he asked.
Jiang Xianyu packed up the toolbox, smiling, “It’s nothing, just practice.”
Su Linyuan felt like he was being shown up.
Who becomes adept at repairs without being a professional?
Jiang Xianyu noticed his skepticism but merely smiled downwards, offering no further explanation.
Not every home is like this villa, where problems rarely arise over the years.
Clogged drains, leaking faucets, poorly sealed windows, malfunctioning range hoods, and broken rebounders-these are the norm.
The minutiae of daily life are far more abundant than one might imagine.
