From Dropout to Housemaid-The Upper Crust's Favorite - Chapter 15 - Warm Ears
Butler Lu, unsure of the specifics of Old Master Su’s condition based solely on Jiang Xianyu’s description, decided to err on the side of caution and called the family doctor.
Doctor Zhao, the Su Family’s trusted physician, promptly arrived with his medical kit upon hearing Butler Lu’s account.
When he stepped into the living room, Old Master Su was sitting comfortably on the sofa, which allowed Doctor Zhao to breathe a small sigh of relief.
The old master’s hand, where he’d been pricked by the fish spine, was still a bit red. Doctor Zhao took his temperature and carefully examined the wound. After confirming that it wasn’t deep enough to require a tetanus shot, his expression softened.
Noticing some ointment already applied to the wound, he asked, “How was the injury treated earlier?”
Jiang Xianyu stepped forward and explained in a calm and organized manner, “First, I rinsed the wound with bottled water, then disinfected it with iodine, and finally applied erythromycin ointment.”
Doctor Zhao chuckled approvingly, “That’s excellent care. Just keep an eye out for any redness or swelling around the wound. If there’s a fever in the next few days, make sure to visit the hospital promptly.”
Hearing this, Grandma Su couldn’t help but feel a little anxious.
“It was just a fish spine prick-how could it lead to a fever?”
Doctor Zhao, packing up his medical kit, reassured her, “It’s a rare occurrence, but it can happen. Generally, though, there’s nothing to worry about.”
Jiang Xianyu chimed in to comfort her, “Grandma Su, any wound can become inflamed if not cared for properly. As long as we’re diligent, everything should be fine.”
Grandma Su nodded, “That’s good to hear.”
Doctor Zhao added a few more instructions, “There’s no need to be overly concerned. It’s a minor injury. Just avoid getting it wet and apply the ointment regularly. Chances are, by tomorrow morning, it’ll feel much better.”
Old Master Su, not one to miss an opportunity, grumbled lightly at Grandma Su, “Back in the day, a wound like this was nothing. I’d still go about my work, and by the time I noticed, it’d already healed.”
Grandma Su gave him a light slap on the arm, “That was when you were young! You’re not that spry anymore. At your age, your immune system isn’t what it used to be.”
Sensing the danger of further provoking her, Old Master Su quickly shot a pleading look at Doctor Zhao.
Doctor Zhao cleared his throat and said earnestly, “Madam, rest assured. The old master is in great health. His recent check-up results were excellent. There’s no need to worry.”
Only then did Grandma Su let the matter drop.
Butler Lu escorted Doctor Zhao out.
Grandma Su, however, wasn’t quite done. She turned to Old Master Su and began to scold him again, “You’re always so impulsive. At your age, you should know better! Don’t you know which fish are safe to handle and which aren’t?”
Seeing the situation, Jiang Xianyu quietly slipped out of the room.
After all, preserving the old master’s dignity was important.
Later that evening, Grandma Su received a call from her eldest grandson, Su Linyuan.
The moment the call connected, Su Linyuan asked about the old master’s visit from the doctor.
As the one who had arranged for Doctor Zhao to look after his grandparents, Su Linyuan was always kept in the loop about any developments.
Since it wasn’t a major issue, Doctor Zhao had sent Su Linyuan a brief message on WeChat that evening, informing him that Old Master Su had injured his hand but was otherwise fine.
Still, Su Linyuan, worried that it might be something serious, decided to call and check in.
Grandma Su couldn’t resist venting to her grandson about the old master’s recklessness during the call.
Listening to her, Su Linyuan finally felt reassured.
It turned out to be a fishbone injury.
Just as Su Linyuan finished checking in on his grandparents and was about to hang up, a gentle female voice came through the phone.
“Grandpa Su, your hand shouldn’t touch water for now. Doctor Zhao specifically instructed this-you need to follow his advice.”
Her voice carried a steady rhythm, distinct from Grandma Su’s faster and more animated tone.
Su Linyuan felt a peculiar tickle in his ear, prompting him to hold the phone slightly away and rub his earlobe with his free hand.
Within seconds, his previously fair earlobe turned a bright shade of red, radiating warmth.
Clearing his throat, he said, “Grandma, make sure Grandpa follows the doctor’s orders and avoids water.”
Grandma Su finally snapped out of her thoughts and turned to glare at her husband.
“At your age, you’re not even as sensible as Xiao Yu.”
Old Master Su, thoroughly chastened, had no choice but to let Butler Lu assist him with washing his face.
Seeing her husband finally comply, Grandma Su chatted a bit more with her grandson before ending the call.
After the call ended, Su Linyuan stared at his phone, thinking about the “Xiao Yu” his grandmother had mentioned. A faint smile tugged at his lips before he returned to his work, though his long fingers couldn’t help but rub his earlobe again.
In the days that followed, Old Master Su was kept under strict supervision. Only after his hand was confirmed to be fully healed was he allowed to resume fishing.
When he returned to the lakeside, both he and Jiang Xianyu were greeted with enthusiastic cheers.
Perhaps the abundance of fish caught during their previous outing had affected the lake’s yield, as the past few days had been disappointing for the other fishermen. Now, with Jiang Xianyu back, the fishing enthusiasts were brimming with anticipation.
This time, everyone left with their baskets full.
Of course, Jiang Xianyu received a generous number of red envelopes once again.
Since his first triumphant post on social media, Old Master Su had grown quite fond of sharing updates. This time, he asked Jiang Xianyu to take another photo of his catch.
However, the comments on his post weren’t all praise-some of his old friends teased him about fishing every single day.
Nearly fuming, Old Master Su decided to diversify his posts. He began sharing pictures of his small vegetable garden, his rare orchids he’d nurtured for years, and other snippets of his life.
Each post garnered plenty of likes.
But as he scrolled through the list of people who had liked his posts, he noticed something troubling-neither his son nor his grandson had liked any of them.
Unacceptable!
Thanks to Butler Lu’s casual mention, Su Linyuan soon developed the habit of checking his grandfather’s posts daily and leaving a like.
Watching his grandparents’ increasingly vibrant and playful life, Su Linyuan found his own mood lifting as well.
Time flew by, and Jiang Xianyu had been living at Peach Blossom Source for over a month.
Soon, November 15th arrived.
Today was Jiang Xianyu’s birthday.
Grandma Su, having seen Jiang Xianyu’s ID card, knew it was her special day. She asked Butler Lu to order a beautiful cake.
The Su family had grown fond of Jiang Xianyu. Over the past month, she had been diligent and thoughtful, earning their affection. They decided to celebrate her birthday in a simple yet heartfelt way.
While Jiang Xianyu was preparing dinner, Grandma Su joined her in the kitchen.
Caught off guard, Jiang Xianyu hesitated-this was her job, after all.
Grandma Su chuckled, “It’s been ages since I cooked. I need to get back into the habit of making a few dishes now and then, or I’ll lose my touch.”
Jiang Xianyu nodded in understanding.
The two of them busied themselves in the kitchen, preparing a feast.
That evening, the table was laden with six dishes and a soup.
When Butler Liu rolled out the cake, Jiang Xianyu was still oblivious.
She had rarely celebrated her birthday growing up. Her parents had never bothered to acknowledge the occasion for their “extra daughter.” The few times she had celebrated were thanks to her younger sister or close friends.
Recalling Grandma Su’s unusual involvement in the dinner preparations, she suddenly asked, “Is it Grandpa Su’s birthday today?”
Everyone burst into laughter.
Grandma Su smiled and said, “Today is November 15th-your birthday.”
Jiang Xianyu froze. “My… birthday?”
She quickly checked the calendar on her phone. Sure enough, it was November 15th.
In that moment, an indescribable mix of gratitude and bewilderment washed over her.
