- Chapter 14 - Is Xiao Yu Going Today?
With a pocket full of red envelopes and fishing gear in hand, Jiang Xianyu and Old Master Su marched home triumphantly.
Butler Lu and Grandma Su were visibly surprised to see the two return with such a haul.
Grandma Su asked, “Old Su, did you buy these fish from someone else? This is way too much.”
Old Master Su, uncharacteristically proud, replied, “Nonsense! I caught all of these myself. If you don’t believe me, ask Xiao Yu.”
Jiang Xianyu nodded in confirmation.
Grandma Su scrutinized the old man from head to toe. “Looks like your luck has turned.”
Old Master Su beamed, “I told you, Xiao Yu brings me fishing luck. Those old geezers nearly fought over her.”
He then turned to Jiang Xianyu and said, “Xiao Yu, let’s go fishing again tomorrow.”
“Sure, if you enjoy fishing, I’ll keep you company for a while.”
Old Master Su was overjoyed.
Jiang Xianyu carried the fish to the kitchen, ready to prepare dinner from the day’s catch.
Although they called it a “full fish feast,” it wasn’t going to be all fish. Most of the catch consisted of grass carp and crucian carp. A crucian carp tofu soup and a plate of pickled fish would suffice, along with two or three stir-fried dishes. The rest of the fish could be kept alive with an oxygen pump for three to five days without issue.
Just as Jiang Xianyu was about to start cleaning the fish, Old Master Su entered the kitchen, wearing his reading glasses and holding his phone.
“Xiao Yu, how do you post on that WeChat Moments thing? Show me.”
Jiang Xianyu noticed the old man’s eyes constantly darting toward the bucket of fish and immediately understood. Who could stop a fisherman who rarely catches anything from showing off a sudden bounty?
She took the bucket of fish outside, found a spot with good lighting, adjusted the angles, and snapped several photos. She even had the old man hold the largest fish for a portrait. That photo would go right in the center of a nine-grid collage.
Old Master Su was thrilled. “Xiao Yu, should I change into something nicer before we take the picture?”
Jiang Xianyu chuckled, “No need. Wearing your fishing outfit adds authenticity.”
The old man agreed and followed her advice.
Jiang Xianyu was skilled at photography. During her previous jobs, she often took pictures of dishes for the restaurant, some of which were good enough to be turned into posters to attract customers.
With practiced ease, she selected the best photos, edited them, and helped Old Master Su post them on his WeChat Moments. The caption was simple yet dignified: “An afternoon’s harvest.”
At Chengyuan Capital.
Su Linyuan was sipping coffee while scrolling through his phone when he suddenly saw a new post on his grandfather’s WeChat Moments.
His grandfather’s profile, which had always been pristine and empty, now had a post.
Curious, he opened it, only to nearly spit out his coffee in shock. He started coughing uncontrollably, his handsome face turning red.
Su Linyuan had naturally pale skin, so the redness from his coughing was particularly noticeable.
Hearing the commotion, his assistant Zhao Tianming knocked on the door and entered. Seeing his boss clearly choking, he hurried over to pat Su Linyuan’s back.
Su Linyuan waved him off, signaling for the assistant to leave. Determined, he took another look at the photos in his grandfather’s post.
The photos were truly well-taken, especially the one in the center of the nine-grid collage. Old Master Su’s expression was calm and composed, as if he had everything under control. But anyone who knew him well could tell-beneath that facade, he was absolutely thrilled.
Su Linyuan couldn’t help but wonder, since when did his grandfather start playing around with WeChat Moments?
Apparently, that post was just the beginning.
During dinner, he noticed another update from his grandfather.
The dining table was neatly arranged with dishes, with the pickled fish and tofu soup taking center stage. The caption read: “Freshly caught fish-nothing beats the taste of freshness.”
Su Linyuan struggled to keep his expression neutral.
Those dishes looked untouched, not a single bite taken. How could he possibly know they were fresh?
Still, it seemed his grandfather was getting quite trendy lately.
Was this Xiao Jiang’s doing?
Over the past few weeks, he’d noticed his grandparents seemed more lively than before.
He was starting to get curious about Xiao Jiang’s abilities. His grandparents weren’t the type to easily warm up to people.
The next afternoon, Old Master Su and Jiang Xianyu were getting ready to head out for another fishing trip when Old Li and the others showed up.
“Old Su, are you ready yet? Xiao Yu’s coming along today, right?”
Old Master Su let out a proud snort. “I knew you were all scheming for this.”
Then, with a hint of smugness, he added, “Xiao Yu isn’t just coming today-she even prepared the bait in advance. Just wait and see, I’m definitely catching more fish today.”
Jiang Xianyu was practically the star of the show, surrounded by a group of eager fishing enthusiasts as they headed to the lake.
Today, the crowd seemed even larger than yesterday.
This was undoubtedly the result of free advertising from the fishing enthusiasts.
If Jiang Xianyu hadn’t been through her fair share of ups and downs, she might have struggled to maintain the calm and gentle expression on her face.
Once the fishing gear was set up, Old Master Su and Jiang Xianyu took their seats. On Jiang Xianyu’s other side, Old Li claimed his spot.
Thankfully, Jiang Xianyu was seated between them; otherwise, their fishing rods might have ended up tangling.
With both of them next to Jiang Xianyu, it seemed her presence was indeed boosting their luck.
It didn’t take long before both of them, who usually struggled to catch anything, had some action on their rods.
Old Li reeled in his fish first-a large grass carp.
Meanwhile, Old Master Su pulled his catch out of the water, revealing a wriggling yellow-green shape.
Jiang Xianyu quickly warned him, “Grandpa Su, don’t grab that fish with your bare hands.”
Unfortunately, her warning came a moment too late. In his excitement, Old Master Su swiftly reached out and grabbed the fish.
What followed was a sharp hiss of pain as he dropped both the fish and his rod onto the ground.
Old Li was the first to react. Seeing the fish on the grass, he couldn’t help but remark, “Oh dear, isn’t that an Asian catfish? Its spines are nasty-they sting like crazy.”
Of course, Old Master Su recognized the fish. Locally in Hai City, it was called an Asian catfish, while in Sichuan Province, it was known as a Huang Lading. He’d simply been too excited to think clearly, which led to him getting pricked.
Jiang Xianyu quickly retrieved the medical supplies she’d brought along.
She had prepared them the day before, just in case the old man’s hand got scratched by a fish spine or hook. She hadn’t expected them to come in handy so soon.
Using a bottle of mineral water, Jiang Xianyu cleaned the wound on Old Master Su’s hand. After inspecting the injury, she wasn’t sure if it required a tetanus shot, so she opted to disinfect the area first.
Once the wound was disinfected, she applied a layer of erythromycin ointment.
By now, Old Master Su had calmed down enough to crack a few jokes.
“No need to be so cautious. This old skin of mine is tough-I’ll be fine.”
Jiang Xianyu replied firmly, “This fish is semi-wild. Who knows how many bacteria and parasites it carries? Better safe than sorry.”
Old Li chimed in, “She’s right, Old Su. Listen to Xiao Yu. At our age, it’s better to be careful.”
Ever since Jiang Xianyu had helped the group of old men yesterday, they had all started calling her Xiao Yu, following Su Yunyou’s lead.
Not entirely reassured, Jiang Xianyu sent a message to Butler Lu via WeChat and suggested that Old Master Su head home for the day.
The immune systems of elderly people are weaker, and an infection could lead to serious complications.
Her actions weren’t solely motivated by her job; they were also out of genuine care for the Su Family elders.
She had been with the Su Family for two weeks now. Perhaps it was her age, her unique professional background, or simply her natural ability to connect with older people-whatever the reason, the elderly couple had treated her exceptionally well.
She was determined to reciprocate their kindness in every way she could.
