- Chapter 10 - Xiao Jiang Can Do It All
When it came to taking Jiang Xianyu to join the square dancing group, Old Lady Su was particularly enthusiastic.
By 7:30, she was already eager to head to the square.
Jiang Xianyu figured there wasn’t much else to do, so she might as well treat it as a post-meal stroll. She and Grandma Su set off together.
When they arrived, there were already two people at the square.
Both were around Grandma Su’s age. One looked sharp and capable, while the other had the warm demeanor of a village grandmother-simple and kind.
Although this villa community was home to top-tier elites, not everyone had been born into wealth. Some had built their fortunes from scratch. While their current social standing was high, even those who might look down on humble beginnings wouldn’t show it openly. After all, you never knew when you might need to collaborate with someone.
The two women greeted Grandma Su warmly, calling her “big sister” with affection.
They were curious about Jiang Xianyu. When they learned she was the Su Family’s new housemaid, they were visibly surprised.
It wasn’t every day you saw such a young housemaid. To someone who didn’t know better, she might have been mistaken for one of Grandma Su’s younger relatives.
Jiang Xianyu, no stranger to navigating social situations, greeted them politely and quickly struck up a conversation.
Her easy demeanor left a good impression, and the two women began to see her in a new light.
Old Lady Su, holding Jiang Xianyu’s hand, praised her enthusiastically. “I’m not exaggerating-Xiao Jiang is amazing. She’s good at everything. I just adore her.”
Hearing this, the others warmed up to Jiang Xianyu even more.
Jiang Xianyu, however, knew their friendliness was largely out of respect for Grandma Su.
She didn’t mind. Her sole purpose in coming was to exercise. She had a clear goal, and everything else was secondary.
Besides, these well-mannered ladies wouldn’t dare say anything unpleasant in front of Grandma Su. Jiang Xianyu felt perfectly at ease.
Before long, more people trickled in.
The group wasn’t large-just ten people, including Jiang Xianyu.
Leading the square dance group was Grandma Qi, a spirited woman in her sixties. She was bold, lively, and full of energy. Her family’s butler had even delivered the sound system for her.
When she heard Jiang Xianyu would be joining them, she was delighted.
“Let’s run through the moves once so Xiao Jiang can get the hang of it,” Grandma Qi suggested.
Jiang Xianyu nodded. “Got it.”
Grandma Qi started the music, but Grandma Su froze for a moment. “Sister, didn’t we agree yesterday to play that Phoenix Legend song? Why’d you change it?”
Grandma Qi cleared her throat and leaned in close to Grandma Su, lowering her voice. “Big sister, we’ve got a young person here now. We need to show some taste! We can’t let her think we’re outdated. This English song has a nice rhythm too.”
Jiang Xianyu, with her sharp hearing and proximity, caught every word.
After a moment’s thought, she spoke up. “Grandma Qi, do you have any Phoenix Legend songs? I’m a beginner, and I’m worried I might not keep up with this one.”
The others quickly chimed in. “Exactly! Xiao Jiang’s just starting out. It’s better to stick with something basic.”
Everyone was used to dancing to Phoenix Legend. Switching to an English song all of a sudden felt… off.
Grandma Qi glanced at Jiang Xianyu, hesitant. “So… Phoenix Legend it is?”
Jiang Xianyu met her gaze with unwavering determination. “Yes, Phoenix Legend is perfect. Sometimes, the most popular things are the most timeless. Let’s enjoy the best of both worlds.”
After receiving confirmation, Grandma Qi beamed with energy and went to change the music.
As the rhythmic beats filled the air, the atmosphere instantly shifted. The elderly ladies, full of vigor, began to dance enthusiastically.
Jiang Xianyu followed behind Grandma Su, mimicking the moves. Her petite figure and obedient demeanor made her look particularly endearing.
She wasn’t the type to struggle with coordination, so after a few rounds, she had pretty much mastered the routine.
By the time the dancing ended, Jiang Xianyu felt noticeably refreshed and energized.
The elderly ladies didn’t leave right away. Instead, they strolled over to the gazebo to rest for a bit.
One of the grandmas pulled out her phone and noticed a missed call. She frowned and muttered, “These phones nowadays are just no good. I haven’t even had this one for long, and now it doesn’t even ring when there’s a call.”
Her comment seemed to strike a chord with the others.
“My phone’s the same. So many features I can’t figure out.”
“Mine stops working for video calls as soon as I step outside. I don’t even want to carry it around anymore.”
“I actually liked the old flip phones better, but my son insisted this expensive one was better quality.”
“…”
Jiang Xianyu listened quietly and quickly pieced together the situation.
It seemed these grandmas were struggling with their smartphones, unable to navigate the many features. Given their social status, using an old-fashioned phone might invite gossip about their children being unfilial-after all, they were wealthy, so why would their parents be using outdated devices?
Besides, with housemaids and caretakers around, there usually wasn’t much need for them to rely on their phones. As a result, they didn’t pay much attention to learning how to use them properly.
Grandma Su, recalling how Xiao Jiang had fixed her own phone’s sound issue the other day, suggested, “Why don’t you let Xiao Jiang take a look? Yesterday, my phone had no sound, and she fixed it in no time.”
As soon as she said this, everyone eagerly pulled out their phones. The grandma with the missed call was the first to hand hers over.
Jiang Xianyu examined the phone and quickly discovered the problem-it had accidentally been switched to silent mode.
Speaking gently, she explained, “Grandma, your phone isn’t broken. You just accidentally pressed the silent button. See this little speaker icon with a line through it? That means it’s on silent. Just tap it, and when the line disappears, the sound will work again.”
The grandma’s face lit up with understanding. “Oh, I see now! That makes sense.”
And so, Jiang Xianyu transformed into an impromptu phone technician. Some phones had the network turned off, others had been switched to airplane mode by mistake. The issues were minor but varied.
In truth, these grandmas could have asked their children or household staff for help. However, asking their children was only feasible a few times-repeatedly needing assistance with the same issue might test their patience, especially since their children were often busy.
As for the staff, while they wouldn’t show impatience, constantly seeking their help might undermine the grandmas’ sense of authority as the heads of the household.
In the end, they often chose to muddle through on their own.
After this little episode, Jiang Xianyu became quite popular among the grandmas.
Now, whenever she walked through the villa community, she’d often run into one of her dancing companions who would greet her warmly. Some even invited her over to their homes for a visit.
This newfound attention made Grandma Su a little jealous.
By now, Jiang Xianyu had been with the Su Family for two weeks and had settled into a comfortable rhythm with the elderly couple. She no longer felt the need to tread so cautiously.
On October 9th, Jiang Xianyu received a text notification on her phone about a deposit to her bank account. She checked and saw that it was the compensation from Huayuan for last month’s non-compete agreement-10,000 yuan.
Just as she was about to put her phone away, another notification popped up.
This time, it was a deposit of 50,000 yuan. She froze for a moment, staring at the message.
The text didn’t reveal the sender’s name, so she exited the message and logged into her mobile banking app. There, she saw the sender’s name: Chen Siling.
Her grip on the phone tightened.
That was her sister’s name. After being sold to a neighboring village, her sister had been renamed Chen Siling.
Her sister was two years younger than her-23 years old this year-and should have graduated about a year ago.
In her previous life, before her untimely death, her sister had entered the entertainment industry as a small-time actress. She had played some memorable supporting roles-not quite a household name, but successful enough to live comfortably.
Knowing her sister was doing well had been Jiang Xianyu’s greatest comfort.
She remembered that after her sister gained some fame, their parents had tried to reclaim her, only to be harshly rebuffed by the Chen Family. That had put an end to their plans.
However, in her previous life, her sister had never sent her money. Could it be that her resignation this time had somehow reached her sister’s ears?
