Fox's Charm, Heart's Chaos - Chapter 5 - The Struggle Between Two Kings 2
Wan Mimi looked around the room and at the bed she had been sleeping on. The canopy was made of sheer white fabric, while the bedposts, bed frame, pillows, and bedsheets were all the same shade of brown. She then turned her attention to the desk by the window. It, too, had a brown wooden surface, accompanied by a brown wooden stool, a brown wooden tea tray, and a brown wooden plate. The tea set was made of purple clay. Looking further, she noticed that every piece of furniture in the room, including the intricately designed and heavily carved vanity table, was brown as well. Could it be that the previous occupant of this room had a particular fondness for the color brown? But then, why had they used a white canopy? It was strange-this stark contrast in the room’s decor created an oddly harmonious yet unsettling atmosphere.
Feeling hungry, Wan Mimi glanced at the tea snacks sitting on the wooden plate on the table. The snacks were beautifully presented, looking as delicious as they smelled; even from two meters away, their subtle fragrance drifted into her nose.
Throwing off her covers, she climbed out of bed. Completely ignoring the strange look the chatty young girl gave her, Wan Mimi took three quick strides to the table. She plopped herself down and immediately picked up a snack to eat, pausing only to pour herself some tea to drink between bites.
“You old fox! Haven’t you lived for tens of thousands of years, already possessing spiritual sense? And yet, you still engage in such uncouth behavior. Honestly, someone like you hardly deserves to be matched with my lord, the devil king. Eating like this…”
The young girl was certainly the talkative type, chattering away like an elderly woman. Still, Wan Mimi thought, this little girl was the most human-like person she had encountered since her transmigration. She didn’t seem hell-bent on taking Wan Mimi’s life, unlike others she had met, nor was she cold and wordless like the devil king, with his chilling gaze.
Now that she was no longer human, Wan Mimi began to miss the days when she was. At least as a powerless, penniless human being, no one would casually try to end your life. But now, after just one day in this strange new world, she had already experienced so much chaos. If she didn’t have strong mental fortitude, she might’ve chosen to end it all right then and there.
With that thought, Wan Mimi suddenly lost her appetite. Holding half a tea snack in her hand, she sighed. What was the point of eating when she wasn’t even sure she could survive?
She placed the unfinished snack back on the plate and lifted her head to glance outside the window. That’s when she overheard people outside saying that the devil king and the lion king had started fighting.
Curious, Wan Mimi wanted to step outside to take a look. However, her intent was quickly noticed, and the young girl moved to block her way.
“You’d better stay put. This is already the second time that our lord, His Majesty the Devil King, has personally gone to battle for your sake. If something happens to you, wouldn’t that mean I’ve dragged him down? So, listen here, you old fox-stay right here and don’t even think about moving. If I catch you wandering around, I’ll break your legs, no question. And don’t forget, your spiritual power is pretty much useless now. If it comes to a fight, let’s just say you might not walk away unscathed…”
Sigh, here we go again.
Wan Mimi, who had just managed to half-sit up, gave up and sank back onto the bed. Moments ago, she felt like she’d lost her appetite. Now it seemed there wasn’t anything else to do but eat.
Seriously, how did people here kill time? There was no television, no computers, no smartphones, no video games-nothing. What did they do all day? Sit around until the hours just slipped away?
She found herself longing for all the comforts of the twenty-first century.
And what about the lion king and the devil king? How was their fight going? Which one of them would she prefer to win? Hmm… obviously, the devil king!
Still, this nosy little girl was keeping far too close an eye on her. Otherwise, maybe she could have snuck out for a peek.
Then again, escaping wasn’t exactly a challenge. This girl, for all her bossiness, seemed just as eager to watch the action as Wan Mimi was. It wouldn’t take much effort to trail behind her unnoticed.
When Wan Mimi arrived, she spotted the two men facing off. The lion king said something, but the devil king remained silent, simply watching him intently.
Wan Mimi exhaled in relief, patting her chest. Thank goodness, they haven’t actually started fighting.
But then the lion king spoke again before suddenly launching an attack. The devil king, who had been fully prepared to block the strike, was abruptly obstructed by a figure in white who had stepped into his line of vision.
The devil king had no intention of provoking the lion king unnecessarily. However, he also couldn’t allow the lion king to storm into his territory without so much as lifting a finger in defense. That would not only be disgraceful but outright foolish.
And then there was the issue of the millennium spirit fox. She wasn’t just some trivial thing he could simply hand over because someone demanded it. Such a deal would hardly befit him as the devil king. True, the devil clan couldn’t compare to the white lion divine clan in terms of power, but they were far from pushovers. Not even the prestigious white lion divine clan should think they could disregard protocol so blatantly.
As the devil king’s amber eyes locked on the figure in white, he saw it crash to the ground with a forceful impact. A deep patch of red stained the front of her chest, starkly illustrating the severity of her injury.
He felt an unexpected pang of emotion-an unfamiliar kind of unease.
This millennium spirit fox hadn’t done anything to deserve this chaos. It was merely the peculiar nature of her body that had caused such an uproar. If it weren’t for this “gift,” Wan Mimi might have lived her days as an ordinary, cheerful, and playful fox.
The Devil King initially had no intention of arguing with the Lion King over the Millennium Spirit Fox. He didn’t necessarily need it, and handing it over to the Lion King was an acceptable option, especially since the White Lion Divine Clan was much stronger than the Devil Clan. However, since the Millennium Spirit Fox was injured because of him, he couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. Moreover, the fox was a valuable creature, and seeing its current state only solidified his resolve not to give it up.
With a wave of his hand, he ordered his subordinates to take the Millennium Spirit Fox away, while he himself stared at the Lion King with a gleam in his eyes.
Moments later, the Lion King and the Devil King were engaged in a fierce battle in the woods, exchanging blows in a lively skirmish.
Their followers watched the battle from the sidelines, not intervening, as this was a duel between kings, far beyond what their lesser strength could influence. Instead of accidentally causing harm, they chose to watch vigilantly, ready to react if the opposing side made a move.
Lion King Chong Jian felt extremely frustrated. The prey he had almost secured had mysteriously vanished before he could enjoy it, and now that it was in another’s territory, they refused to return it, deepening his irritation.
However, he was determined to possess the Millennium Spirit Fox. If he couldn’t have it, then he would rather destroy it, ensuring that no one else could have it either. If there was to be suffering, he preferred it be shared among all, rather than having someone else overturn his plans and lord over him.
The Heaven Realm was always watching the White Lion Divine Clan. It would be a great pity if they couldn’t secure the Millennium Spirit Fox, but if they did, the Heaven Realm would no longer be able to touch him. This was why they were so intent on sabotaging his offering ceremony.
The red flag in the hands of the Lion King billowed, transforming what seemed a somewhat feminine weapon into one of unmatched heroism in his grasp. The flag moved unpredictably-now rigid as a steel blade, now fluid as flowing water-eluding any attempt to anticipate its movements.
Devil King Xilaphiel simply closed his eyes, relying on his hearing to discern his opponent’s moves, which proved to be more effective than using his sight. The two were evenly matched, but the Lion King had an edge with the unpredictability of his weapon. However, Xilaphiel had now deciphered this advantage, gaining the upper hand.
After a while, the Lion King spotted a weakness in Devil King Xilaphiel, and the two, restraining each other, were once again locked in a stalemate.
The subordinates standing on the outskirts watched as the red and black auras intertwined in the air, trapping the two combatants within their radiant glow. At times, the light exploded brilliantly, and at others, it faded into near invisibility. Their movements shifted like phantoms, constantly transforming. In the blink of an eye, the battle had gone through more than a hundred exchanges, yet neither side showed any signs of conceding ground.
If this fight continued at such a pace, it was clear that, even after battling for a hundred years, there might still be no definitive outcome.
Both fighters seemed to realize this. After one particularly fierce strike, they simultaneously withdrew, retreating back to their respective sides, standing at a distance and glaring at each other from afar.
The moment they landed, the weapons in their hands vanished. Yet the image of the red banner trembling against the black spear was deeply etched into the minds of everyone present. Such a display of power was likely something that-no matter how many thousands of years passed-might never be witnessed again.
The lion king, Chong Jian, furrowed his brows before turning away. Without a word, he began walking back, followed by his subordinates. Slowly, their silhouettes dissipated into a cloud of red mist lingering in the sky until they vanished entirely.
Xilaphiel, the devil king, kept his gaze fixed in the direction where the lion king had left. His expression remained intense as he stood there for a long while, his brows furrowing tighter with every passing second. Ultimately, he took no further action. Instead, he turned and returned to the devil’s palace, carrying the unconscious millennium spirit fox.
Inside the devil’s palace, Wan Mimi had been placed back into the same room where she had originally woken up. When she finally regained consciousness, she overheard whispers that the devil king and lion king had fought, and it seemed that the cause of their clash was… her.
She couldn’t help but be puzzled. She hadn’t done anything extraordinary, yet people seemed determined to fight over her. How odd. But, well, it did feel a little good to have such importance placed on her. Besides, during that moment of chaos before she had passed out, she had managed to glance at the lion king. Wow-he was indeed handsome. His sharp brows and star-like eyes gave him an incredibly striking appearance. Unfortunately, she hadn’t been able to get a closer or longer look.
She tried moving her body. Ouch, a bit sore.
Just as she attempted to push herself into a seated position, she accidentally lost her balance and tumbled backward, dragging down part of the delicate white canopy in the process. What a mess. She’d hoped to use it for support, but instead, the whole thing came crashing down with her. How embarrassing.
With a sigh, Wan Mimi gave up and decided to just stay in bed. After all, her body seemed to recover quickly enough on its own. She shifted to find a more comfortable position, lying back down, and before long, her mind drifted off to replay the events that had recently unfolded.
The lion king clearly sought her with a specific purpose in mind. And as for the other guy from before-what had the girl called him? Right, the flame spirit king. His intentions couldn’t have been clearer: he was sent to kill her. But then… what did the devil king want? Having proven to be useful to the lion king, wouldn’t that mean she might also hold value for the devil king? And yet, after having spent a day in this palace, she hadn’t seen or heard anything to indicate that Xilaphiel intended to harm her.
What’s more, the talkative young girl had even mentioned marriage. Marriage?! To the devil king?!
Could it be that… the devil king had taken a liking to her? That couldn’t be, right?
But wait. Hadn’t they kissed earlier? Hmm, come to think of it, that kiss didn’t feel so bad. Still, was Xilaphiel interested in her appearance only, or was it something more? What could he possibly see in a millennium spirit fox like her?
Regardless of his intentions, Wan Mimi couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling in her heart. Staying here was undoubtedly dangerous. Xilaphiel was clearly powerful, and if she remained in this place, she might never even get the chance to escape.
No, she couldn’t afford to stay here. What if the devil king had some ulterior motive for her as well? If it was just to seduce her, she might be able to deal with it. But if it was something far worse-if it was her life he wanted-then that would truly be the end of her.
