- Chapter 6 - Acquaintance Crime
As soon as Zhang Wen heard this, her eyes lit up instantly. It seemed that the Tao Master wasn’t angry with her and was still willing to continue helping her with fortune telling.
What a kind Master!
“Yes, yes,” she quickly stood up, walked to the nearby bookshelf, and took out a photo frame from one of the compartments. She held the frame up to the phone’s camera: “The one in front is my younger brother. My name is Zhang Wen, and his name is Zhang Wu.”
The photo frame contained a family portrait. Two middle-aged men and women were sitting on stools, with Zhang Wen standing behind her parents, one hand on her father’s shoulder and the other on her mother’s, wearing a bright smile.
Her six-year-old brother, who wasn’t tall enough yet, stood in front of their parents. He was sucking on a lollipop and bore a slight resemblance to Zhang Wen, with lively eyes and a charming appearance.
Seeing her brother’s image in the photo, Zhang Wen felt a surge of overwhelming sadness. Her previously calmed emotions were stirred again, and her eyes turned red.
The pressure on her was immense, and she desperately needed an outlet to vent. She couldn’t help but want to confide in someone: “At night, he came to my room while I was studying and said he wanted to eat fried chicken. My mom had told him he couldn’t have fried chicken, so I didn’t agree.
Then he asked if he could play a two-player game with me, but I was busy preparing for my final exams. How could I have time to play with him?
If I had just given him the fried chicken…”
Would he have run away? Zhang Wen was filled with self-reproach.
[Was he so eager to eat fried chicken that he ran off to the fried chicken shop?]
[Very likely. My dog suddenly ran out the other day, and I wondered where it was going. Turns out it went to the convenience store next door to beg the owner for sausages. So annoying.]
An Rugu’s gaze fell on the brother’s eyes in the photo. Remembering Zhang Wen’s earlier mention of her brother’s mischievous nature, she felt a connection and said, “As the saying goes, the eyes can convey the spirit. In physiognomy, a person’s intelligence and fortune are closely related to the brightness of their eyes. Your brother is as smart as you.”
Hearing the Master’s praise, Zhang Wen felt a sense of joy, but then reacted with a hint of frustration: “But he shouldn’t be too smart, or else he wouldn’t dare to run off like that.”
An Rugu decided not to beat around the bush and said directly, “I know where your brother is.”
“Really?!” Zhang Wen nearly jumped up, her voice filled with excitement: “Master, where is he?”
Compared to the excited Zhang Wen, An Rugu remained very calm, exuding an air of mystery: “Do you want me to guide you there, or should I just send you the address?”
When Zhang Wen first entered the live streaming room, she witnessed the scene of catching a scammer and quickly understood An Rugu’s words. Aware of An Rugu’s capabilities and too afraid to go alone, she hurriedly made her choice: “Please guide me there.”
As soon as the message was sent, the live streaming room erupted.
【Wow, the first half was catching a scammer, and the second half is directly rescuing a kid. Even the police officers at the station aren’t this busy.】
【My aunts, uncles, and cousins, whom I called to watch the stream earlier, are now huddled around my phone. They look even more excited than the host’s guests…】
【The host looks so serious, but who knew she’s such a genius? She totally gets what we want to see.】
【The show’s effect is explosive!】
The audience unanimously believed that An Rugu was preparing to create a spectacle, and in fact…
They were right.
Even though she was aloof, she understood that building popularity was a challenging task for a small streamer. A straightforward fortune-telling stream could be somewhat dull, so adding some entertaining elements would help boost the viewership faster.
Moreover, this situation was a bit special, and she wanted to give the destined person a sense of ceremony.
That way, they’d feel their money was well spent.
Thus, Zhang Wen, holding her phone with the camera facing her, put on her headphones and excitedly slipped on her shoes, ready to go find her brother.
Just then, the door suddenly opened, and a man and a woman walked in one after the other.
They looked distressed, their hair disheveled, clearly having had no rest.
They had searched all night and into the morning, asking everyone they could along the way and even reporting to the police, but still found no useful leads. The only clue they had was that the child had headed south after leaving the neighborhood.
Staying up all night and working intensely might be a small matter for young people, but it was quite a burden for middle-aged adults. Exhausted, the parents decided to come back to rest for a while.
The father was carrying a bag filled with yet-to-be-posted missing person flyers. Seeing Zhang Wen about to leave, he frowned: “Didn’t I tell you to come back and sleep? What are you going out for?”
Seeing her parents return, Zhang Wen felt like she had found her allies. Without answering her father’s question, she exclaimed excitedly: “Dad, I know where my brother is!”
Hearing this, the father’s eyes widened, believing her, and he quickly asked: “Where did you get this information?”
Zhang Wen hurriedly showed them her phone screen, which displayed the live streaming room: “The Master helped me figure it out. I’m going to find him now!”
The father and mother: “???”
Master?
Had their daughter lost her mind from staying up all night?
The mother immediately grabbed Zhang Wen’s hand, trying to calm her: “Don’t panic. We just went to the police station again. They’re investigating the leads and should find him soon. Let’s just wait for news at home.”
Seeing their disbelief, Zhang Wen, still visibly excited, explained: “Dad, Mom, you have to believe me! This Master is really accurate!”
The father and mother: “…”
They looked at their daughter, their sleep-deprived minds filled with doubt. Was their daughter always like this? They had never known her to be superstitious.
Their entire family didn’t believe in metaphysics!
The mother, thinking her daughter was blaming herself too much for her brother’s disappearance, was both worried and anxious: “Wen, we don’t blame you for your brother going missing. It’s our fault. If we had taken him with us when we went back to our hometown, this wouldn’t have happened.”
The father added: “Exactly, just stay home and wait. If the police haven’t found him, how could a fortune teller? Don’t get scammed and end up thanking the scammer.”
Zhang Wen wanted to explain to her parents that she wasn’t being superstitious-An Rugu was genuinely accurate!
But she knew it would be hard to convince her stubborn parents with just a few words. Besides, she had been live-streaming with over a thousand viewers, and she didn’t want to cause too much trouble for the host by delaying too long.
So she stopped explaining, walked out the door, and started running down the street.
Once she found her brother, her parents would believe her.
The parents, unable to stop Zhang Wen in time, watched her run off until she was just a speck in the distance. Feeling something was off, they quickly dropped what they were holding, closed the door, and followed her.
Both were deeply concerned-their daughter must have been scammed!
Meanwhile, guided by the voice in her headphones, Zhang Wen sprinted down the street, eager to see her brother.
Soon, people in the neighborhood witnessed a peculiar sight: Zhang Wen running like the wind, with her parents huffing and puffing behind her.
“Go to the end of Xuanwu Road. There’s a community there. Just go in.”
“Got it,” Zhang Wen replied, panting as she arrived at Yuefu Community.
When she saw the community, she froze, surprised. It was only two streets away from her home, and the name sounded oddly familiar.
“Building 13, Unit 1801.”
【The kidnapper must live there!】
【Honestly, people who abduct children deserve to die.】
【Every child abduction leaves a broken family. Kidnappers should all be wiped out.】
Zhang Wen felt a sudden clarity, as if she was getting closer to the truth. She was both excited and furious, gritting her teeth.
Those damn kidnappers-she would make them pay!
She hurried to Building 13, took the elevator to the 18th floor, and stood in front of Unit 1801.
【Host’s guest, don’t knock on the door! Kidnappers are ruthless. Stay calm, note the location, and call the police.】
【Leave it to the police.】
Zhang Wen’s hand, poised to ring the doorbell, froze. She realized she was being reckless, and her initial excitement began to fade.
What if the kidnapper was part of a larger group? Even with her regular exercise, she wouldn’t stand a chance.
Just as she was about to leave and call the police officer she had contacted earlier, her parents arrived on the 18th floor via the elevator.
They had chased their daughter for two blocks, sweating profusely and gasping for air, feeling like they might collapse at any moment.
The father was about to scold Zhang Wen for running off when his wife suddenly grabbed his arm.
The mother, as if realizing something, looked at the door in surprise: “Huh? Isn’t this Wu’s classmate’s house?”
Zhang Wen and her father: “???”
The live-streaming audience: “???”
【Wait, this is the classmate’s house? So the classmate is the kidnapper?】
【Wow, a case of acquaintance crime.】
