For Your Happiness - Chapter 66 - The Fruit of Love
- Wu Di, who was already on edge due to the approaching due date, was sensitive to all of Shao Han’s movements. Even though he was still asleep, he could sense when Shao Han got up and where she went, almost like satellite tracking.
Suddenly, Wu Di felt that Shao Han had been in the restroom for too long. He opened his eyes, blinked, and thought, why is she taking so long? Although his body lazily remained in bed, his ears were tuned to the sounds from the restroom.
Something didn’t seem right. Wu Di jumped up and rushed into the restroom.
“Shao Han!” Wu Di exclaimed as he opened the door to find Shao Han looking like she hadn’t fully woken up.
“Huh?” Shao Han looked at the panic-stricken Wu Di, as if awakening from a deep dream.
“You? Why so long?” Wu Di relaxed a bit upon seeing that there was nothing unusual with Shao Han.
“Me?” Shao Han, still not fully conscious, found it strange upon hearing Wu Di’s concern. “Yeah, why?” She sensed something wasn’t right.
“Wu Di, it seems… something’s not quite right,” Shao Han said, looking at Wu Di.
“What’s not right?” Wu Di asked seriously.
“I don’t know, but how come… it just won’t stop.” Shao Han was becoming nervous and scared.
“I’ll get the things, you get dressed, and we’ll go to the hospital,” Wu Di decided promptly.
“Okay.” Shao Han tidied up and changed into clean, convenient clothes. In her heart, she wondered, is it time? But why wasn’t her stomach hurting? Didn’t the books say it should hurt when it’s time? At this moment, it was best to listen to Wu Di. He would surely know what to do.
Wu Di grabbed the necessary items he had prepared in advance and helped Shao Han out the door. After getting into the car, he asked Shao Han, “Do you feel any discomfort now?”
“No,” Shao Han shook her head.
“Alright, I’ll make a call.” Wu Di calmly dialed the phone.
“Lin-Ge, it’s Wu Di. My wife might be going into labor. We’re heading to the hospital now. Can you help me arrange with those hospitals?” Wu Di had pre-arranged doctors, an anesthetist, and a ward for Shao Han.
After finishing the call, Wu Di looked at Shao Han again, started the car, and drove towards the hospital.
“Wu Di, I don’t have any contractions. Could it be time to give birth?” Shao Han was feeling anxious.
“Not all deliveries involve contractions; there might be other signs. Anyway, let’s talk more when we get to the hospital,” Wu Di said seriously. He had read enough to suspect that Shao Han might have a premature rupture of the amniotic fluid, which could easily lead to an infection. Wu Di was very nervous, to the point of trembling, but he knew he had to stay calm. His decisions at this moment were critical, and he couldn’t afford to panic. He took a deep breath, as if bracing for an important battle.
At the hospital, thanks to Wu Di’s connections, all the procedures were swiftly arranged, and Shao Han was immediately taken in for examination. The doctors and nurses were bustling in and out, leaving Shao Han feeling lost and confused. Wu Di whispered in her ear, “Babe, don’t think about anything right now. I’m here for you, just follow the doctors and nurses.”
“Oh,” Shao Han replied.
The doctor conducted an examination and spoke quietly to Wu Di instead of Shao Han. She could only lie there, waiting for Wu Di and the doctor to make their decisions.
After a while, Wu Di approached Shao Han, “My love, you might need a small surgery.”
“What? Why? What’s happening?”
“Your amniotic fluid has ruptured prematurely, and you’re not having contractions. If we wait for contractions to start, the baby might be at risk of suffocation due to the loss of fluid,” Wu Di explained gently yet calmly.
“Ah?” Shao Han tensed up upon hearing that the baby was at risk, which worried her more than her own danger.
“Don’t worry. So, the doctor suggested a cesarean section. It won’t hurt, and I’ll be right beside you.”
“That’s fine, as long as the baby is safe, anything is fine,” Shao Han quickly responded.
Wu Di held Shao Han’s hand tightly, his eyes filled with deep affection. Shao Han started to tremble a bit; she wasn’t afraid of the surgery itself but terrified for the safety of her baby, which pained her more than anything else could.
Wu Di signed the consent form for the surgery. Shao Han was then wheeled into the operating room.
When Shao Han anxiously waited for the doctor, she couldn’t help but feel fear and worry while looking at the medical equipment; it was her first time seeing such a scene. Suddenly, she noticed a tall figure walk in with the doctor. The figure felt so familiar, also dressed in surgical attire and wearing a mask. What’s going on? That person? That person looked like Wu Di. Was she hallucinating? But it felt so real, not like an illusion at all.
Wu Di quickly walked over and immediately held Shao Han’s hand.
“I told you I would stay by your side,” Wu Di reassured Shao Han. She couldn’t believe it. How did he get in here? How was it possible for him to enter? But none of that mattered now. The fact that he was there with her was enough. With him there, she wasn’t afraid of anything. Shao Han smiled at Wu Di.
“The surgery is starting,” the doctor said.
Since only a partial anesthesia was administered, Shao Han could hear their conversation. Wu Di’s hand tightly held Shao Han’s without relaxing.
Wu Di watched the entire procedure and saw the surgical knife glide over Shao Han’s skin. His heart ached, and he instinctively squeezed Shao Han’s hand tightly. Shao Han felt his grip tighten and looked at him, seeing his eyes filled with pain. However, she couldn’t feel any pain herself and didn’t understand Wu Di’s emotions at that moment. Wu Di quickly lowered his head to gaze at Shao Han lovingly, tenderly, and compassionately kissed her forehead. He felt then how truly great women and mothers are.
Shao Han looked at Wu Di anxiously, afraid to ask or speak out loud, waiting in silence. It wasn’t like on TV, where there would be chaos and screaming. It seemed completely different from what she understood childbirth to be as she waited inexplicably for the baby’s cries to signal its arrival.
She could sense Wu Di’s hand alternately loosening and tightening its grip, his eyes filled with pain as he glanced at her, occasionally clouded with mist. Was something wrong with the baby? Why did he have such a pained expression? Why wasn’t he smiling? Why? Shao Han wondered but didn’t dare to ask aloud.
Feeling Wu Di’s grip getting tighter, her large eyes focused solely on him, searching his face for any hint of news.
Suddenly, the sound of a baby crying filled the room. Shao Han saw a tear fall from Wu Di’s eye. She didn’t quite know what she was feeling; she heard it too and felt so excited that her mind went blank for a moment. Wu Di immediately leaned down to kiss Shao Han.
“Babe, our baby… our baby is here,” Wu Di said excitedly.
“Yes, I heard it. I heard it,” Shao Han replied, tears streaming down her face. Was it happiness? Were these tears of joy?
“Thank you, my love,” Wu Di said, kissing her forehead deeply.
The whole experience left Wu Di in awe. How could he not love this woman? The way she brought their child into the world, even at the risk of her own life… Even if she were told at this moment that she had to sacrifice herself to save their child, she wouldn’t hesitate. That must be what maternal love is. Wu Di continued to kiss Shao Han.
“Mr. Wu, come quickly and see your baby,” the head nurse exclaimed excitedly, holding their baby in her arms.
