For Your Happiness - Chapter 59 - Fear of the Unexpected
From the moment Wu Di was certain of the baby’s existence, he seemed to revert to his student days, poring over several books a day, marking key points with symbols. Shao Han was genuinely impressed by his diligence; he meticulously researched and planned her diet to ensure she and the baby received the necessary nutrients.
Shao Han never expected such a remarkable man to do all these things for her with such attention to detail.
“You’re so diligent.”
“Of course, I won’t make the same mistake again.”
“It wasn’t your fault last time, it was mine…”
“How can it not be? If I had been there, it wouldn’t have happened.”
“Do you really need to quit your job?”
“I’m quitting.” Wu Di answered firmly.
“What? Are you crazy?” Shao Han’s eyes widened.
“Is quitting my job crazy? Am I short on money? Right now, the most important thing for me is you and our child.”
“What if it’s a girl?”
“Oh, I think it’s a boy.”
“Hmph, favoring boys over girls.”
“Not at all. Then have another one, and let me have both a son and a daughter.”
“…” Shao Han pouted.
“What? With such excellent genes, don’t you want to have more?” Wu Di looked at her expression.
“All you think about are children, hmph.”
“I think about you too. So, what do you want to eat today? I’ll go to the supermarket.”
“I want to go too. It’s so boring staying at home.” Shao Han hadn’t been out for days due to severe morning sickness.
“Ah? Are you sure you can handle it? I’m worried you might feel uncomfortable or need to throw up.”
“But I really want to get some fresh air.” Shao Han said pitifully, sounding like a little convict.
“Haha, alright then, let’s get some fresh air.” Wu Di laughed and hugged her.
“Really?”
“Go change.” Wu Di gave his permission, and Shao Han, happy as a child, hopped and skipped to the dressing room.
“Hey, don’t jump around too much, you’re going to be a mother.” Wu Di watched her and couldn’t help but smile.
“Hmph, I’m just your baby.” Shao Han was already jealous of the baby before it was even born, making one wonder what it would be like once the baby arrived.
Shao Han and Wu Di happily went to the supermarket to buy some delicious food and items Shao Han needed. Since she was in the early stages of pregnancy, her appetite wasn’t very good. Wu Di tried his best to find foods that could stimulate her appetite, but he made sure to avoid meat, as she couldn’t even stand the smell of it.
Because Shao Han couldn’t eat these meat dishes, Wu Di also refrained from eating them, and had noticeably lost weight. Concerned, Shao Han suggested, “Let’s buy a roast duck today.”
“Ah? You can eat now?” Wu Di thought Shao Han wanted to eat it.
“No, no, it’s for you.”
“If you’re not eating, then let’s not buy it. I’m fine with anything.”
“Forget it, look at you, you’ve lost weight these past few days,” Shao Han said sadly.
“Where? I’m still as strong as ever,” Wu Di flexed his muscles to show Shao Han.
“There definitely is, I’ve noticed. You’ve had to tighten your belt recently,” Shao Han observed carefully.
“Ah? Really? That’s actually good. I’m so tall, too much weight and I’d look like a wall. It’s better to be a bit leaner.”
“But, it hurts me to see you lose weight.”
“Silly, don’t worry. Once your belly gets bigger, you’ll want to eat more. Then, I’ll eat with you and we’ll gain it all back.”
“How do you know?”
“I read about it every day, I’m practically ready to have a baby myself.”
“Haha,” Shao Han laughed uncontrollably at his comment. She didn’t notice a child wildly pushing a shopping cart around the supermarket. As they turned around after finishing their conversation, smiling at each other, the child’s shopping cart crashed into Shao Han’s belly.
At that moment, Shao Han didn’t feel the pain of the impact, but rather a suffocating fear spreading from within her body.
Wu Di froze, instinctively pushing the cart away with too much force, nearly causing the child behind it to fall. But he was too concerned to care about that, quickly shielding Shao Han with his arms, his eyes wide with fright as he looked at her.
“How are you feeling? Did you hit something? Does it hurt anywhere? Is there…” Wu Di’s words tumbled out in a rush.
“I don’t know.” Shao Han’s fear had not yet dissipated, and she stood frozen, seemingly numb, feeling no pain and unable to move.
“Shao Han.” Wu Di grasped her shoulders, shaking her gently.
“Huh?” Shao Han seemed to snap back to reality.
“Did you bump into something?” Wu Di really wanted to ask if she had hit her stomach, if it hurt, or if she felt unwell in any way.
“Yes.”
“Let’s go home.” Wu Di took her hand, leaving everything behind and started to walk out.
“Wu Di.” Shao Han regained her composure and held onto him.
“What’s wrong, do you feel unwell?” Wu Di was visibly anxious. “I shouldn’t have let you come out.” His eyes seemed on the verge of tears.
“Wu Di, don’t be like this.” Shao Han held his hands. “I think I’m alright; nothing hurts.”
“You said that last time too. We’re going home.” Wu Di still insisted on pulling her towards the exit.
“Wu Di.” Shao Han called his name again.
“What if something happens again?” Wu Di suddenly shouted, startling Shao Han and attracting many curious stares.
“It’s alright, it’s always alright.” Wu Di grew agitated, a rare sight for Shao Han who knew him as either calm or, when angry, quite intimidating.
Watching Wu Di’s fury, Shao Han felt both worried and heartbroken, her own tears welling up: “I’m sorry.”
Shao Han’s pitiful appearance made Wu Di’s heart ache, yet he was worried and scared at the same time. He was truly annoyed and angry, wanting nothing more than to leave her behind and find a place to cool off. But he couldn’t; if he left, what would happen to her? What had Shao Han done wrong? Thinking this, Wu Di turned back.
“Let’s just go home. I’m not in the mood anymore.”
“Okay.”
Shao Han followed Wu Di to the parking lot. After they got into the car, Wu Di looked at her again. Seeing him looking, Shao Han quickly said, “Really, I’m fine, nothing hurts, and I don’t feel bad at all.”
“Last time it started out with nothing too,” Wu Di said somberly.
“…” Shao Han dared not make any more excuses, knowing that nothing she said could prove anything, perhaps tomorrow or the day after…
The two had come out happy, but returned home displeased.
“You should lie down on the bed,” Wu Di almost commanded.
“Oh.” Shao Han obediently complied.
Wu Di lit a cigarette and went out to the Balcony. Ever since they started trying for a child, Wu Di had quit smoking, but he was really upset this time and picked it up again. Shao Han felt sad, climbed into bed, and soon hid under the covers, crying to herself.
Wu Di smoked, trying to calm his emotions. After a while, he felt a bit better. Thinking of Shao Han, he extinguished the cigarette, opened the window wider to let the smoke clear out faster, and then decided to go to the Bedroom to see how Shao Han was doing.
