For Your Happiness - Chapter 51 - December 12th
Shao Han came out looking gorgeous, and Wu Di gave her an approving look, whistling, “Nice.”
“Really? I’m not embarrassing you, am I?” Shao Han asked with a smile, seeking confirmation from him.
“Of course not.” Wu Di straightened up, tilted his head, and said, “Let’s go.” He extended his hand to Shao Han, who fluttered over to him like a butterfly.
After changing their shoes, they held hands and stepped out the door. Once in the car, Shao Han considerately placed the iced coffee she had prepared early in the morning for Wu Di in the cup holder.
“When did you make this?” Wu Di’s face lit up with a surprised smile.
“While you were brushing your teeth,” Shao Han said, a bit smug.
“So thoughtful,” Wu Di remarked with a playful expression, still fascinated by her after a year of marriage.
“What are you looking at? Is there something on my face?” Shao Han felt puzzled under his gaze and hurried to check in the mirror.
“No, just admiring how cute you still are.”
“Go on.” Shao Han made a face at him.
“Haha. Even cuter now.”
“Stop staring, it’s annoying. You’re going to say I’m not as pretty as you,” Shao Han complained about Wu Di’s scrutinizing look, which often led to comments like, “Am I not prettier? I think I’m a bit more handsome,” and so on. “Yes, you’re handsome, you’re pretty; otherwise… how could I have been bewitched by you?” Shao Han thought, trying to block his gaze with her hand. But as soon as her hand touched his face, he gently grabbed it and kissed it.
Shao Han playfully slapped his shoulder.
“Shao Han.” Wu Di still looked at her, but Shao Han had already turned her face to look straight ahead, avoiding his gaze to not fall under his spell again.
“What?” Shao Han didn’t look at him, just responding.
“How about…”
“How about what?”
“How about…”
“What is it?” Shao Han pressed him, as he hesitated.
“How about we just go back home? Let’s not go anywhere today, just…” Wu Di said, his expression turning mischievous.
“Just what?” Shao Han turned her head to look at him, intending not to, but once she did, she saw his naughty expression and immediately understood what was on his mind.
“You…” Shao Han glanced at him.
“Please, can we?” Wu Di seemed to have not used his whining skills for a long time.
“Here we go again. I have an important meeting to attend, stop it,” Shao Han didn’t know what else to say.
“But… but… I really want to now.”
“No thinking about that, no thinking about that,” Shao Han shook his head with both hands.
“Alright, alright, fine. You always have your reasons.” Wu Di sulked like a child.
“What’s wrong? Not happy? It’s not that I don’t want to, but it really isn’t the right time,” Shao Han said with a sense of grievance.
“Never mind, I was just saying.” Wu Di buckled up, started the car, gently pressed on the accelerator, and headed toward Suzhou.
“Come on, don’t be mad. Can’t I make it up to you after the meeting?”
“Really?” Wu Di immediately smiled, looking every bit the big boy.
“You… you really are like a kid,” Shao Han laughed, amused by him.
“So, you promise, no excuses this time. I haven’t planned anything today, I… I think…” Wu Di paused.
Shao Han tilted her head to look at him, waiting for him to continue.
“I want a baby,” Wu Di finally said. It had been almost a year, ten months to be precise, since Shao Han’s miscarriage, and they felt it was a good time to try for a baby.
“Oh, okay.” Shao Han nodded in agreement, but a trace of fear lingered in her heart.
Hearing Shao Han agree, Wu Di turned to look at her, saw her head bowed and her hands clasped together-a small gesture she made when nervous. He reached out with his large hand and held her small one.
“Are you a bit scared?” Wu Di asked cautiously.
“Hehe, a little,” Shao Han didn’t want to lie to him, but she was genuinely afraid of another mishap happening-that it might kill her.
“Don’t worry, we will have a healthy baby,” Wu Di reassured Shao Han, believing their love deserved to bear fruit.
“Mm,” Shao Han smiled warmly, nodding deeply as if she were affirming herself.
“Just focus on driving,” Shao Han said as she took his hand and placed it back on the steering wheel.
The drive from Shanghai to Suzhou takes about an hour, but Wu Di drove fast enough to make it in less than that. Along the way, the two chatted, with Wu Di telling Shao Han stories. No matter what they saw on the road, he had a story to tell, and Shao Han, like a curious fool, kept asking, “Really?” “Is that true?”
“You’re not fooling me, are you?” she questioned, one after another.
This was met with Wu Di’s hearty laughter: “It’s true!” “If you don’t believe it, you can check online when we get home.”
“Why would I lie to you?”
Their light-hearted banter seemed to make the time fly by, and soon they arrived at the hotel in Suzhou where the meeting was to be held.
“We’re ten minutes early,” Wu Di noted, checking his watch.
“You go ahead to the meeting, I’ll wait for you in the room.”
“Yeah, that sounds good. Go on,” Wu Di said as he handed the room card to Shao Han.
Shao Han smiled at Wu Di, who found her so adorable that he suddenly felt an impulse to kiss her, not out of any other desire but simply to feel her soft lips.
“I’ll head up then,” Shao Han said, noticing him staring blankly at her in a strange way.
“Hehe, go ahead,” Wu Di snapped back to reality, his lips curling into a slight smile.
In fact, when it came to pregnancy, both of them felt somewhat apprehensive, considering their previous miscarriage had taken a long time to recover from. They were unclear about what this time would bring.
However, Wu Di wanted to keep things light to avoid putting too much pressure on Shao Han.
Back in her room, Shao Han waited for Wu Di, nervously pondering about having a baby, but she understood all too well Wu Di’s deep longing for a child. Although the Wu family was no longer considered aristocratic, continuing the family line was still of great importance, especially since they were in love. Naturally, two people in love hoped to extend their life together with a new life.
After the meeting, Wu Di discussed some business collaborations with a few clients, feeling incredibly relieved and pleased with the clear intentions of cooperation. Free from concerns, several company executives planned to dine together, but Wu Di politely declined.
“I have some very important personal matters today, so I really can’t stay any longer. Another day, when we all go to Shanghai, I’ll treat everyone.”
“Why did Mr. Wu run off like that?” asked Mr. Zhang of Spring Autumn Travel Agency.
“Really? What personal matter is so important? A lover in Suzhou?” someone joked.
“No, no,” Wu Di hurriedly explained.
“With a handsome guy like Wu Di, it’s not just about lovers; he probably has several,” teased Mr. Fan from Huachen Advertising Company.
“Haha, you guys flatter me too much,” Wu Di laughed. “No, it’s because today is my wedding anniversary, so I wanted to celebrate it with my wife.”
“Is that so? That definitely calls for a celebration. Looks like it’s going to be a romantic getaway,” Zhang said.
“Yes, I rushed back home last night, and this morning I brought my wife with me,” Wu Di said with a smile.
“Ah? She’s here?” Fan’s curiosity was piqued.
“Yes, she’s waiting for me in the room. I promised to take her out for some fun and shopping.”
“Why don’t you introduce us, or are you keeping her hidden away?”
“No, she doesn’t like these kinds of gatherings.”
“Ah, Mr. Wu is still quite the traditionalist, huh? Women these days are really something,” Fan said with an exaggerated expression, clearly displeased by the assertiveness of women.
“Mr. Wu isn’t scared of his wife, is he? Keeping her by your side, but actually, it’s her keeping an eye on you, afraid you’ll pull some stunts, haha.” These men, seemingly envious of Wu Di’s good looks and charm, always tried to tease him.
Wu Di was not pleased to hear this; he truly was a traditionalist and didn’t appreciate being seen as weak. Since his wife was beautiful, elegant, and there was nothing disgraceful about her, he picked up his phone to call Shao Han: “Wife, I’ve arrived, you can come down now. I’m waiting here, and then we’ll head out.”
“Oh, okay,” Shao Han obediently responded.
The men fell silent for a while, listening to Wu Di’s phone call. After he hung up, they resumed their discussion on men and women, while Wu Di just chuckled along, his eyes fixed on the door, waiting for Shao Han to appear.
Shao Han arrived at the meeting room door dressed in a black mid-length coat with military-style epaulets, a gray knitted dress that ended above her knees showing off her legs, and knee-high boots. She adorned her chest with a golden wheat sheaf pin, and elegantly pushed open the door, peering inside.
“Wu Di noticed her and gestured for her to come in.
Everyone turned towards the door as Shao Han entered, momentarily stunned by their uniform attention. She quickly glanced at Wu Di.
“Ha, they insist I’ve hidden a lover, which is so unjust.” Wu Di said, looking at Shao Han with pride, knowing her unique beauty was captivating. These men must be charmed by my wife.
“Oh, haha,” Shao Han laughed sweetly.
“Haha, Mr. Wu, no wonder,” Mr. Zhang chuckled.
“Well, it turns out you have a charming wife at home,” Mr. Fan added playfully.
Feeling triumphant, Wu Di thought, “With such a wife, what more could a husband want?” He stood up, opened his arms, and walked over to Shao Han. Wrapping his arms around her waist, he boasted to the other men, “I’ll take my leave now; see you later in Shanghai.”
“Go on, have fun, congratulations to you both,” everyone wished them well as they watched the couple disappear through the doorway.
