For Your Happiness - Chapter 35 - Guesses
Xu Zhuo took Wang Chufan on a tour of the front desk department, housekeeping department, food and beverage department, sales department, engineering department, security department, human resources department, and finally, the finance department, which Wang Chufan was particularly looking forward to. Xu Zhuo seemed to understand what Wang Chufan was scheming, but still maintained a smile, given his position as a senior leader.
“This is our finance department,” Xu Zhuo said upon reaching the sixth floor, first visiting the office of the finance clerks, followed by the office of the finance supervisor, Xiao Zhang. Xiao Zhang, unaware of the identity of the visitor, speculated from Xu Zhuo’s presence that it must be someone important.
“Next is the finance manager’s office,” Xu Zhuo continued, observing Wang Chufan’s expression. Wang’s eyes flickered momentarily before returning to calm, revealing his seasoned composure.
“Oh,” Wang Chufan responded nonchalantly.
Knock, knock, knock.
Hearing the knock, Shao Han called out, “Come in,” while still looking at the spreadsheets on her laptop. She turned her head as the door opened.
“Manager Shao, Mr. Wang from headquarters is here for a visit,” Xu Zhuo announced.
“Oh.” As Shao Han responded, she caught sight of Wang Chufan, who had already noticed her. Dressed in a navy blue business suit, she looked elegant and poised, her outfit striking a different tone from what she wore at the cocktail party.
“We meet again,” Wang Chufan said with a smile, extending his hand.
Shao Han shook his hand with a smile, saying, “Hello, Mr. Wang.”
“Nice office you’ve got here,” Wang Chufan remarked, looking around.
“Heh, it’s alright.”
Xu Zhuo checked his watch; it was already four o’clock: “Mr. Wang, we’ve toured around. Shall we head back to the VIP room to rest for a while?”
“Oh, sure,” Wang Chufan agreed. “Manager Shao, you can continue with your work.”
Shao Han nodded with a smile, not engaging further, somewhat uncomfortable under Wang Chufan’s gaze.
Wang Chufan left Shao Han’s office, lowering his head and briefly flashing a secretive smile that went unnoticed as he contemplated his own plans.
Returning to the VIP reception room, Wu Di and Lv Mengmeng were arranging the evening’s dinner, intending to host it well. Upon seeing Wang Chufan return, they stood up and asked, “How is it? Is Mr. Wang satisfied with our place?”
“Hehe, not bad, not bad.”
“Stay and have dinner here tonight.”
“Uh… this… I’m a bit embarrassed,” Wang Chufan feigned reluctance.
“No need to be so polite.”
After exchanging pleasantries, the conversation shifted to industry issues and business philosophies to pass the time before dinner, discussing some policies and development directions, naturally accompanied by many flattering remarks. Although Wu Di internally disliked it, he maintained a polite façade.
Around five-thirty, Lv Mengmeng came in and said, “Mr. Wu, the dinner is ready.”
“Okay, got it,” Wu Di turned back to Wang Chufan and said, “Mr. Wang, shall we go?”
“Sure, sure. Just us? Let’s invite Shao Han as well.”
“Oh, hehe, it might not be convenient for a woman.”
“There’s nothing inconvenient about it. I met your wife at the last cocktail party, so it won’t be too unfamiliar.”
“Well… okay then,” Wu Di frowned slightly but quickly smiled again.
“Yes, it’s more lively with more people. After all, she’s also an important manager at the hotel.”
“Hehe,” Wu Di laughed without responding. “Mengmeng, call Shao Han and ask her to come over as well.”
“Alright,” Lv Mengmeng replied.
Xu Zhuo, quietly observing from the side, understood Wang Chufan’s intentions towards Shao Han very well, having been around the block a few times himself. He knew the looks and actions men often had towards women. Though Wu Di was unaware of this, he felt a brotherly closeness to Wu Di and, despite not knowing Shao Han well, he sensed a vulnerability about her that instinctively made people want to protect her. Cursing Wang Chufan in his mind, Xu Zhuo contemplated telling Wu Di about Shao Han, a woman who internalized her feelings and cared deeply for Wu Di, unlikely ever to share her troubles with him.
“You go ahead, I need to use the restroom,” Xu Zhuo excused himself to leave the group.
Due to his injured leg, Wu Di walked slowly, prompting Lv Mengmeng to call Shao Han, who hurried over to assist him.
“Take it easy, Mr. Wu, there’s no rush,” Lv Mengmeng said in a gentle voice. Wang Chufan looked at the two, musing that their potentially ambiguous relationship wasn’t surprising at all. They had even joked about this very topic that morning with Shao Han and Lv Mengmeng, leading Wang Chufan to believe his suspicions were correct. Wu Di smiled warmly at Lv Mengmeng, thinking to himself that there might be a breakthrough.
After receiving Lv Mengmeng’s call, Shao Han hesitated slightly. She felt uneasy about Wang Chufan’s behavior but didn’t want to overthink it, attributing her feelings to mere conjecture. She hadn’t mentioned to Wu Di the remarks Wang Chufan had made at the cocktail party. Given her prideful nature, Shao Han disliked flattery and wouldn’t easily speak such words. Since she was accompanying Wu Di, she decided to go, took a deep breath, and headed out of her office towards the food and beverage department.
Xu Zhuo wasn’t really headed to the restroom; he just needed an excuse to step away and call Wu Di about the happenings at the recent cocktail party. However, he didn’t call immediately upon leaving the crowd but wandered around the restroom, deciding to wait a few minutes.
As Wu Di was approaching the food and beverage department, his phone rang. He looked down to see it was Xu Zhuo, which made him frown. What was he up to? Wu Di wondered, bemused. Why call now when he was about to arrive? Then he thought, perhaps there was something important Xu Zhuo wanted to discuss. Wu Di answered the call: “Hello?”
While on the phone, Wu Di gestured for Lv Mengmeng to take Wang Chufan and the others inside first. He moved away from the crowd to a quiet spot: “What’s going on?”
“Well… Wu Di, I’ve been thinking, and there’s something I need to discuss with you,” Xu Zhuo said.
“What is it? Does it need to be discussed right now? Is it that urgent?”
“Yes, it’s about Shao Han.”
“What about Shao Han? What happened?”
“I’m telling you, don’t jump to conclusions. I felt that Wang Chufan meant no good towards Shao Han at the cocktail party,” Xu Zhuo explained.
Wu Di furrowed his brow even tighter upon hearing the words: “What do you mean?” Although he had a rough idea of what Xu Zhuo meant, he still pressed for clarification.
“Anyway, Wang Chufan likes Shao Han. Just be careful.”
“Okay.” Wu Di nodded solemnly, not in the best of moods, “So, he came visiting all of a sudden because he’s after my woman?” A fire surged in Wu Di’s chest.
“Wu Di.” Shao Han called out to him from behind.
Turning around at the sound, Wu Di saw Shao Han. Whenever he saw her, his heart would warm, and a smile would naturally appear. However, this time, the burgeoning warmth seemed to be enveloped by a chill.
“Oh.” Wu Di responded.
“What are you doing here?” Shao Han walked over to Wu Di and naturally took his arm, “Does your leg feel alright?” She asked, looking down at his leg.
“It’s fine.” Wu Di watched Shao Han, pondering Xu Zhuo’s words, wondering why she hadn’t mentioned anything Wang Chufan had said to her. Why could Xu Zhuo see something was off, yet she hadn’t mentioned a word?
Shao Han was so focused on watching Wu Di’s leg movements that she completely missed the expression on his face.
“Shao Han.”
“Hmm?” Shao Han looked up at him, her eyes filled with questions, waiting for what Wu Di would say next.
“It’s nothing.” Wu Di thought about Xu Zhuo’s advice not to jump to conclusions.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, let’s go inside.”
“Oh, okay.” Shao Han gave him a warm smile, and the dark clouds in Wu Di’s mind were instantly dispersed by her sun-like smile, his face naturally breaking into the loving smile he reserved only for her.
