For Your Happiness - Chapter 33 - Celebrating Recovery
Shao Han stepped out of the bathroom in her pajamas, drying her hair and talking to Wu Di about the evening’s cocktail party. Wu Di listened with great interest.
“Oh, did Mr. Wang come?” Wu Di asked.
“Yes.” Shao Han didn’t quite understand what Wang Chufan’s actions towards her meant, but she felt it was best to keep her distance, so she was unsure how to explain this to Wu Di.
“Did he remember me?”
“Yes, haha, you stand out so much.” Shao Han gently kissed Wu Di on the face.
“What about you?” Wu Di asked with a mischievous grin.
“What about me? Besides, how would I know?” Shao Han didn’t want to continue this topic. “By the way, shouldn’t you go for a follow-up at the hospital? You’ve been home for a month now.”
“What? Are you tired of taking care of me already? What will you do when I’m old and can’t move? Are you going to kick me out?”
“How could I? But I still miss the lively Wu Di.”
“Haha.” Wu Di laughed. “Well, it’s time tomorrow. We’ll go for the check-up.”
“I’m so happy.” Shao Han smiled innocently.
The next morning, Shao Han took leave from work to accompany Wu Di to the hospital for his follow-up. Thanks to good care and Wu Di’s strong constitution, the doctor nodded in satisfaction.
“Good, you’re recovering well and quickly. You can start walking a bit more now. But take it slow, no rushing or strenuous exercise,” the doctor cautioned.
“Okay, doctor. Anything else we should be aware of?” Shao Han asked carefully.
“Just keep taking the medication, and you’ll be back to normal soon enough,” the doctor was pleased with Wu Di’s recovery.
Both Shao Han and Wu Di wore matching smiles.
“Thank you, doctor,” Wu Di said.
After picking up the medicine, they left the hospital cheerfully. To help Wu Di with walking, Shao Han even bought him a cane, to which Wu Di responded with a wry smile, “Do I really need this?”
“Yes,” Shao Han was firm.
“It’s so ugly, though.”
“Where is it ugly?”
“I’m so young, isn’t it weird to use a cane?”
“How is it weird?”
“I’m so handsome; those are for old folks. If people see me with this, they’ll think I’m actually a cripple.”
Shao Han burst into laughter after hearing this. “What? Does it tarnish your valorous image?”
“It really does,” Wu Di replied, clearly distressed. “For someone as dashing as me, how can I walk around with this? People who don’t know any better might think, ‘Oh, what a pity, such a talented man but he’s a cripple.’”
“Hahaha!” Shao Han couldn’t stop laughing at Wu Di’s imitation of others’ comments.
“Are you still laughing? Do you want others to say: ‘Wow, this woman, she sticks by a disabled man, what a good woman she is.’ See, then you’d have to be praised, right?” Wu Di frowned, pretending to be angry.
“Mmm, it would make my love seem so grand,” Shao Han said, lifting her chin proudly, smiling, and shaking her head.
“Wow, wicked woman.” Wu Di found her demeanor both irritating and amusing.
“Haha, I’m so happy to hear the doctor say you are recovering well today,” Shao Han said, calming down and speaking earnestly.
“Me too. I was so nervous when the doctor was talking.”
“Nervous?”
“Yeah, afraid he’d say something was wrong. I’m quite a coward,” Wu Di admitted, only showing his vulnerable side in front of Shao Han. Outside, he always appeared tough.
Hearing this, Shao Han took Wu Di’s hand more tightly. “It’s okay now.”
“Mmm.” Wu Di looked at Shao Han, and they locked eyes for a few seconds. “Alright, let’s go have something delicious to celebrate. You haven’t eaten out in a long time. What would you like?”
“I’d like to eat you,” Wu Di teased Shao Han first. “Hehe, anything is fine, just not with this.” He quickly made a sad face.
“A wheelchair?”
“Even worse,” Wu Di strongly objected.
“So, what should we do?” Shao Han asked, furrowing her brow in concern.
“Just help me walk.”
“You’re so heavy! Your legs just healed; you shouldn’t strain them.”
“It’ll be fine, just help me,” Wu Di said with a cheeky smile.
“Jerk,” Shao Han glanced at him sideways.
“What should we eat? How about going for some bone broth?” Shao Han thought every day about how to nourish Wu Di’s body.
“Ah? Spare me, please. We’ve been eating that for a month. Let’s try something different,” Wu Di was going stir-crazy at home.
“Oh, then… how about seafood?”
“Sure, sure, I’d love that.”
“Alright, then let’s go for seafood.” Shao Han turned the car around and headed towards the seafood restaurant.
Having been cooped up at home for so long, Wu Di salivated at the sight of all the delicious food. Shao Han, seeing this, said somewhat annoyed, “It’s as if I’ve been torturing you at home.”
“Haha, not at all, I just wanted a change of taste,” Wu Di said while enjoying the seafood noodles.
“Is it really that delicious? Next time, I’ll learn how to make it for you.” Shao Han also liked seafood noodles.
They both enjoyed shellfish as well, and fortunately, seafood wasn’t very filling. Wu Di quickly swept through a whole table of dishes. Shao Han truly felt as if she had been neglecting Wu Di, especially these days when his diet had been bland for the sake of healing his injuries, always eating foods that were meant to be nourishing. It was too monotonous, and watching him eat, she couldn’t help but laugh beside him.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Wu Di widened his eyes at Shao Han. “What? Do I have something on my face?”
“No, it’s just that you look so cute,” Shao Han said with a smile.
“Cute?” Wu Di, having finished a crab, responded, “Are you making fun of me?”
“Not at all. I think it’s only in front of me that you can be like this, playful like a child, but sometimes you are mature and dependable, someone I can rely on,” Shao Han smiled as she spoke to Wu Di.
“Of course, I can be the real me in front of you,” Wu Di laughed goofily.
“Yes, I like you this way. I don’t like it when you try to act tough and handle everything on your own in front of me.”
“Hehe.”
After a hearty dinner, Shao Han helped Wu Di out of the restaurant. Wu Di’s leg was much better, though he still struggled with strength due to not having walked for a long time. Occasionally, his injured leg would misjudge a step, causing him to stumble. To prevent a fall, he leaned one arm on Shao Han’s shoulder, and to an onlooker, it might seem he was just unsteady from drinking.
“Ah, it feels so good to get some fresh air,” Wu Di exclaimed.
“How about taking you for a drive?” Shao Han suggested.
“Sure, hehe, I used to be the one driving, but today I get to enjoy it.”
“Great.” Shao Han’s smile was radiant.
“My little woman has suddenly become a big woman.”
“I don’t want to be a big woman. Once you’re better, I’ll go back to being your little woman. I like depending on you.”
“Don’t you feel sorry for me?”
“Of course, but can I pamper you in other ways?” Shao Han cooed.
“You… you’re tempting me.”
“Ah? No way.” Shao Han flashed a mischievous smile, making Wu Di feel incredibly sweet inside.
“Shao Han.”
“Hmm?”
“Do you love me?”
“Hehe.” Shao Han turned to look at Wu Di. “What do you think?”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
“Hehe, I’m so happy.”
The two laughed together, watching the cars whiz by, Wu Di placed his hand over Shao Han’s as they listened to the melodious music on the radio, basking in their happiness. Silently, they admired the twinkling lights of Che River and the stunning neon lights between the buildings.
“Wow, this is so comfortable,” Wu Di remarked. “No wonder you never wanted to drive.”
“I never liked driving. Dad insisted I learn.”
“You do know how to enjoy yourself.”
“I’m just cautious, really. I get scared when I see fast-moving cars nearby, or big trucks. I’m afraid they’ll crush me.”
“Hehe, you have me now, no need to be scared.”
“Okay.”
“Shall we go home now?” Shao Han asked Wu Di, unsure if the big kid had had enough fun.
“Alright, let’s go home.”
“Okay, playtime is over, let’s head home,” Shao Han said with a laugh.
“Ah, I knew you just wanted to lock me up.” Wu Di chuckled inwardly, recalling his own initial desire to keep Shao Han all to himself.
“Yeah, right, to become my personal slave.”
“You mean you want me to be your… sex slave.”
“Hey… you big pervert, you think I’m like you?” Shao Han protested, reaching out to hit him.
“Careful, careful, no fooling around while driving,” Wu Di said with a laugh, blocking Shao Han’s playful swats.
