For Your Happiness - Chapter 30 - Moved
When Shao Han woke up in the morning, she saw a note on the bedside table. Curiously, she picked it up and saw that it was written by Wu Di:
“Dear, there’s a little surprise for you on my computer. Take a look after you wake up.”
Shao Han turned and looked at the sleeping Wu Di, smiling. She wondered what kind of strange idea Wu Di had this time. She smiled and went to get his laptop, which was still on. There was a simple screen with a single sentence in English: DO YOU LOVE ME?
What is this guy up to? Is it this simple? And a surprise? Strangely, there were two option buttons below: YES NO.
Hmph, isn’t this obvious? Who would I love if not you? What is he up to? The more Shao Han thought about it, the stranger it seemed. What on earth did he want her to see? Shao Han turned her head to look at the man next to her, who was like a big boy. She softly muttered, “You big rascal.”
I bet he wants me to click YES, but I’ll click NO instead and see what happens.
With a naughty thought, Shao Han moved the mouse to click NO. Just as the mouse hovered over NO, it suddenly moved away. Shao Han’s mouth dropped open in surprise. What was going on? She tried to click again, but it moved away again. No matter how many times she tried, the NO kept running away as if it had legs. Shao Han became stubborn and kept trying to click it, foolishly persistent.
Suddenly, she felt the bed shaking. Wu Di had woken up and couldn’t help laughing when he saw her battling with the NO button. His shaking body made the motion more pronounced. Shao Han was focused, frowning, trying to click NO. She turned to Wu Di, who was laughing uncontrollably.
“Hey, why can’t I click it?” Shao Han glared at him and slapped Wu Di lightly.
“You…” Wu Di laughed harder. He found Shao Han’s stubbornness in trying to click the elusive NO so amusing.
“What’s going on?” Shao Han was still trying to figure it out, extremely puzzled.
“I designed it that way on purpose, so you can’t click NO. Hmph, no chance.” Wu Di finally explained seriously after laughing enough.
“Huh? How did you design it?”
“I can write some small programs too, you know.”
“Hehe,” Shao Han glanced at him, resigned to clicking the YES button. The screen then displayed a huge heart and a message:
“Dear:
It’s really embarrassing to make such a confession. From the moment we met until now, we’ve gone through so much. Besides the simplest ‘I love you,’ I’ve never said any confessional words to you because I’ve always found them quite cheesy and hard to say. Also, my pride rarely allows me to express my feelings to a woman, and I’ve always feared that you might not love me.
But spending all this time at home recently has made me remember our past and all the experiences we’ve shared, suddenly making me realize how important you are to me.
It feels like I came to this world to love you, to hold you tightly in my arms, to protect you. We met so I could learn to love you and to accept your love. I came to your side because this is the only place I belong; there is nowhere else I would rather be.
Without you, I’d be lost. Like a soul without a direction, a lone goose flying aimlessly. I am everything, yet I am nothing. My love, as I gaze at you, marveling at your ethereal beauty, I find it hard to tear my eyes away. I am absolutely certain in my heart that we will fly together, side by side, forever and ever.
Is that how all lovers feel? In those unbearable nights, I used alcohol to numb myself until I was utterly wasted. Even though you are very charming, it is something else about you that attracts me. You are so smart; I felt that the first night we made love. And you are confident, even though you often tell me you are not. You are always full of confidence about the things you decide to do with your life; to me, those are the truly important qualities. Without them, beauty means nothing.
Opportunities to reflect on our relationship at home are rare. The happiness I feel now sometimes makes me think I’m dreaming. Darling, tell me, is this just a dream? Or am I really holding you? Do you love me?
Forever yours, Wu Di”
Shao Han read the words with a smile, tears of happiness involuntarily welling up in her eyes. She turned to look at Wu Di, who seemed a bit shy as he watched her read the message. The usual playful and talkative Wu Di was nowhere to be seen.
Their eyes met, filled with deep affection. Shao Han put down the laptop and turned to embrace Wu Di tightly, her face pressed against his.
“Silly, how could I not love you? Do I need to say it thousands or millions of times?”
“I just suddenly felt like doing this for you yesterday. I don’t even know why,” Wu Di said, holding her close, feeling happy and content.
Shao Han suddenly opened her mouth and bit down on Wu Di’s shoulder.
“Ah,” Wu Di yelped softly, but it didn’t hurt much as Shao Han didn’t use much force.
“Does it hurt?”
“Just a little bit.”
“Is this a dream?”
“No,” Wu Di laughed, hugging Shao Han even tighter. Shao Han laughed too. Sometimes, happiness could bring a sweet pain, an indistinct but heartfelt feeling.
“Oh, by the way,” Shao Han released her tight hold on him. “Can you tell me what to expect and what to do at tonight’s cocktail party?” She wanted to be well-prepared and not make a fool of herself.
“Alright, let me explain. First, the attendees will be all the bosses and important people from the hotel branches across the country, as well as some headquarters executives and notable personalities. This is, of course, to boost the hotel’s reputation. There will also be people from related industries, so lots of famous individuals. Generally, they wouldn’t notice us, so you need to stand out to be remembered.”
“Huh? Really?”
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m a bit scared.” Shao Han felt the weight of the responsibility and feared embarrassing Wu Di.
“What are you afraid of?”
“Afraid of embarrassing you.”
“No way, you’re so amazing and beautiful. I’m the one who should be scared.”
“What are you afraid of?”
“Afraid someone might steal you away.”
“You’re so annoying,” Shao Han lightly slapped his shoulder.
“Don’t worry. If you don’t go, I’ll miss the opportunity too with my leg in this condition. You going is our best hope.”
“Okay.” Shao Han wondered if she could handle it well.
“How are you and Xu Zhuo getting there?” Wu Di asked.
“Oh, he’s picking me up at five in the evening.”
“Alright, good.”
“Today, I need to dress up, do my hair, and put on some makeup. You know me, I can’t do it myself, so I’ll go to a beauty salon and let them help.”
“Don’t come back looking like a monster.”
“Of course not,” Shao Han replied, glancing at the wedding photo on their bedside table. “Look, isn’t it beautiful?”
“Yeah, you’re even more beautiful without makeup. I like the natural look.”
“Wow, comparing me to a celebrity, I don’t fall short, right?” Shao Han grinned mischievously.
“Haha, but still, not as beautiful as me.”
“Humph, you narcissist,” Shao Han said, snuggling into Wu Di’s arms. “Wu Di.”
“Hmm?”
“Hehe, nothing, I just wanted to call you.”
Wu Di laughed and gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead.
After getting up, Shao Han headed to the beauty salon. She treated herself to a facial and got her hair styled into big, loose curls that cascaded over her shoulders. The makeup artist asked, “Miss Shao, what kind of makeup look would you like?”
“Oh, not too heavy, just something natural,” Shao Han said with a smile.
“What kind of event are you attending?”
“A cocktail party.”
“Then it should be a bit more dramatic.”
“Uh… no, that’s alright. I’d prefer to keep it natural.”
“Alright then.” The makeup artist began carefully applying makeup to Shao Han’s face. Shao Han rarely wore makeup like this and always felt that it looked unnatural on her. Even smiling felt uncomfortable, especially with the mascara, which made her eyes feel strange.
Under the skillful hands of the makeup artist, Shao Han’s refined look emerged. She looked elegant and classy. Shao Han had the aura of a noblewoman, perfectly suited to a sophisticated appearance. The makeup, paired with her voluminous curls, gave her an ethereal look. Shao Han smiled in satisfaction at her reflection. It wasn’t too ostentatious or too plain, just the right balance.
She thanked the makeup artist and headed home.
When Wu Di saw her, he said, “So beautiful!”
“Really?”
“Absolutely.” Wu Di smiled. “My wife looks gorgeous. It’s a shame others will be the ones to see you tonight.”
“Haha.”
Shao Han then changed into a little black cocktail dress and matched it with a simple, round pearl necklace.
“How do I look?” Shao Han asked Wu Di.
“Absolutely stunning. There will be so many men looking at you tonight.”
“I won’t let you down.”
“Of course not, you’re so beautiful.”
“No, I mean I won’t let anyone think I’m trying to seduce other men.”
Wu Di chuckled. “Yeah, we don’t want people thinking badly of us.”
“Absolutely. Our love story is so beautiful; we can’t let anyone ruin it.”
“It’s almost time. Where’s Xu Zhuo?” Wu Di checked his watch, and just then, Shao Han’s phone rang.
“Oh, it’s Xu Zhuo. He must be here.” Shao Han answered the phone. “Hello? Oh, okay, I’ll be right down.”
“I’m off then.” Shao Han gave Wu Di a light kiss before heading out.
“Alright,” Wu Di said, his eyes filled with love as he watched his wife leave.
When Shao Han appeared in front of Xu Zhuo downstairs, he whistled. “Wow, you look stunning.”
Xu Zhuo, just over thirty, was a bit of a playboy. He had been working with Wu Di for a long time, and they used to hang out together during their younger years. At a certain age, Wu Di decided he couldn’t waste his life anymore and, with some friends, started the current hotel. His friends thought his idea was good and followed his lead, doing whatever he proposed.
Xu Zhuo knew about Wu Di’s many romantic escapades but was surprised that out of all those women, Wu Di chose the relatively unknown Shao Han. Xu Zhuo was curious-there were many beautiful women; what made Shao Han so special that she could capture Wu Di’s heart?
Seeing her today, she did have a certain charm and a striking figure. Wu Di truly had an eye for women.
Shao Han felt shy under Xu Zhuo’s gaze. She didn’t dare look up and walked towards his car with her head down. “Let’s go.”
“Wu Di sure knows how to pick ’em,” Xu Zhuo said casually, his words unfiltered.
“Huh?” Shao Han pretended not to understand.
“Haha, it’s great having you as my date tonight.”
“Haha. Well, I’m representing Wu Di.”
Xu Zhuo smiled and didn’t say anything more. He buckled his seatbelt and drove towards the hotel where the cocktail party was being held.
