For Your Happiness - Chapter 27 - Wu Di is Injured
Xiao Luo carefully said, “He fell and got injured on the way down the mountain.”
“Where is he hurt?” Shao Han’s heart ached with a real pain, the kind that makes you feel as if your heart is breaking.
“His leg. We took him to the hospital for an X-ray.”
Shao Han was completely stunned. The fact that he was already admitted to the hospital indicated how serious it was. Tears started streaming down her face.
“How did this happen? Where is he now?”
“He’s still getting the X-ray. Don’t worry too much, we’ll update you once we get the results.”
“How can I not worry? I need to go right now.”
“Sister-in-law, please stay calm. It’s not that serious. Wait for my call.”
“Alright.” Shao Han turned and went back to the living room. She couldn’t go to work; she had to stay home and wait for Xiao Luo’s call. She picked up the home phone and called Xiao Zhang, telling her that she wouldn’t be coming to work today. She asked her to call the home phone for any urgent matters, not the mobile. At this point, her mobile was the emergency line for Xiao Luo, and she couldn’t afford any interruptions.
The phone rang again; it was Xiao Luo.
“Hello, Xiao Luo, do we have the results?”
“It’s a fracture,” Xiao Luo said nervously.
“Fracture?” Shao Han cried out. Xiao Luo was worried she might have made a mistake in telling her, but Wu Di’s injury had to be communicated to his family.
“The doctor said he can be discharged and return to Shanghai after treatment.”
“I’m coming right now. Wait for me; I’ll pick you up.”
“Huh? Let me ask General Manager Wu first.”
“No need to ask. If you do, he’ll definitely try to stop me from coming.”
“No, General Manager Wu will kill me. Please follow his orders. We’ll take good care of him; please don’t worry.”
Shao Han’s heart was racing with anxiety. How could she not be worried?
“Where is Wu Di? I need to talk to him.” Shao Han needed to hear his voice at that moment.
“Hold on.” Xiao Luo took the phone and walked into the ward. “General Manager Wu, I called Shao Han…”
“Huh? Who told you to call her?” Wu Di was furious.
“I… thought you should inform your family about such a big issue.” Xiao Luo knew Wu Di would be angry.
“You’re just making her worry!” Wu Di’s eyes were blazing with anger.
Shao Han could hear Wu Di’s angry shout on the other end. She knew he was scolding Xiao Luo, but hearing his strong voice gave her some comfort.
“Wu Di, Wu Di…” Shao Han called out through the phone.
Xiao Luo handed the phone to Wu Di.
“Hello.”
“Wu Di, how are you? What exactly happened? I’m worried sick. Where are you? I’m going to buy a ticket and come over right now,” Shao Han said in one breath.
“Calm down first, it’s not that serious.”
“It’s a fracture and you say it’s not serious? Don’t lie to me.” Shao Han’s tears poured down.
“It’s okay, you don’t need to come. I’ll be back in a couple of days.”
“A couple of days? How am I supposed to get through these two days?”
“Xiao Luo exaggerated, I’m fine.”
“Then send me a picture of you right now. I want to see what you look like.”
“Uh… what?” Wu Di was at a loss for words.
“Aren’t you afraid? Or is it really serious and you don’t want me to see? I don’t care, just tell me where you are and I’ll come get you.”
“Shao Han, listen to me. The medical facilities here are poor. I’ll return to Shanghai soon and get treatment there. I’ll talk to the doctor and if everything is okay, I’ll head back. Please stay home and wait for me.” Wu Di tried to comfort Shao Han, imagining her anxious and uneasy state.
“How can I be at ease? I can’t even sit still for a minute,” Shao Han said through her sobs.
“Then ease my mind. Don’t make me worry about you. I’m already miserable enough; do you want me to be even more anxious?”
“No, but…”
“No buts. Just stay at home and wait for me. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
“Can you? Will the doctor allow it? What if something goes wrong on the way?”
“It’s not that serious. Just promise me you won’t abandon me when you see me.”
“Oh, you’re so annoying. How can you joke at a time like this?”
“Then smile for me. If you smile, I won’t hurt as much.” Wu Di couldn’t bear to see Shao Han so distraught and tried to make her laugh.
“I can’t smile. Just ask the doctor if it’s okay for you to travel back, and then tell me.”
“Okay.”
Shao Han couldn’t see Wu Di and didn’t know how severe his fall was. She also forgot to ask which part of his body was injured. After hanging up, she realized she had many unanswered questions. She wanted to call him back but was afraid he might be talking to the doctor about his condition. Feeling restless in her room, she suddenly thought to search for related information on her laptop.
“Shao Han, the doctor said that after putting on the cast, I can return to Shanghai. We’ll head back tomorrow, so don’t worry,” Wu Di quickly informed Shao Han after speaking with the doctor. He didn’t want her to come by herself; she always seemed like someone who needed to be taken care of, and he didn’t want her traveling alone.
“Okay, I’ll wait for you at home. No, we’ll go straight to the hospital. I’ll be there when you’re about to arrive.”
“Alright, let’s see what time we get back. You… will you still want me?”
“Yes, you were so careless, didn’t take care of yourself, and got injured.” Shao Han felt a mix of anger and worry.
But to Wu Di, her words were comforting. It made him feel happy and loved to hear her so worried about him.
“Really? Because I became a cripple, you won’t want me anymore? Do you only love my appearance?” Wu Di teased Shao Han on purpose.
“You… you…” Shao Han was at a loss for words and didn’t know how to retort. How could he think she was so superficial? To her, his existence was as important as her own life. Even if he had disfigured himself, she would still love him. It was a feeling from the heart, not something that could be judged by appearance.
“Alright, I’m just teasing you. Stay put at home, I’ll be more worried if you go out.”
“Okay, but make sure Xiao Luo and the others drive slowly,” Shao Han reminded him.
“Got it.” Wu Di’s leg hurt badly, but he endured the pain and tried to keep his voice light so Shao Han wouldn’t notice and get worried.
After hanging up, Wu Di winced in pain. Xiao Luo and Xiao Lu, who were by his side, were moved by what they witnessed.
“General Manager Wu, you’re really good to Shao Han,” Xiao Luo said emotionally.
“Hehe, of course, women are meant to be cherished.” Wu Di shifted slightly, looking at his leg that was wrapped up like a mummy. He felt a bit worried, hoping it wasn’t too serious. He didn’t want any long-term consequences.
“She gave up so much for me. Hehe, I love her very much.” Wu Di seemed to be talking to himself, his face full of sweetness as he spoke.
“If one can truly find such a loving partner in a lifetime, it’s the greatest happiness,” Xiao Luo said thoughtfully. “But the reality today is that people are too practical. Not everyone can meet the right person at the right time. If you miss the timing, even if you meet again, that person might no longer be yours.”
“Yeah, that’s why I cherish her so much,” Wu Di said, reflecting on his own relationship.
“Ah, not everyone is as lucky as General Manager Wu. Meeting the right person at the right time, looking good, having a decent family background, and being mutually understanding and compatible-it’s a rare combination, like one in thousands or even tens of thousands,” Xiao Lu remarked.
Indeed, in today’s society, many marriages in China are driven by conditions. Marriage, such a simple word, is complicated by societal pressures. There’s a joke that today’s high property prices are driven up by mothers-in-law, demanding houses for their daughters. Without a house, marriage is out of the question. For many striving men, finding a wife before they achieve success seems extremely difficult. Various troubles and conflicts have made society somewhat skewed.
Wu Di and Shao Han were a coincidence within coincidences. Their accidental encounter happened within a shared economic background, which meant fewer concerns. They were both good-looking, had similar personalities, and connected easily. Such a collision of circumstances is almost unimaginable, so they cherished each other and loved each other deeply.
“Yeah, the feeling of love is wonderful, but the pain is real. That kind of suffering is truly uncomfortable,” Wu Di reminisced about their past hardships, shaking his head.
“At least the hard times are over now.”
“Yeah. By the way, let’s drive back tomorrow. I’ll sit in the back, and you two can take turns driving. It’ll be a bit tiring, but we’ll manage.” Wu Di wanted to return to Shanghai as soon as possible. First, he wanted to get his leg thoroughly checked at a Shanghai hospital to avoid delaying treatment. Second, he was worried about Shao Han overthinking things, and it would be better to have her by his side where he could keep an eye on her.
“Fortunately, we’ve finished the work,” Wu Di sighed.
The doctor carefully treated Wu Di’s injury and then prescribed some medication. Early the next morning, the three of them hit the road. Luckily, they had an SUV, so the back seat had plenty of space. Wu Di was able to stretch out his leg and recline in the back seat.
“Shao Han, we’re on our way back,” Wu Di messaged his wife on QQ.
“Oh, how are you? Does it still hurt? Please be careful and don’t rush. Tell them to drive slowly,” Shao Han reminded him.
“I’m fine. We’ll be there in about five hours.”
“Should we go directly to the hospital?”
“Alright.”
“My heart aches for you.”
“Hehe, I was really afraid you wouldn’t want me anymore. What if I end up needing crutches?”
“Stop saying such things.”
“That would be tragic. You’d have a crippled husband.”
“Say that again and I’ll ignore you.”
“Now I’m really worried,” Wu Di admitted. “What if it’s serious? I still need to make you happy for the rest of your life.”
“Well, at least then you wouldn’t run around, and I’d have you all to myself every day.”
“Shao Han, I’m a little scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“What if there are lasting aftereffects?” Wu Di’s voice softened, seeking comfort from Shao Han.
“There won’t be. If it were that serious, the doctor wouldn’t have let you go so easily. Trust me, you’ll be fine,” Shao Han reassured him.
“Okay. I miss you, honey.”
“I miss you too.”
The two chatted lovingly and intimately, and time passed without them realizing it. They never seemed to run out of things to say and found it hard to part.
“General Manager Wu, we’re almost in Shanghai. Should we go straight to the hospital?” Xiao Luo asked.
“Yes, head straight there.”
“Shao Han, we’re almost there. We’re going directly to Ruijin Hospital,” Wu Di informed her.
“Okay, I’m heading over now.” Shao Han left her laptop, grabbed her wallet and various medical cards, and drove towards Ruijin Hospital.
