Exorcist Master - Chapter 83 - Sacred Mountain in Myanmar (Part XXXVII)
Chen Shaoxian collected his thoughts, casually pushing aside Thomas, who had come over to ask questions. Thomas complained about Chen Shaoxian’s lack of respect for the elderly and care for the young, but Chen Shaoxian ignored him and quickly conferred with Song Yumu. They agreed that escaping the danger zone was the most important task at hand.
Before setting off, Chen Shaoxian checked on Xiao Zhuang and then glanced at Elena. Both seemed fine except for being unconscious. Chen Shaoxian had been worried about Xiao Zhuang’s safety all along, and seeing Xiao Zhuang unharmed, he felt much more secure. As for Elena, he merely glanced at her out of convenience.
Chen Shaoxian and Song Yumu led the way, with the group following closely behind. Although they had not yet exited the cavern, there was a sense of relief among them, having just escaped immediate danger.
They chatted as they walked. Initially, Song Yumu wanted everyone to conserve their energy and stay silent, but Chen Shaoxian suggested that under such high pressure, a little conversation might help relieve stress. Song Yumu agreed with his reasoning.
Much of the conversation centered around Chen Shaoxian, who seemed like a walking myth, piquing everyone’s curiosity. Later, the topics shifted to relationships and family.
This topic particularly interested Thomas, especially whether Chen Shaoxian had a girlfriend. Thomas appeared so enthusiastic that it seemed he might declare his love if Chen Shaoxian were single. When he found out that Chen Shaoxian did have a girlfriend, Thomas looked visibly disappointed.
Thomas’s reaction made Chen Shaoxian uncomfortable, thinking, “Could he really be interested in that way?” With this thought, he spat on the ground and distanced himself from Thomas.
Despite their exhaustion, the laughter and conversation lifted their spirits, bringing some life back to their faces.
Suddenly, Song Yumu pulled Chen Shaoxian aside and asked, “Shaoxian, do you hear that?”
Everyone stopped laughing, and the group fell silent, straining their ears. Suddenly, their expressions lightened with joy.
“It’s the sound of wind. Thank God for His blessing,” Thomas cheered.
Indeed, it was the sound of wind, along with the rustling of leaves.
The group quickened their pace, pressing forward eagerly. After making a small turn, a gentle breeze brushed their faces, carrying the fresh scent of trees.
It felt particularly refreshing, and the breeze swept away their exhaustion. After walking a short distance further, they saw sunlight streaming in.
Everyone involuntarily cheered and almost ran towards the exit. Suddenly, the view brightened as the morning sunlight filtered through the leaves above, shining on them. It was blinding, but the warmth reassured everyone that they had made it out alive.
Chen Shaoxian took deep breaths of fresh air, then poured the last bit of water from his canteen onto his face. The cool breeze hit his skin, providing an indescribable sense of relief.
But then, the sound of crying reached their ears. Turning around, Chen Shaoxian saw Thomas kneeling on the ground, facing the cavern’s exit, sobbing loudly. He was muttering continuously and occasionally slapped his own face.
Chen Shaoxian’s English was poor. Apart from “Hello” and “Bye,” his vocabulary mostly consisted of phrases like “Come, Baby” from American action movies. However, he recognized a few names in Thomas’s words, including Howard.
Thomas seemed exhausted and sat down heavily, but his tears didn’t stop. From behind, if he had been slapping his thighs, he would have resembled a character from a TV show, scolding the streets like a furious woman. In any other situation, it might have been humorous.
But no one present felt like laughing. They all felt a pang of emotion in their chests, understanding Thomas’s grief. If Chen Shaoxian and the others had arrived a few days later, Thomas might not have been the only one crying-or perhaps, there would have been no one left to cry.
Truly sorrowful individuals are beyond mockery, for their pain is a heart-wrenching agony.
Chen Shaoxian walked over to Thomas without saying anything, simply patting him on the shoulder. Chen Shaoxian didn’t know what to say, so this was his way of offering comfort.
Song Yumu, being older and more experienced, crouched down beside him and said, “You’re alive.”
Thomas’s voice was beginning to tremble from crying. He looked at the two of them with gratitude, nodded, and said, “Thank you,” in Chinese. He stood up shakily, moved to Elena’s side, and gently said, “We’re alive,” looking at her with a caring expression.
Song Yumu called Wang Quanpeng to keep an eye on Thomas, considering his age and the stress they had just escaped from. He didn’t want anything else to happen to Thomas now. He then asked Zhang Zeshan to check if their communicator could reach home.
Strangely enough, the long-lost signal returned just as they stepped out of the cavern. After contacting their superiors, Song Yumu first informed his family that they were safe, and then gave a brief report on their situation. They arranged a rendezvous point, and the group began their journey home.
