Bai Yuxuan shook her head. “I never thought the day would come when you’d be so attached to a menu. Back in the day, picking food was like facing an executioner for you. All you ever said was, ‘Whatever,’ ‘Anything’s fine,’ or ‘How about we each get fried rice, then?'” While speaking, Bai Yuxuan gave a disdainful glance at Xu Wei.
“People change, don’t they? Back then, the only time you showed up at a restaurant at this hour was like a ghost rising from the grave!” Xu Wei pushed one of the two cups of hot water the waiter had poured toward the woman across from her before taking the other for herself.
Bai Yuxuan put down her phone, rested her chin on her crossed hands, and looked at Xu Wei. “Appearing like a ghost is still better than the way you shout like a butcher at a morning market!”
“You’re a lawyer, so stick to exploiting loopholes in the law, not in conversations. There’s karma for that kind of thing!” Xu Wei sipped the hot water from her cup.
“Oh? Feeling guilty now, are you? We practically grew up wearing the same pants. If karma ever does find us, the blessings and the curses will be shared equally, right? Doesn’t bother me!” Bai Yuxuan tilted her head and batted her eyes in an utterly provocative manner.
Xu Wei shuddered, a tone of disgust in her voice. “I never wore your pants, okay?”
“But you did wear my dress!” Bai Yuxuan shrugged with a smug expression that said, You can’t argue with me on this.
Xu Wei turned slightly to make way for the waiter bringing in dishes and tableware. She pouted. “And here you are first thing in the morning, digging up the past with me. Don’t expect a good reincarnation spot in your next life.”
“I don’t mind. A flower, a blade of grass-each is its own world. My heart is at ease!” Bai Yuxuan took a sip of her warm milk, then ladled some soup into her bowl.
“Well, well! Your spiritual enlightenment has reached another level!”
Bai Yuxuan sipped the soup, squinting as she gleefully shook her head. There was something sublime about being well-fed; she felt like she could take on ten tigers at this point.
After eating until she was half-full, Bai Yuxuan rubbed her stomach. “Full and content. I feel like my soul is floating away.”
Xu Wei tapped her chopsticks on the table, pointing at the soup, milk, and hot water. “Soup-fed, milk-fed, water-fed. Where exactly was the alcohol?”
Bai Yuxuan tilted her head, lazily propping it with one hand. “My heart is intoxicated. Anything I drink is wine!”
Xu Wei shivered, her shoulders shaking. “I feel like I don’t even know you anymore. You’re so nauseating. Is this how you and Lin Feng spend your days at home? Playing the zither, chess, writing, painting, poetry, drinking, or arranging flowers? Immersing yourselves in some half-baked sense of ancient elegance? So… when are you heading back today to continue your literary moonlit chats, hmm?”
“It’s certainly not as flavorful as your daily life with Gu Yuan!” Bai Yuxuan set down her soup bowl, noting that today’s soup seemed tastier than yesterday’s. Perhaps it was because she was hungrier.
“Here we go again! What a pity Ji Rou the professional and Song Wanwan the drama queen aren’t here to perform with you. Looks like you’re still indulging in your ancient style addiction!” Xu Wei said, biting into a pork rib.
“Are you a pig? I’ve put my bowl down twice already, and you’re still eating.” Bai Yuxuan glanced at her empty bowl, having put it down only to find herself drinking another bowl of soup.
“Am I eating alone here?” Xu Wei felt a bit aggrieved, insisting that being able to eat was a blessing.
“I’m not alone either!” Bai Yuxuan rolled her eyes, reminding Xu Wei that she was a bona fide pregnant woman.
Xu Wei smacked her lips, “I might be… carrying a foodie!” She continued her battle with the food, having skipped breakfast and feeling particularly ravenous.
“Just admit it, your true nature is a foodie, a little pig at heart.” Bai Yuxuan, waiting patiently, ladled another bowl of soup and drank it slowly.
Xu Wei waved a pork rib in front of Bai Yuxuan, “Have you ever seen kindred spirits killing each other? Have you seen a pig eating pork?”
“Sure, look at you!” Bai Yuxuan sipped her soup, picking out chicken shreds and mushrooms with her chopsticks and chewing them.
Xu Wei viciously bit into the rib, exhaling a breath of frustration, “Sitting at the same table eating pig feed, even if you’re not from the second brother’s family, you’re still a wild hoof from the extended family!”
Bai Yuxuan’s mouth twitched. Xu Wei’s usual finale was mutual destruction. If Ji Rou and Song Wanwan were here, they’d be out of luck. She shrugged, “Knowing you, this domesticated pig, is my honor!”
“Indeed, mixing with you, the wild tusked pig, brings me great comfort!” Xu Wei sneered, twitching her lips as she bit into a piece of chicken.
Suddenly, Bai Yuxuan’s phone rang loudly, “Ding-a-ling…” Xu Wei grimaced, “Since you got married, your taste has reversed. Is this ringtone the reincarnation march?”
“It’s clearly the resurrection anthem!” Bai Yuxuan checked her phone, her eyes lighting up, “Hey! Guess…” she held up her phone.
“Guess whose call it is? Boring!” Xu Wei glanced disdainfully at the woman across from her.
“Guess what day it is today!” Bai Yuxuan rolled her eyes and asked again.
Xu Wei twitched the corner of her mouth, brushing off the conversation with, “International Women’s Day!”
“Oh, please! Be serious!” Bai Yuxuan raised her chopsticks in a mock-threatening gesture before putting them down again.
“It’s November 26th today. No holidays, no festivities. Even overseas, it’s just an ordinary day. So, what’s this trend of commemorating random dates you’re trying to follow?” Xu Wei spoke in an indifferent tone.
“This date is really important!” Bai Yuxuan patiently reminded her, noticing her uncooperative expression.
Xu Wei’s lip twitched as she teased, “Important? Is it the anniversary of Emperor Qin uniting the six kingdoms(Emperor Qin, China’s first emperor)?”
“…” Bai Yuxuan held her breath, narrowing her eyes.
“No? Then it must be the day Dongfang Bubai unified the martial arts world?(Dongfang Bubai, a fictional character from the novel, known for unparalleled martial arts skills)”
“…” Bai Yuxuan’s face grew tense as she glared at Xu Wei, her eyes round with frustration.
“Still not it? Oh! How about the day Wu Zetian declared her rule over the Tang Dynasty?(Wu Zetian, China’s only female emperor, who ruled during the Tang Dynasty)”
“…” Bai Yuxuan gritted her teeth, a faint grinding sound escaping from between them.
“Okay, okay! I’ll stop joking around and be serious. Hmm… let me think. November 26th. Last year, the year before, the year before that, and the year before that… What could’ve happened on this day?” Xu Wei squinted her eyes, genuinely trying to recall anything notable about this date in past years. Suddenly, her eyes lit up. “Ah! Song Wanwan’s birthday!”
Bai Yuxuan finally exhaled the breath she’d been holding. “Good thing your IQ decided to make an appearance!” Otherwise, she might’ve had to summon King Li’s demon-suppressing tower to deal with this heartless troublemaker(King Li, or Li Jing, a mythological figure in Chinese legends).
“You actually set a reminder? How… dedicated!” Xu Wei had initially intended to tease her with “How over-the-top, how dramatic,” but after catching Bai Yuxuan’s expression, she immediately changed her tone. On this special day worth celebrating, perhaps a little more joy and a little less chaos would be a small contribution to world peace.
“So, are you proposing… to make a stir, rattle the neighbors, and pull off a series of surprises?” Xu Wei asked.
