- Chapter 199 - In the Harem, Even the Empress is a Pawn
Song Wanwan wore an expression of utter shock, her tone dripping with flattery, “Jiejie, you’re absolutely right. I think the culprit is… right in the Cold Palace, and… haha… closer than we think!”
Xu Wei glared towards the bathroom door, feeling both aggrieved and annoyed, then turned to Bai Yuxuan, “Master, you need to transform and take down these troublesome concubines, or we’ll really end up in the underworld sleeping on the floor. The blankets in the Cold Palace are scarce, and it’s easy to catch a cold down there.”
Ji Rou’s face was about to crack, “…”
This drama can’t go on!
Song Wanwan’s face was about to crack too, “…”
This script is impossible to follow!
Bai Yuxuan squinted her eyes, holding back a mouthful of blood in her throat. She first shot a sideways glance at Xu Wei, whose cold jokes had shattered the palace drama into pieces. She raised her hand and poked Xu Wei’s forehead with her fingertip, “Do you think I’m Superman, carrying red underwear wherever I go, ready to transform?”
Casting a sideways glance towards the bathroom, Bai Yuxuan gritted her teeth and pointed at the bathroom again, scolding Xu Wei, “These two idiots are clearly here looking for a scapegoat. How could you, supposedly a high-IQ social animal, dig such a deep pit for me right from the start? It’s a miracle I didn’t fall to my death, all thanks to my prayers and blessings. Amen.” She patted her chest as she spoke.
Talking about the Cold Palace, seriously! Her dream of being the leading lady in a rags-to-riches story was shattered!
She had been boasting about winning favor, and the next second Xu Wei dragged her into the Cold Palace, allowing Ji Rou, a professional in the circle, to exploit the opportunity, and coincidentally Song Wanwan, the drama queen, had sobered up!
Xu Wei might have unintentionally dug a pit earlier, but later they pushed a cart full of stones over, trying to bury her in it!
Xu Wei looked innocent, “Blame me then!” She closed the lid of the moisturizer, “Tomorrow I’ll watch harem dramas, next time I’ll definitely transform into the big BOSS… the Empress!”
“In the harem, even the Empress is a pawn. You want to be the big BOSS? I think you should… transform into the Emperor’s mother instead!” Bai Yuxuan tore off the face mask and got out of bed, refusing to continue the drama, even for money.
Xu Wei shrugged and spread her hands towards the two still unsatisfied ladies in the bathroom, “Next time we can try the domineering CEO script, I’m sure I’ll find a place to shine!”
Ji Rou coldly followed Song Wanwan back into the bathroom, almost expressing doubt about her acting skills through her actions! Or perhaps it was a blatant disdain for her acting!
Under the scrutiny of their eyes, Xu Wei furiously tore off her face mask, deciding that next time she’d just play herself!
At Fiora Restaurant, Gu Yuan and Lin Feng’s cheeks were slightly flushed from drinking, but their expressions showed no signs of drunkenness. The unexpected addition to their group was none other than Shen Shang, the CEO of Tianqi Company! Along with Jiang Xun, the four of them sat around a table, drinking and chatting merrily.
When Shen Shang returned home, he didn’t find Song Wanwan. Instead, he was greeted by a desk covered with melodramatic farewell poetry, exuding a mix of sorrow and drama. Confused, he furrowed his brows. After a moment of hesitation, he went to seek out Lan Jingtu, only to discover that Lan Jingtu had taken advantage of his wife being out of town to book himself into a hotel for a “business trip.” Naturally, he was unable to provide any useful information. However, the fact that Ji Rou wasn’t home either gave Shen Shang a hint of relief.
At the very least, he figured that Song Wanwan must’ve gone out for some group outing. She was likely safe, which was somewhat comforting. To piece things together, Shen Shang reached out to Jin Jiayu for Xu Wei’s husband, Gu Yuan’s, contact information. One thing led to another, and soon they were gathered together for a drinking session.
As for why he didn’t call Xu Wei directly-the answer was simple: he couldn’t reach her. It seemed as though all the missing women had collectively agreed to ignore his calls. Left with no choice, Shen Shang decided to start with Gu Yuan, knowing that Jin Jiayu would inevitably have Gu Yuan’s phone number.
Once gathered, the three married men vented their frustrations, keeping pace with any gripe session women might have. Meanwhile, Jiang Xun silently absorbed the wisdom of his elders, playing the role of an attentive listener-while also serving as their unofficial waiter, refilling drinks for them as they spoke.
Gu Yuan, holding his glass and smiling faintly, spoke freely. “These days, women… You can’t be too close, but you also can’t be too distant. Be too controlling, and it’s wrong; be too lax, and it’s still wrong. In summary… whatever you do, you’re just wrong!” Of course, he would never dare say any of this in front of Xu Wei.
Lin Feng nodded in agreement, his gaze fixed on Gu Yuan. “Exactly! Women have these ever-changing expectations for daily conversations. Your answers need to strike the perfect balance of depth and subtlety. And yet, while the questions remain the same, the answers must constantly evolve!” He gestured with his chopsticks at the dishes on the table as if illustrating his point. Take the simple phrase ‘I love you,’ for instance. When she asks, ‘Do you love me?’ and you reply with a straightforward ‘Yes,’ that might earn you some peace today-but tomorrow, it won’t cut it.
“Tomorrow, when she asks, ‘Do you love me?’ you’ll have to say something like, ‘Of course I do!’ or ‘I’ll love you for a lifetime!’ or even ‘I’ll love you beyond death!’ It’s an endless game!”
Shen Shang frowned slightly as Song Wanwan flashed through his mind. A bitter smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “Even raising a daughter isn’t this exhausting!”
Gu Yuan blinked in curiosity and asked, “Wait, you’ve raised a daughter?”
Lin Feng and Jiang Xun also turned their curious gazes toward Shen Shang. Caught off guard for a moment, Shen Shang quickly composed himself, pursed his lips, and replied calmly, “I was just speaking hypothetically!”
Jiang Xun shook his head slightly, showing some disapproval. “Then you’re underestimating the challenge. Raising a daughter is far harder than dealing with a wife. I have an older cousin who completely caved under the pressure.”
Gu Yuan let out a sigh and gently placed his glass back on the table. “Exactly! Honestly, when we get married, they should hand us a Marriage Survival Guide. Or maybe an equivalent to ‘The Thirty-Six Strategies of Love.’ At least that way, we’d know where our wives’ sensitive spots are for the day.”
Lin Feng raised an eyebrow and shrugged, wearing an air of foresight. “That’s why I report my whereabouts proactively. I don’t care where her temperamental ‘sensitive spot’ is today or if it moves somewhere else tomorrow. As long as she feels secure, I can live my life in peace.”
Shen Shang nodded, finding some merit in Lin Feng’s logic. “Speaking of which, why did they all suddenly decide to book a hotel together? Do you guys know anything?” Deep down, he felt that Song Wanwan must’ve played a significant role in this-or worse, she might even be the ringleader behind the whole affair.
Lin Feng let out a heavy sigh. “Isn’t it because your wife has been threatening to separate from you? She’s not only dragging you into it but even roping in the neighbors! You really need to get that under control.”
Shen Shang squinted, shooting Lin Feng a sharp glance. “Separate?”
Lin Feng nodded. “Did you offend your wife? I heard that the initial plan was to file for divorce. Somehow, after a lot of persuasion, it got downgraded to a separation.”
Shen Shang suddenly felt like a boulder had been dropped on his chest, his throat burning as if scorched by fire. What kind of madness was this? He turned to look at Gu Yuan for answers, but Gu Yuan shook his head helplessly. “I’m completely in the dark. All I know is my wife joined her girlfriends to book a hotel room-that’s it!” Xu Wei had shared next to nothing about her plans with him, giving him no choice but to piece things together on his own.
Lin Feng’s lips curled into a sly smirk, his tone practically oozing triumph. “You see, that’s the beauty of full transparency in marriage. Every little detail of my wife’s plans is reported to me. Isn’t that harmonious? Whatever issues we have, we talk them out clearly. And if words fail, well, I have a lifetime to ‘prove myself’ through actions!”
Gu Yuan couldn’t help but raise his thumb in admiration toward Lin Feng before turning back to Shen Shang. “So, tell us, why are you two going back and forth between divorce and separation? No wonder Xu Wei ran off to huddle with the girls right after work. Seems like the girlfriends’ circle is in full-blown crisis mode right now!”
