Xu Wei’s phone buzzed, prompting her to set down her chopsticks and pick it up. She saw a WeChat message from Gu Yuan, a subtle smile playing on her lips as she cast a sidelong glance at Bai Yuxuan. Noticing Bai Yuxuan’s slightly puzzled expression, Xu Wei returned her attention to her phone, typing a reply: “Are you planning to soak it in hot water or cold? Remember to add some goji berries, red dates, and jasmine; it makes it more delicious.”
Bai Yuxuan sensed that Xu Wei’s glance held some deeper meaning, and driven by curiosity, she leaned forward and asked, “A message from Gu Yuan?”
Xu Wei nodded, playfully blinking as she stroked her chin in mock surprise, “Wow! You guessed it spot on!”
With a calm demeanor, Bai Yuxuan held up her phone as if she were carrying the Olympic torch, complete with a picture on the screen. “My husband just reported in. He arrived at Fiora at 6:45, and he’s having red wine with Jiang Xun and Gu Yuan. It’s grape wine, a bit sweet, not easy to get drunk on. I even gave him special permission to have two glasses.” She flashed a peace sign with two fingers.
Her actions spoke volumes of her understated arrogance!
Xu Wei stared in disbelief, her mouth slightly agape, before swallowing hard. “You’re really keeping a tight leash on Lin Feng, huh? Does he have a life sentence or something? Even drinking requires permission? Does he need to report if he finds a penny on the ground?”
On second thought, she realized she had never really restricted Gu Yuan in any way!
But then again, Gu Yuan never seemed to do anything that required her to remind him to be restrained!
Bai Yuxuan raised a hand to lightly brush her eyebrow, her gesture exuding a smugness that came from deep within her bones. “It’s not about whether I control him or not. The point is… even if it’s just a penny, he willingly turns it over to the state.” That’s confidence for you!
“Oh!” Xu Wei’s mouth formed an ‘O’ shape, “You’re impressive!” She gave a thumbs up, deeply impressed.
Bai Yuxuan’s lips curved into a smile, her fingertip gently tapping the rim of her glass. “You can’t control a man too tightly, nor can you let him run wild. You have to let him enjoy the pride of being managed and always feel immensely proud in front of others. Your free-range style definitely won’t last.”
Did she let Gu Yuan run free?
No way!
Gu Yuan was naturally conscientious!
Xu Wei’s once-clear eyes gradually became veiled with a mist, as confusion poured over her. “But according to what you just said, keeping him too tightly isn’t good either!”
“Exactly, so just leash him and take him for a walk to keep things peaceful!” Bai Yuxuan took a sip of hot milk, picked up her chopsticks, and popped a piece of Mapo Tofu into her mouth, chewing contentedly.
“Such a blunt explanation… I might not quite grasp its essence!” Xu Wei said with a playful smile, twirling her chopsticks as she blinked at Bai Yuxuan.
“It’s all about three simple words: ‘spend time.’ Whatever’s in front of you and tethered securely won’t get lost-be it a person or a heart. Most of what’s ‘lost’ isn’t in front of someone, or the leash is too long, or it’s been pulled too tightly. ‘Taking them for a walk’ is all about finding the right balance,” Bai Yuxuan explained, all while helping herself to the assortment of dishes on the table.
Xu Wei scratched behind her ear thoughtfully and bit into a piece of pork ribs. “But isn’t a rope inherently not very sturdy?”
“Then use a chain! A big, no-nonsense chain,” Bai Yuxuan shot back, glaring daggers at Xu Wei. She felt as if black lines of frustration were forming straight across her forehead.
Wait, was the emphasis really on whether it’s a rope or how sturdy it is? That wasn’t the point at all!
She couldn’t help feeling that Xu Wei was deliberately missing the point-just to push her buttons and see her squirm.
Xu Wei shrugged and offered a sheepish smile. Using a chain? That sounded more like something a rough-and-tumble guy would do. She picked up her phone and saw Gu Yuan’s message. Gu Yuan: “Are you brewing tea or making soup? Feels like your ingredients don’t match. Are you sure you’re following a recipe designed for this?”
“Pfft!” Xu Wei laughed out loud at his playful tone, drawing a side-eye from Bai Yuxuan. Without missing a beat, she started typing her reply. Xu Wei: “Sigh! Why is it that other people’s key ingredients are like snow lotus flowers, but mine are more like dogtail grass? They can’t cure anything, they’re inedible, and they just ruined the whole pot of medicine. Seriously, comparison is the thief of joy!”
Over at Fiora Restaurant, Gu Yuan instinctively glanced at Lin Feng, frowned slightly, and quickly typed back, “If you’re set on brewing medicine, I’ll have to tell you the truth: the most important thing isn’t the key ingredient or the leftover dregs-it’s the medicine pot. And I’d much rather be the pot, brewing up your nectar of the gods.”
Xu Wei stroked her chin with one hand while her lips curled into an involuntary smile. But her eyes twinkled mischievously as she typed back, Xu Wei: “Nectar of the gods usually refers to fine wine, doesn’t it?”
Gu Yuan paused for a moment but immediately resumed typing. “Cooking medicine with fine wine makes its flavor last forever, its aroma linger longer-and, if it’s heavenly wine, even better! It’s what would tie this life and the next, forever and ever!”
Xu Wei responded: “This is why I love how you can talk complete nonsense with total confidence!”
Gu Yuan was puzzled as to why he was suddenly being compared to Lin Feng, and how Lin Feng was being likened to a snow lotus. He put down his phone slightly and looked at Lin Feng beside him, “Da Feng, be honest, what have you been up to?”
Lin Feng took a sip of red wine, feeling utterly confused, and while picking up some food, he turned to look at Gu Yuan, “I’m… eating!”
Gu Yuan tapped his phone as a hint, squinting at him. Lin Feng must have done something; otherwise, why would Xu Wei compare him to a snow lotus, especially in contrast to dogtail grass? The difference was not just vast, it was like comparing different species altogether. “What did you send to your wife?”
Lin Feng nodded slightly in understanding, “I sent her my location and a photo.” Why should he be nervous about sending something to his own wife? Besides, he wasn’t secretly plotting against Gu Yuan!
Gu Yuan blinked, shaking his head with a look of admiration, feeling utterly defeated. Jiang Xun coughed violently, almost spitting out the red wine in his throat, his voice trembling, “Cough… Da Feng! Are you… under surveillance?”
Lin Feng raised an eyebrow disdainfully, retorting coldly, “And do you have anyone to keep an eye on you?”
“Uh…” Jiang Xun was choked by his words, feeling a sore throat. Shouldn’t he be envying him for having no one to manage him? Why did it feel like he was being looked down upon instead?
So, he was actually despising him for being a lone wolf with no one to care for him!
Gu Yuan pursed his lips, raising a hand to point at Lin Feng with a look of disdain, “You don’t have to be so grandiose about it, do you?” Talking about being managed by his wife with such pride, so he himself was also against the topic of being managed by his wife.
“You wouldn’t understand this. After all, your partner has always been used to going solo. You’ll never experience the joy of being a pair.” Lin Feng picked up the wine glass beside him, sipping a small amount. The rich liquid leisurely slid over his tongue, warming his stomach, with a faint aroma lingering at the tip of his nose.
Gu Yuan exhaled a breath of frustration!
Jiang Xun suddenly felt balanced, looking at Gu Yuan, “At least I have an unmarried dad to share this dog food with, otherwise I’d be stuffed to death tonight.”
Gu Yuan glared at Jiang Xun, picking up his phone with the air of someone about to type out a three-thousand-word essay. Gu Yuan: ‘To chat with you, I’ve racked my brains. If it weren’t for me sensing a tiny bit of your thoughts, I’d be struck by a rainbow thunderbolt, charred on the outside and tender on the inside, with smoke curling up!’
