- Chapter 196 - Can't Find a Girl to Flirt With? Then Flirt with Your Best Friend's Husband
Although Gu Yuan knew her little tricks, he still played along voluntarily. “Who are you meeting?”
“Well… a lot of people!” Xu Wei blinked her eyes, her lips curling into a triumphant smile.
Gu Yuan’s lips twitched as his face twisted into an expression of complete helplessness mixed with a hint of exasperation. Then, as if he had guessed the answer, he nodded knowingly. “Oh! They’re all women, right?”
Apart from those life-and-death-close best friends of hers, hardly anyone could make her come out for a meeting. Even Yan Wu would probably find it hard to persuade this goddess to leave her throne.
Xu Wei raised an eyebrow and scoffed, “There are men, too.”
“You mean those who haven’t even hatched yet?” Gu Yuan wore a look that implied he already knew everything.
Xu Wei’s lips twitched, losing the enthusiasm to tease him. He was no fun at all-not the least bit cooperative. She realized that Gu Yuan’s intelligence seemed particularly sharp today. Or rather, he’d always been sharp; she just hadn’t paid attention. Now, with just a little focus, she’d discovered this pleasant surprise-he seemed to know her inside out. “If you’re going to be like this… we might not grow old together.”
“No problem. I’ll carry you on my back all the way till we’re old!” Gu Yuan grinned, the deep, dark pools of his eyes shimmering with radiant light.
Xu Wei puffed out her cheeks and tilted her lips sideways. “In that case, may I get out of the car now?”
“Are you guys getting a hotel room here?” Gu Yuan looked around and didn’t see any hotel signs nearby. The area seemed somewhat secluded, not like the kind of place you’d meet for shopping or dinner.
“Not here. I’m hailing a cab from here to get there.”
“Why not just let me drop you off?” Gu Yuan eagerly offered himself for the role of a free chauffeur.
“Wan said it has to be kept secret. You’re not allowed to know the location,” Xu Wei rejected him flatly.
“Why?” Gu Yuan’s expression turned wounded. He felt like her best friend was more important than he was. His heart brimmed with jealousy, the kind that could rival a flood.
“Why so many ‘whys’! Take the day off today-go hang out with your buddies, have a drink, flirt with girls, play some cards or something. Let’s meet up tomorrow!” Xu Wei brushed off his hand, opened the passenger door, and slowly got out of the car. Under Gu Yuan’s watchful gaze, she flagged down a taxi and left.
Gu Yuan’s lips curved slightly as he trailed the taxi at a leisurely pace. He followed it all the way to the Holiday Inn near the University of Finance and Economics. Only when he saw Xu Wei enter the hotel safe and sound did he turn his car around and leave. He decided to head to Fiora to meet Jiang Xun and kill the long night ahead.
On the way, he sent a message in the Wolf Den Chat Group, tagging everyone.
After arriving at Fiora, Gu Yuan exchanged a quick glance of acknowledgment with Jiang Xun before heading straight to his usual seat. Jiang Xun carried a glass and a bottle of red wine over in a leisurely manner. “How did your superior let you out today? You actually have time to pull an all-nighter over here with me.”
Gu Yuan watched as Jiang Xun poured the wine. Then, picking up the glass that had just been filled, he held it in his hand. “The superior said I have the day off. Told me to find you guys-my gang of troublemakers-to drink, flirt, play cards, and pass the time on my own.”
“Wow, such an open-minded superior! Please, clone me a dozen of them, and throw in an extra basket while you’re at it,” Jiang Xun said, taking a sip of his wine, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
“Do you want the superior or the open-mindedness?”
“I’ll take the open-mindedness.”
“Well, you’re dreaming. Having those two words in the same sentence has nothing to do with you. But separate them, and maybe you’ll have a shot at a miracle.” Gu Yuan downed the wine in his glass in one go.
Jiang Xun rolled his eyes. “What kind of brother are you to treat me like this?”
“I’m not treating you badly. This is called a critical hit,” Gu Yuan said smugly as he leaned back, crossing one leg over the other. He picked up the wine bottle, poured a small amount of red wine into his empty glass, and set the bottle back on the table, glancing lightly around the room.
“Keep it up, but what’s gotten into your wife for her to suddenly loosen the reins like this? Did the sun rise in the west today?” Jiang Xun teased.
“She’s out with her best friends. Staying out all night,” Gu Yuan replied, tilting his head and looking at Jiang Xun with mock pity, as if to say he’d been blatantly abandoned.
“I love wives who have a bunch of best friends like that. Men get their time to roam, women get their time to vent-it’s peaceful, harmonious, and they can grow old together. Perfect!” Jiang Xun said, his face full of admiration.
Before long, Lin Feng strolled in. It seemed like he had even snapped a picture of Fiora from the entrance. He walked toward them, still fiddling with his phone.
Gu Yuan caught sight of Lin Feng, the corner of his mouth curling upward knowingly. “What’s this? Your wife’s staying out all night, too?”
Lin Feng shrugged and took the seat next to him. “Looks like the two of us are in the same boat. Let’s just ride this night out together.”
Jiang Xun signaled to the staff for another glass. He took the freshly brought glass, poured some wine into it, then gave it a firm push. The glass slid across the table, stopping right in front of Lin Feng. Lin Feng picked up the glass and swirled the red liquid within. Under the light, the wine shimmered like silk flowing in the wind-soft, luminous, and richly aromatic.
Jiang Xun put down the bottle, “Even though you guys are single, why do I feel like I’m being fed a mouthful of dog food? When you say things like that, can’t you add a tone of lament, a wistful look, so I can feel like I’m doing pretty well, enjoying the freedom of not rushing to find a partner?”
“Really not in a hurry?” Lin Feng asked, blinking with a hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth.
“What good is being anxious? My goddess might not even be born yet,” Jiang Xun took a sip of red wine, leaning back slightly against the sofa chair.
Gu Yuan shook his crossed leg, teasingly, “Maybe your future mother-in-law hasn’t even gotten married yet!”
Jiang Xun shot Gu Yuan a resentful glance, blinking mischievously, “In that case, during the long years of waiting, I’ll just have to crash at your place for meals and a spot on the floor.”
Gu Yuan looked at him with a face full of disdain, “Just for that expression of yours, I must have a son. If you don’t get married, I won’t have a daughter. I can’t handle a son-in-law like you,” he said, shaking his head.
Jiang Xun held back a laugh, pressing his lips together, “I can already imagine being asked decades from now what my biggest regret in life is, and it would definitely be meeting you.”
Gu Yuan feigned innocence, raising his eyebrows, “I just wanted to say our bond is already strong enough; no need to add fuel to the fire.”
Lin Feng shook his head, laughing heartily, “Mind if I fan the flames a bit?”
Gu Yuan and Jiang Xun both looked at Lin Feng, who raised his glass, “Come on, cheers!” The three clinked glasses and immediately let bygones be bygones.
Seeing that the dishes hadn’t arrived yet, Jiang Xun got up to urge the kitchen. Gu Yuan picked up his phone, opened WeChat, and found Xu Wei’s profile picture. His fingers tapped on the screen keyboard, Gu Yuan: ‘Had some drinks, couldn’t find a girl to hit on, so I ended up hitting on your friend’s husband.’
