Dream Dance Gracefully - Chapter 67 - The Girl Who is Pitiful, Tired, and Strong
That very night, Chen Hui brought a doctor to Zhang Wan’er’s home in secret. After examining her condition, the doctor reported that her condition was complex; upon waking, she might suffer from amnesia or even become vegetative, and there was one last, worst possibility-that she might never wake up at all.
These possibilities were undoubtedly a heavy blow for both Chen Hui and Zhang Wan’er, but that was the reality, unchangeable. Chen Hui and the doctor did not stay long; they left shortly thereafter.
Before leaving, Chen Hui told Zhang Wan’er to take good care of Chen Tianqi and not to worry about the company, as this was her home and currently, no one would come to disturb them. If there was anything needed, she should call Chen Tianyou or Yang Xue, and someone would deliver it.
As for Chen Tianqi still being in a coma, she was advised not to tell anyone else, as it was better for fewer people to know.
All Zhang Wan’er could do was nod in agreement. Afterwards, she discussed the situation over the phone with Yang Xue and others, telling Lin Yiyi that Chen Tianqi was caught up in intensive studies at school and couldn’t come home, staying on campus; she told Xu Meng and others that Chen Tianqi had temporarily gone abroad for final training.
She had to deceive both sides, dragging it out as long as possible.
Now, only Zhang Wan’er and the unconscious Chen Tianqi remained in the house. Zhang Wan’er looked at Chen Tianqi’s face for a long time without speaking. She opened her mouth, still wanting to say something.
“Tianqi, I so wish you could stay at my home, but I never wanted it to be this way.”
“In fact, I was placed by someone else to gain your trust and infiltrate the company. Initially, I was unwilling, but they threatened me with my parents’ lives, and I had no choice but to agree.”
“Before, I hesitated a bit. I thought about calling the police, but then I realized it would be useless. People like us from poor families don’t have much power; that’s the reality we must accept.”
“Even if I had called the police, what could it have achieved? Those people are wealthy and can easily get away by throwing money around, while we are left to be the victims.”
At this point, Zhang Wan’er couldn’t hold back any longer and burst into tears. Despite her strong and assertive demeanor at the company, she was, after all, just a girl-a poor woman who, deep down, was fragile and in need of comfort.
“That night’s robbery was also deliberately arranged. Tiger was involved. Before, when I couldn’t afford to pay for school, my parents borrowed money from Tiger. Later, he took my parents away, claiming he needed to discuss the repayment of the debt. They never returned, and then they used my parents’ lives to threaten me, forcing me to comply. I’m sorry, I had no choice.”
“My parents might have already been harmed by them. This is just my guess, but perhaps it’s true. Even if it’s just a sliver of hope, I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to them.”
“I’m sorry, I lied to you, but my feelings for you were true.”
By this time, Zhang Wan’er was sobbing uncontrollably. After enduring so much suffering, she finally expressed her feelings and felt somewhat relieved, but she felt sorry for Chen Tianqi.
Then, Zhang Wan’er leaned on Chen Tianqi’s chest, resting her head against him.
“Tianqi, I’m sorry. I know saying sorry isn’t enough.”
“I’m sorry, please forgive my selfishness.”
“Tianqi, do you know? When they surrounded me and you appeared, blocking that knife for me, I knew then that I had fallen for you.”
“Later, when you visited our area and Yiyi bumped into you, and then you saved me again, you know? I cried after you left. I stood at that corner, watching you walk away, heartbroken. I don’t know if the bicycle was arranged by them, but it certainly increased our interactions.”
“Really, I cried then. I didn’t know what to think at that time; it was so confusing.”
“I’ve fallen for you, but I can’t love you because I don’t deserve to.”
Zhang Wan’er spoke in a somewhat hoarse voice, careful not to speak too loudly, for fear of waking Chen Tianqi. At this moment, she wanted to get everything off her chest; she couldn’t stop now.
“I don’t know what to say or do anymore. I thought about suicide before, but then I thought better of it. After all, my parents might still be alive. If I died, who would take care of them? After all, they only have me, their daughter…”
“I was really conflicted about whether I should keep going when Tiger appeared. Then came the kidnapping incident. Those people hadn’t warned me about it, and I didn’t know what to do. When you showed up again, I so desperately wanted to tell you the truth. But Tiger used such filthy language to insult me, presumably to warn me. I really didn’t know… I just didn’t know…”
“When you showed up, Tiger ran away. Maybe it was because I had gotten closer to you. They must have predicted your nature and your kindness, which made it impossible for them to let me go home. So, it meant I could gain your trust even more.”
“After going to your house, I realized I liked you even more. The next day, when we went out to have fun, I truly didn’t want to keep hiding things from you anymore, but I still couldn’t bring myself to say anything. The hair clip you gave me was beautiful, and I really liked it.”
“Then I moved in with Xue-Jie. At that point, those people realized I had earned your trust. After that, they sent people to harass me every day, trying to keep me from studying and pushing me to work instead. Where was I supposed to work? Your kindness was too great; you wouldn’t let me become a drifter, so I had no choice but to go to your company. But they wanted me to steal company secrets. I held on, using the excuse that I hadn’t fully gained your trust yet, and I managed to hold out for several months. Just yesterday, they called to threaten me with my parents. I didn’t act yet, but look at you now… I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.”
“I’m sorry. I still… want to say I’m sorry. Please forgive me, this girl who loves you but feels so unworthy of your sympathy…”
After speaking, Zhang Wan’er let out a sigh of relief, gently kissed Chen Tianqi on the lips, and rested her head on his chest, a smile on her lips, slowly drifting off to sleep… Maybe she was just too tired.
Xu Meng also realized that Zhang Wan’er hadn’t been home for a long time. She wanted to check on Zhang Wan’er’s house, worried that if Zhang Wan’er came back and teased her for not taking care of it, she wouldn’t have an excuse.
When Xu Meng arrived at Zhang Wan’er’s house, she never expected the truth to be like this. Understanding Zhang Wan’er, she kept silent and waited until Zhang Wan’er fell asleep before quietly leaving… It turned out that the other phone number on that paper belonged to those people!
She understood her-Zhang Wan’er was simply too exhausted. As Xu Meng stepped outside, she looked up at the moon, feeling as if she wanted to cry, yet forcing herself to smile: “If I were Wan’er, I might have already collapsed by now.”
In truth, Zhang Wan’er was very pitiful, very tired, but also incredibly strong.
