- Chapter 50 - The Zhu Family Visits
Initially, Mother Lin had perused quite a few portraits, all depicting young ladies of noble birth, far surpassing Zhu Cui’er in every aspect. However, as more matchmakers arrived, she could only set the portraits aside, intending for Lin Feng to review them upon his return.
Gradually, the number of matchmakers dwindled. Meanwhile, outside the Lin Family residence, Butcher Zhu and his family watched in disbelief as matchmakers, laden with precious gifts, nearly wore down the threshold of Lin Feng’s home. They wondered if they had mistaken the address.
“What’s going on? Even if Lin Feng joined the Demon Exorcism Division, it’s only been a few days. Could it be that all the noble ladies of Kaiyang County have taken a fancy to him?” Aunt Zhu questioned, her words tinged with jealousy.
“It’s all your fault, you silly girl! Why did you choose that useless Xu Xiong back then? Now he can’t even move, and with Xu Qiang dead, so many are seeking revenge on the Xu family. We might get dragged into this mess!” Aunt Zhu’s frustration mounted as she poked Zhu Cui’er on the head.
“Enough! Do you have a death wish? Daring to speak ill of the Xu family-if they hear of this, they won’t spare us! Hurry inside and see if you can get a read on Elder Sister-in-law’s mood. She’s soft-hearted; maybe we can make some headway with her. Lin Feng might be a tougher nut to crack,” Butcher Zhu intervened, stopping his wife.
In truth, all three of them had been blinded by greed back then. The blame couldn’t rest solely on their daughter. Zhu Cui’er wore a look of grievance.
The three of them, casting furtive glances around, sneaked into the Lin Family home. As they entered the hall, only two matchmakers remained, with Mother Lin attending to them.
“Elder Sister-in-law, we came to see you. Look at you, moving into a new home and not inviting us for a drink! Old Zhu and I brought some meat today, to nourish you, Lin-Ge’er, and Lin Man,” Aunt Zhu began, as if the incident with Xu Xiong had never occurred.
But upon seeing them, Mother Lin’s previously cheerful face clouded over. Restraining herself due to the presence of the matchmakers, she held back her anger.
At this moment, Zhu Cui’er offered a candy apple to Lin Man. Lin Man glanced at the candy apple, then at Zhu Cui’er, and shook her head, saying, “My brother said that we have nothing to do with your family anymore! You left with that Xu Xiong, so you’re no longer my future sister-in-law!”
Previously, Lin Man hadn’t understood what transpired between Lin Feng and Zhu Cui’er. Lin Feng had simply told her that one sentence, which she remembered well. The only one at fault was Xu Xiong!
The two matchmakers, skilled in their craft, not only read the room but had also done some background research on Lin Feng. They understood that this was the Zhu Family, who had previously broken off the engagement with Lin Feng. From Mother Lin’s expression, it was clear they were unwelcome.
Lin Man, with her innocent and candid nature, spoke words that represented Lin Feng’s stance. Since both the key figures were displeased with these visitors, there was no need to be courteous. Handling this situation well could earn them favor with Mother Lin and Lin Feng, potentially increasing the success rate of the matchmaking.
“Oh, how amusing! Bringing three taels of pork, are you trying to feed beggars? And you say it’s to nourish Elderly Madam Lin! Look here, this is what you call a tonic!”
With that, the matchmaker opened a brocade box, revealing a ginseng root inside.
“Exactly! I’ve heard this girl has been mingling with the Young Master of the Xu family for a while now, hasn’t she? And now she comes to the Lin family? I’m afraid she’s tainting the Lin family!”
The rival matchmaker struck first, slyly implying Zhu Cui’er was unclean. The other matchmaker, not to be outdone, chimed in with her own jibe.
Hearing this, the faces of the Zhu family turned.
“Heh, Elder Sister-in-law, those are just rumors! Cui’er has always been virtuous. Back when she was with Lin-Ge’er, it was all aboveboard!”
Butcher Zhu laughed awkwardly, trying to brush it off.
Mother Lin, hearing this, was about to say something when the matchmaker interjected.
“Hah, that was then. Some people, after a few good days, forget who they are! Probably knocked senseless by silver. Clean or not, who knows?”
“Right, and even if she were clean, so what? Can she compare to the refined ladies and delicate beauties of the city? What does she have to offer? The big faces of the Zhu family?”
The other matchmaker quickly added her own jab.
“Clean or not? Just wash up, and it’s clean, right?” Lin Man tilted her head, puzzled. She didn’t understand the adults’ words.
Seeing the conversation getting more pointed, Mother Lin sent Lin Man away. Such adult talk wasn’t suitable for a seven-year-old.
“You!” Aunt Zhu raised her hand, pointing at the matchmakers, her chest heaving with anger.
Butcher Zhu also showed a rare look of guilt. Zhu Cui’er, facing the sharp words of the matchmakers, couldn’t lift her head.
Mother Lin, usually gentle and kind, couldn’t have come up with such words herself. But hearing them was so satisfying!
Indeed, it takes a villain to deal with a villain!
“You what! If it were me, I’d have no face to come to the Lin family! Sister Lin is kind, not holding it against you. Yet you push your luck! There’s an old saying: today you ignore me, tomorrow you’ll be out of my league! Give up on this idea! Lin-Ge’er is beyond your reach!”
This blow left the Zhu family defenseless. Facing the matchmakers’ verbal assault, they fled in haste!
“Wait, take this pork with you! Xiao Feng said, consider the silver from Xu Xiong as a gift to you. From now on, there’s no need for our families to interact!”
Mother Lin declared.
The Zhu family had hoped to maintain some connection with this pitiful pork. In the end, the matchmaker handed the pork back to Zhu Cui’er and sent them on their way.
Mother Lin was elated. She barely said three words, and the Zhu family fled like rats!
Feeling generous, Mother Lin rewarded the matchmakers with two taels of silver.
In the end, Mother Lin agreed to keep the portraits but returned all the gifts. Although traditionally parents and matchmakers arranged marriages, Lin Feng was now grown and the head of the family. Such matters should be his decision.
That evening, when Lin Feng returned home and saw the portraits, he was both amused and exasperated. He knew it was because of his potential that these families wanted to secure ties with him through marriage.
However, he wasn’t considering such things now. After admiring the portraits, he asked his mother to politely decline them.
As for the Zhu family, he fully supported his mother and sister’s approach. Such people didn’t deserve any courtesy.
Not long after, to his surprise, Zhao Chengze, the Young Master of the Zhao family, visited their home!
