Demon Apartment - Chapter 29 - The Second Victim
After the car accident years ago, Dong Xie and his sister Dong Ning were closely looked after by the Traffic Police Captain in charge of the incident. Despite not being wealthy himself, he frequently helped them out financially and even visited during holidays. Having witnessed numerous tragic accidents caused by drunk driving, the captain felt a deep sympathy for the siblings who had lost their parents, and he went far beyond his duties in caring for them. This experience left Dong Xie and Dong Ning with a profound respect for the police profession.
“It’s for everyone’s good!” Ge Qi quickly defended himself. “No one knows what’s up on the fourth floor. If we really have to go there, then let the police scout ahead! Don’t worry, long history has shown that no matter how severe the consequences of the Blood Letter Task, the police never trace it back to us!”
Each Blood Letter Task inevitably resulted in death. If the police got involved every time, residents would have been arrested as suspects long ago. Dong Xie learned from past blood letter records that many serious cases were linked to these tasks. The most baffling part was that many residents had hoped to expose the existence of the Apartment by involving the media or even the government. In this era of widespread smartphones and advanced internet, just uploading a video online could draw significant attention. There had been residents who live-streamed during a blood letter execution, and others like Ge Qi who reported to the police in hopes they would arrive at the scene of the execution. However, no matter the method used, the Apartment’s terrifying curse seemed to keep the Blood Letter Task and its existence completely hidden in this information-saturated society!
This Apartment was far more horrifying than they had imagined.
“The police protect our lives, it’s a highly sacred profession!” Dong Xie, now more furious at Ge Qi than afraid for himself, exclaimed, “They are not meant to be used as cannon fodder by scum like you!”
Dong Ning turned to Zhao Long, urgently asking, “I remember during a previous routine meeting about the Blood Letter, it was mentioned that some residents had called the police during an execution. What happened?”
“The task was being executed out of town, and the contact was lost midway through,” Zhao Long replied, appearing embarrassed, “so I’m not very sure about the outcome. However, I suspect the police probably did not respond. In the past, there were instances where residents made false alarms to get the police to come to the alley in front of the Apartment, but they never showed up.”
Hearing this, Dong Ning nodded, “Let’s hope it stays that way.”
She moved towards the telephone, intending to reconnect the line and call 110 to report a prank. However, she then reconsidered.
The call was cut off by Ge Qi right after her brother angrily asked, “Who are you calling?” It was likely the police would interpret it as an emergency and respond. If she called back now claiming it was a prank, the police might not believe it, and would probably send someone to check. This would hardly be helpful.
“Let’s hope the police don’t show up.”
At this moment, Dong Ning could only pray.
Dong Xie had the idea to just lock Ge Qi up here and let him fend for himself. If it weren’t for the presence of the Evil Spirit, requiring him to maintain his energy, he would have liked to fight Ge Qi right then!
But he quickly dismissed the idea. If the police did come, Ge Qi would surely cry for help, and they would have to break in to rescue this scum. Thus, it was better to keep this troublemaker close.
He stopped clutching at Ge Qi’s collar and instead pushed him forcefully backward! He even wiped his hands afterwards, feeling contaminated by the mere touch.
“Stay right behind me… I’ll be watching you closely!”
As Dong Xie uttered these words, suddenly, the candle in his hand went out!
This shocked him immensely!
“Candle! Ge Qi, the lighter!”
But… there was no response in the darkness.
“Let’s get out of here!”
“Move!”
Fortunately, it wasn’t pitch black; they could still see the main door. Dong Xie quickly grabbed Dong Ning, and together with Zhao Long, they rushed outside!
Meanwhile, the door shut behind them automatically!
Dong Xie approached the door, calling out, “Ge Qi? Ge Qi!”
But there was no response.
Realizing something, he sprinted towards the elevator!
As he arrived at the elevator door, sure enough… the elevator was moving!
The numbers on the display were climbing…
Soon, the display stopped at the fourth floor!
“It’s Ge Qi!” Dong Xie could imagine Ge Qi’s current state; he was probably ending up like Feng Yu.
Dong Ning and Zhao Long also ran up, their expressions grave.
Ge Qi deserved his fate, but the Evil Spirit did not discriminate in its killings.
Just moments ago, Ge Qi was in the room, and now… he was heading straight up in the elevator!
“Listen…” Zhao Long hesitated, then said, “Although I think it’s unlikely the police will actually come, if they do… maybe we can use their fate as a gauge. If someone from the police can escape the fourth floor…”
But Dong Xie was strongly opposed to this idea: “If the police come, it would be a senseless death! They shouldn’t die for a scum like Ge Qi!”
Dong Ning nodded, recalling the face of the Traffic Police Captain. She felt it was more likely that the police would not come. She hoped… nothing would happen.
Looking at the elevator before them, they all understood one fact.
What happened to Feng Yu and Ge Qi could also happen to them.
“We probably still need to go to the fourth floor,” Dong Ning said, holding a photo frame in her hand, “I’m almost certain there are more clues up there… We…”
The three understood this was inevitable.
Zhao Long clenched his teeth, saying, “But… but… we can still wait for the police, just…”
“Zhao Long!”
“What if we go to the fourth floor now and the police come and think we’re suspects? What then?”
At this moment, the elevator in front of them seemed like a true gateway to hell. Whether they entered or not, they faced a terrifying fate of death!
