Demon Apartment - Chapter 14 - Another Room
At that moment, everyone’s face turned pale with fear. Feng Yu, in particular, was in a terrible state, his legs shaking so violently that he nearly fell to the ground.
All five of them held their breath at the same time, not daring to say another word, listening intently to the sounds from below. Despite being a floor apart, the noises were surprisingly clear, indicating just how loud the disturbance downstairs was.
Then, the surroundings fell silent once again, with no more sounds to be heard.
Dong Xie too was terrified, his heart racing as he leaned against the wall for support, his other hand still tightly grasping his sister Dong Ning’s hand.
About ten seconds later, Ge Qi swept around with his lighter, ensuring that no “Unnameable Things” had appeared, before he finally relaxed slightly. He looked at Zhao Long and whispered as quietly as possible, “Do you think… those things… will they come up here?”
Zhao Long’s expression was equally grim. He swallowed hard and replied, “I… don’t know… If those things come up…”
If they did, it would be the end for them!
The residents faced those terrifying “Unnameable Things” with absolutely no means to resist. And in this space where their movement was restricted… what could they do?
“Whose idea was it to rent this apartment!” Feng Yu bitterly exclaimed, “If I had known there were no security guards in this community, and that all the residents had gone on a group trip, we wouldn’t have needed to rent an apartment on the fifth floor of Building 3! If we had stayed on the first floor…”
Ge Qi gave a wry smile and said, “That… wouldn’t have made any difference. Even if we had gone to the first floor, it wouldn’t have helped. We can’t escape! Otherwise, our shadows would control our bodies to commit suicide! No resident has ever been able to break the Shadow Curse!”
Hearing this, Dong Xie glanced at the shadow cast on the wall by the lighter in Ge Qi’s hand. He knew his shadow was cursed by the Apartment, and that curse was the most desperate of all. Humans have no way to rid themselves of their own shadows. In the past, residents had tried various methods to break the Shadow Curse, including staying out of sunlight or having someone tie them up to prevent the shadow from controlling them. But no method worked; the shadow would inevitably kill the resident if they dared to violate the apartment’s rules. In fact, not only human residents, but even the “Unnameable Things” that invaded the apartment would be devoured immediately.
“All we can do is pray ‘they’ don’t come up!” Feng Yu actually wanted to run away, but where could he go? The only hope was that “those things” would not kill him if they did come up. During the Blood Letter Task, residents were typically killed one by one, not two at the same time (though that could happen, but generally not). The apartment limited how quickly “they” could kill the residents, usually allowing a gap between each death. This time, the Blood Letter was set for five hours, so it was likely that one resident would be killed per hour. Feng Yu just hoped that he wouldn’t be the first to die, preferably one of the new residents instead. That way, he would have an extra hour. It was like playing Russian roulette, and now Feng Yu hoped others would die before him so he could find a Path to Survival.
“Zhao Long, do you… do you have any ideas?” Feng Yu looked at Zhao Long, hoping he could come up with a plan.
Zhao Long was completely out of ideas, too. It was his first time performing the Blood Letter Task in such a confined building with no place to run. In such a situation, he didn’t know what to do. Moreover, he was fed up with Feng Yu and Ge Qi constantly asking him questions!
At that moment, Dong Ning tugged at Dong Xie’s hand, and he immediately turned to his sister.
“Ah Ning?”
“In critical times, there’s no need for you to stand in front of me. It’s an era of gender equality, and I will stand with you.”
Then, she moved in front of Dong Xie, her eyes filled with unwavering determination.
“Even if only for a second, don’t die before me. I don’t want to go through that pain again.”
Hearing Dong Ning’s words deeply moved Dong Xie. Naturally, she was referring to the death of their parents. After that car accident, Ah Ning had lived in deep gloom for a long time, never smiling even during the funniest movies. It was Dong Xie who had always taken care of her, slowly helping her to become like she was now, a normal girl who liked sweets, makeup, and even doing beauty live streams.
Dong Xie knew that for Ah Ning, who lost her parents at the age of eleven, he was both a father and a mother. He washed her clothes, checked her homework, attended her parent-teacher meetings, selected clothes for her, and even kept track of her menstrual cycle to prepare sweet ginger tea for her… Their aunt and grandmother always disliked Ah Ning, especially disapproving of him caring for a child who had no blood relation to the Dong Family. However, he had always kept this secret; had Ah Ning known back then, she might not have been as cheerful, strong, and resilient as she is now, even in such a terrifying and desperate situation, she still thought of her elder brother first.
“Ah Ning, you are my sister!” Dong Xie no longer cared about Ah Ning’s bloodline. To him, Ah Ning was a Dong, his sister. No one could change that. Her mother’s mistakes should not be borne by her. No matter what she said, Dong Xie could not allow her to be harmed!
“Huh? Wait? This door is ajar!”
At that moment, Ge Qi noticed a door slightly open, revealing a crack.
They all looked over.
Dong Xie’s eyes lit up, knowing that just moments ago, his life had flashed before his eyes.
“Maybe there’s a clue inside!” Dong Xie pointed to the ajar door, saying, “Should we… check it out?”
Despite his words, no one dared to move.
Who knew what might be lurking behind the door?
At that moment, Dong Ning pulled out a folding mini selfie stick from her pocket and extended it to its full length. Dong Ning, who often spontaneously did outdoor live streams, never forgot to bring her selfie stick when she went out. She now used the selfie stick to gently push the ajar door open, while Dong Xie held her hand, ready to protect his sister if anything sprung out.
The door opened… revealing a room even more bare than an unfurnished apartment, devoid of any furniture.
“Shall we go in… and take a look?”
