- Chapter 37 - The Craftiest Lone Wolf!
In the surveillance footage, the battles between the two classes almost always ended in victory for Class C. The students from Class F were either knocked down or fled. The few points they managed to secure came from the stronger teams within Class F, but even then, they paid the price of losing two members to incapacitation.
Once a student loses combat ability or falls unconscious, even if their points aren’t stolen, they must withdraw from the competition. The method is simple: teammates directly take their points, and medical personnel will arrive from the nearby service area.
Taking a teammate’s points doesn’t increase the class’s score; instead, it raises one’s own “value.” For example, if a team member takes a teammate’s points, and then the enemy defeats them, the points gained will increase from 2 to 4. This isn’t beneficial, as one’s strength doesn’t increase with their value, turning them into a juicy target.
For Class F, the situation was decidedly disadvantageous.
“Qinghua, what exactly are you thinking?” Li Jingru tossed the remaining half of her cookie into her mouth, chewing quietly. The elegant and gentle woman now wore no smile, her eyes dark and deep, as if the very light around her had dimmed.
Wu Qinghua, seemingly oblivious to the tension, sipped her tea and nibbled on a cookie, her demeanor relaxed and composed. “I simply arranged the teams rationally.”
“Rational arrangement?” Li Jingru scoffed, “Putting ranks 2-5 into the Wolf Pack squads, is that your arrangement?”
Wu Qinghua’s expression remained unchanged, replying calmly, “It’s allowed by the rules.”
“It is allowed, but it also means you’ve completely abandoned the Lone Wolf side’s potential.” Li Jingru rested her delicate hand on her cheek, confidently laying out her opponent’s strategy: “You believe Wu Zhixing is no match for our Top Student, so you shifted all elite forces to the Wolf Pack side, aiming to win solely through team strength.”
Wu Qinghua took a sip of tea, not denying the accusation.
“You should know, this strategy only works in the early stages; you can’t win.” Li Jingru twirled a lock of hair around her finger, speaking with a playful tone, “Class C can’t possibly wipe out all my class’s Wolf Packs, and on the Lone Wolf side, how many points can you get?”
Such a simple tactic is understood by everyone; why not use it? Clearly, it’s not worth the cost!
This is the mountains, not a rigid arena. The initial skirmishes can indeed catch the opponent off guard, but if they can’t win, they’ll run. Once fleeing students encounter other squads, Class F’s Wolf Pack will surely guess the opponent’s strategy.
Students aren’t fools; knowing the opponent is formidable, they’ll choose to avoid battle. With so many mountain paths and forests, escaping is easy. As long as they don’t linger in the lower levels, they can move upward while evading, and if the opportunity arises, they can engage in guerrilla tactics, taking down a few opponents.
Over the years, it’s rare for a Wolf Pack squad to be completely wiped out, as the competition usually ends before that happens.
“You’ve placed several ordinary students to the north; if they encounter my class’s elites, they probably won’t even manage to escape…”
As soon as Li Jingru finished speaking, a video popped up on the Lone Wolf side-
A Class C student, cautiously peeking around a corner, unexpectedly encountered an opposing Lone Wolf. Although he turned to run, he was no match for the other’s speed and was quickly subdued.
On the screen, Class F’s score immediately jumped from 8 to 13.
“Yay~! Points get!”
Li Jingru flashed a peace sign, her face lit up with an innocent and carefree smile.
“My students are really smart. Once they spot a problem, they’ll definitely take action. By then, your advantage will be gone~!”
Wu Qinghua adjusted her glasses, her expression unreadable.
…
In the northern upper area.
Several Lone Wolves from Class F had already gathered.
“Liu Yuqian, are you sure you don’t need us to deal with Wu Zhixing?”
“Yeah! What if they gang up on you…”
On the steps, two tall boys looked a bit hesitant.
“No need, the opposing Lone Wolves are weak. I can handle them on my own.”
Standing before them was a strikingly poised woman.
She wore her hair in a high ponytail, stood nearly six feet tall, with a dignified and beautiful face, exuding confidence.
Liu Yuqian, the top student of Class F, ranked fourth in the grade.
“Xiao Yu has already headed over. You guys should hurry up and try to ease the Wolf Pack’s situation.”
Seeing this, the two boys nodded and quickly made their way to the mountaintop.
Beep-
Liu Yuqian pressed her watch, and the scores displayed-34 to 20.
There was still one Class F student unaccounted for, likely staying mid-mountain to hunt down opponents.
Liu Yuqian neither supported nor opposed this approach.
Besides Wu Zhixing, Class C had two Lone Wolves yet to be captured, which represented a significant 10 points.
Glancing up at the mountaintop, Liu Yuqian leaped forward.
She had no intention of aiding the Wolf Pack but aimed to guard the path to the summit.
There was only one road leading to the top from the north side of the mountain. As long as she held her ground there, Wu Zhixing would eventually have to face her head-on.
Once she defeated Wu Zhixing, the game would be as good as over…
…
Jogging along the mountain path, Lin Xiao was starting to doubt his luck.
Why hasn’t he encountered anyone!?
Is his luck really that bad? Not even a Lone Wolf in sight!
Initially, Lin Xiao thought he might be climbing too fast, so he paused for a while.
He took in the flowers, grass, and trees on the mountain, enjoying the natural scenery.
But all that accompanied him were the insects and birds of the mountains; no enemies, not even teammates, were in sight.
Could it be that he’s the only one on the north side of the mountain…?
Checking the scores, Lin Xiao sighed softly.
Oh well, Class C has the upper hand with the Wolf Pack anyway, so there’s no need to rush.
The ones who should be anxious are the opponents!
With that thought, Lin Xiao relaxed, even considering taking a break at the service area.
“Top Student-!”
Just as he entered the service area and took a sip of his drink, a sorrowful shout startled him.
A girl with a bob haircut and delicate features came running over, her expression as excited as if she’d found a long-lost relative.
“Dong Li… have you been hiding in the service area?”
This girl was one of the “fat sheep” among Class C’s Lone Wolves, and surprisingly, she had managed to stay hidden.
Standing before Lin Xiao, Dong Li, with tears in her eyes, recounted her arduous journey:
“I didn’t dare take the main roads, so I kept to the small woods… Every time I found a service area, I’d hide there for ten minutes, even in the women’s restroom…”
Her lips pouted, her eyes red, as if she’d suffered a great injustice.
Impressive, Lin Xiao felt a newfound respect for her.
“You’ve really had it tough. From now on, just stick with me.”
“Mm-hmm… okay-!”
Though a bit disheveled, her strategy had indeed been effective. Besides Lin Xiao and Wu Zhixing, she was likely the only remaining Lone Wolf from Class C.
Lin Xiao set off again, this time with a companion.
Her mouth, like a sparrow, chattered incessantly, giving Lin Xiao a vivid account of her harrowing Lone Wolf journey.
Thanks to her storytelling talent, the journey was no longer dull.
