Beneath the Dome, Sin within Sins - Chapter 80 - Sacrifice to Heaven
“Hey, senior, what do you think that bandaged man is going to do to us?” Su Mo pressed his still-dazed temples and spoke with a hint of helplessness.
I let out a long sigh. At this moment, I couldn’t stay optimistic either. Impenetrable walls-there was no way we could escape, even if we somehow sprouted wings.
“I don’t know. Probably he thought we were in his way and decided to lock us up,” I replied. After saying this, I paused, deliberated for a moment, and then solemnly added, “No, wait. I think he specifically found me annoying. As for you, he probably grabbed you… incidentally.”
“Senior! That really hurts my feelings. Why do I feel like I’m just an extra here?” Su Mo complained indignantly.
I shot Su Mo a glare and stayed silent, closing my eyes to reflect on all that had happened over the past couple of days. Just then, a series of footsteps suddenly echoed in the distance.
At the exact moment I heard it, my expression changed abruptly. I scrambled to my feet and shoved Su Mo to the ground.
My rapid sequence of actions took Su Mo by surprise. Once he regained his composure, he immediately began struggling, but I quickly made a shushing gesture toward him.
At that point, Su Mo finally picked up on the sound of the approaching footsteps. He nodded at once, signaling that he understood.
I lay back down on the ground, feigning unconsciousness.
The footsteps grew louder, and soon I heard the clanking of the iron door as it creaked open. Then, the bandaged man’s voice drifted into my ears: “Ha, these two are truly overestimating themselves!”
“Of course! No one can ever surpass your brilliance!” a voice replied.
The second I heard that voice, I nearly leapt up from the ground. The speaker was none other than Jiang Wu!
I had known from the start that this bandaged man wasn’t as virtuous as he’d claimed! He said he wouldn’t cause trouble, yet here he was, orchestrating a chain of disasters. Who else but him could be behind all of this?
But what concerned me even more right now was whether Su Mo might suddenly jump up in a moment of impulsiveness. If he did, we’d definitely be in deep trouble.
Thankfully, Su Mo kept his cool this time, saving us from immediate danger.
“Hmph! Those cops actually think they can stop me? What a ridiculous joke! This world is already far too filthy. My mission is to make God reclaim these inferior creations, so that the world can be remade anew!” the bandaged man proclaimed.
“Your words are absolutely right. I’ll follow you closely and ensure I become your most capable assistant!” Jiang Wu responded with fervent admiration.
Honestly, if the situation weren’t so dire, I probably would’ve burst out laughing. What was this nonsense? They sounded like characters straight out of a cringey teenager’s daydream. I was utterly speechless.
This bandaged man had clearly watched one too many anime series. His head was swimming with grandiose ideas about saving the world. And who did he think he was, anyway? No matter how filthy this world might be, cleaning it up wasn’t up to him. What an absurdity!
“Mr. Lu, since you’re awake, why don’t you get up?”
The soft, eerie voice of the bandaged man nearly made cold sweat break out all over me.
I swallowed hard. At a time like this, I had to stay calm. Maybe he was just bluffing.
While I was battling with myself internally, Jiang Wu spoke up. “Sir, this guy has already passed out. What exactly are you suspicious of?”
Exactly! I’m supposed to be unconscious! Does this guy really have to overcomplicate things with all these antics?
“Heh, passed out?” The bandaged man let out a sinister chuckle. “Do you really think an enhancement agent test subject would faint that easily? I wasn’t counting on that small dose to keep him under for long.”
Hearing this, I couldn’t help but laugh to myself silently. This bandaged man-what a piece of work. What kind of wild ideas does he even come up with every day?
Since he had already called my bluff, there was no point in pretending any longer.
I stood up, stretched my body a little, and met the bandaged man’s gaze with a cold smirk. “So, what if I am awake? Sir, things have already come this far. Would you mind telling me who you really are?”
“The identity?” Jiang Wu stepped forward, his face contorted with disdain. “You’re not worthy of knowing!”
I frowned at the man standing before me. “Just a minion like you? What makes you think you have the right to talk to me?”
Jiang Wu’s expression immediately darkened. I could see he was ready to pounce on me at any moment, but the bandaged man raised a hand to stop him.
“Stand down.” The bandaged man’s raspy voice slid out of his throat, sending shivers down my spine.
As soon as the bandaged man spoke, Jiang Wu instantly transformed into a picture of submissiveness. Watching him grovel like a lapdog was truly nauseating.
“Sir!” Jiang Wu stuttered nervously. It was clear he was deeply afraid of this man.
“Step aside! This is not your concern!”
“Yes… sir.”
As Jiang Wu retreated, he shot me a venomous glare, clearly frustrated. It was evident he had hoped to ride on the power of his master to intimidate me. Too bad for him-it was a complete failure, and a pathetic one at that.
I shifted my focus back to the bandaged man. Let’s see, then. What’s this guy, all wrapped up like a mummy, really plotting?
The bandaged man sauntered leisurely up to me. With a cryptic smile, he said, “I told you not to get involved. Watching yourself fall into trap after trap, step by step, and being utterly powerless to stop it-your heart must be uneasy, isn’t it? Are you regretting it now? If you’d just listened to me in the beginning, we wouldn’t be here today.”
“Sorry to disappoint you,” I said, meeting his deep, ominous gaze squarely, enunciating each word carefully, “but from the very beginning, I had no intention of listening to you. Trusting the words of a murderer is no different from asking a tiger for mercy. Do you really think anything good could come of that?”
The bandaged man’s expression tightened, his composure momentarily cracked by my comment. He grit his teeth and stared at me for a long moment before finally spitting out, “You’re truly relentless!”
“Not really. I’m just staying true to myself.”
“Sir! Why waste so many words on him? People like him deserve to die!” Jiang Wu shot me a glare so fierce that if looks could kill, I’d already be chopped into pieces.
“You’re right-people like him shouldn’t be allowed to live,” the bandaged man said, his tone icy but calm. “But I can’t let him go that easily.”
Though his words were directed at Jiang Wu, his piercing gaze never left me. It was as if he were studying every part of my soul, contemplating how best to destroy me.
“Hah! The way you talk is just like you-always hiding in the shadows, never allowing yourself to see the light of day!” I snapped, grinding my teeth in frustration.
But the bandaged man didn’t erupt in anger at my taunt. Instead, he smiled, a chilling, composed expression that sent a shiver down my spine.
“Your sharp tongue won’t be of much use for much longer. Don’t worry-I won’t hold it against you.”
As he spoke, he raised a hand and patted my shoulder, causing my whole body to tense. Then, he added, his tone somber yet taunting, “You and your Director Su, just prepare yourselves… to become the sacrifice to heaven.”
