- Chapter 6 - Burn a Maserati for Him
As we spoke, the vengeful ghost’s crimson lips parted to reveal a pale tongue.
The tongue slurped, then suddenly stretched out long.
Like a snake, it coiled towards me.
I couldn’t dodge it.
The tongue swiftly wrapped around my neck.
A chilling sensation and suffocation hit me simultaneously.
I was instantly immobilized, as if plunged into an ice cellar.
The female ghost’s face rapidly closed in, enlarging before my eyes.
A foul stench assaulted me.
I could almost see her rotting oral cavity.
It was like a vast black hole.
Just at the critical moment, the old man’s voice suddenly rang out:
“Trying to harm someone in front of me, do you think I’m dead?”
As the old man spoke.
The female ghost nearby suddenly shrieked and retracted her tongue.
She moved aside, glaring at the old man, her body emanating dark energy.
Could this old man see the female ghost?
I knew it! No normal person would sell sweet potatoes in the middle of the night!
At that moment, the old man was inspecting his oven.
He pulled out a roasted sweet potato that seemed a bit cold.
The old man asked me, “Young man, would you like a sweet potato?”
Without hesitation, I nodded frantically: “Yes! Yes, yes!”
The old man smiled, his wrinkles bunching together, and gestured for me to come closer.
As I approached him, the female ghost kept a stern watch on me but didn’t advance.
At this time, the old man took a stainless steel basin out of his tricycle.
He then began to dig out various items from the bottom of the pile.
There were incense candles, joss paper, and even a paper car.
Clearly, these were for a ritual for the deceased.
As he busied himself, he said, “I sell sweet potatoes at East Lake Park during the day. Business was good today, and I was rushing over here only now.”
While I kept an eye on the female ghost, I picked up the conversation:
“Old man, did you rush over here to pay respects to someone?”
The old man replied, “At this intersection, someone was killed last month.
The driver who died, his ghost still lingers here.
His family contacted me to help send off his spirit.”
After speaking, the old man looked towards the Red-Dressed Female Ghost with a smile and asked, “Would you like to be sent off as well?”
The Red-Dressed Female Ghost, as if startled, quickly retreated.
She cast an unwilling glance at me and slowly disappeared into the darkness.
I could feel her leaving, as the putrid smell in the air vanished with her.
Just a few words from the old man had scared off the Red-Dressed Female Ghost.
Was he even more formidable than the young security guard?
Seeing the female ghost leave, the old man said to me, “Could you help me out?”
Of course!
He had saved me tonight.
Perhaps, he might also help with the matter of saving Ye Manman and dealing with the Red-Dressed Female Ghost!
I immediately nodded and agreed.
The old man then directed me to burn the joss paper by the roadside to summon the spirit.
Following his instructions, I set up the basin.
While calling out the name of the Yellow-haired person, I burned the ‘sealed joss paper’ in the basin.
On the sealed joss paper, the name and birth details of the Yellow-haired person were written.
“Sun Yuan, come and collect your money.”
“Sun Yuan, come and collect your car.”
“Sun Yuan, it’s time to eat.”
As I called out, I sequentially burned the joss paper and the paper car.
Meanwhile, the old man took out a plate with two roasted sweet potatoes on it.
With the sweet potatoes, he inserted a stick of incense.
As the incense lit, the old man took out a bell.
He rang it while seemingly reciting some scripture.
Soon, my calling and the old man’s bell ringing synergized into a rhythmic harmony.
As the Maserati in the basin burned to ashes, a chilling wind suddenly swept through the intersection.
Leaves on the ground began swirling in a vortex.
This kind of swirling wind is often referred to as a Ghostly Whirlwind in folklore.
A Ghostly Whirlwind indicates the presence of malevolent spirits.
True enough, at the end of the intersection, a white car appeared.
The car moved silently but at a high speed, stopping just a few meters away from me and the old man.
Then, the Yellow-haired driver from the previous night excitedly got out, looking at the fire pit in front of me:
“Damn, a Maserati! My mom finally decided to be generous!”
Under the streetlights, the Yellow-haired person had no shadow.
He looked almost identical to a living person, except his complexion was slightly blueish.
At this moment, he was ecstatic, grabbing handfuls of ash from the fire pit and tossing them into the air. A Maserati materialized beside him.
He reached into the fire pit again, this time grabbing a stack of money.
Just like the money we use, except it was all blue.
“Thanks, brother.”
The Yellow-haired person excitedly stuffed the money into his pockets, thanking me.
After grabbing the money, he prepared to get into his new car.
That’s when the old man reminded him, “Sun Yuan, have something to eat before you go.”
Sun Yuan looked at the sweet potatoes on the plate and sniffed disdainfully, “Why does it smell bad?”
The old man replied, “It smells bad but tastes great.”
Sun Yuan shook his head, “No thanks, my car was wrecked, and I’ve been unable to pass on. Now that I have a new car, I need to hurry.”
The previous white car was now a wreck.
The front of the car was completely destroyed, and a faint black energy emanated from it.
The old man, smiling warmly, pointed at the roasted sweet potatoes, “You’re late. No matter how fast your car, you can’t see the road clearly. Eat the sweet potatoes, clear your head, brighten your heart. Then you’ll know the way.”
Upon hearing this, Sun Yuan seemed to ponder for a moment, then suddenly slapped his forehead, “Right, why didn’t I think of the route to report down below?”
The old man remained silent.
Sun Yuan realized something and immediately leaned over to the sweet potatoes, taking a deep breath.
The incense inserted in the sweet potatoes burned rapidly, visible to the naked eye.
As the incense burned down, Sun Yuan belched, exhaling a puff of black air.
Immediately afterward, his face lit up with surprise, “I remember the way now, thank you, old man!”
The old man chuckled and advised, “Drive carefully on the road.”
Sun Yuan nodded repeatedly, his face brimming with joy as he got into the car.
As he was about to drive off, he waved at us, “Thank you guys, I’m heading off first! I’ll wait for you down below!”
I choked, just about to say there was no need.
Sun Yuan had already stepped on the gas pedal, driving away.
The Maserati didn’t travel far from the intersection when a semicircular dark portal vaguely appeared ahead.
It resembled a tunnel to another world.
The vehicle vanished into the tunnel.
Shortly after, the tunnel also rapidly disappeared.
I stared at the scene, dumbfounded.
This was likely a scene ordinary people would never encounter in their lifetimes.
So it turns out that ghosts, the Underworld, all these things actually exist.
“Young man, thank you for your help tonight.”
The old man suddenly spoke up.
I snapped back to reality, quickly responding, “No, no, no, I should be thanking you. Thank you for saving me. You are truly a master!”
The old man laughed, “Not really a master, I just know some ‘spirit sending’ tricks to help wandering spirits find their way.”
I said, “That Red-Dressed Woman, she’s not just any spirit. She’s a vengeful ghost, and even she was afraid of you.”
The old man shook his head, “She’s not afraid of me; she’s afraid I might harm her child.”
Her child?
“Ghosts have children?”
The old man didn’t reply, just looked at me, sighing:
“You’re covered in Yin Energy, it seems she has truly set her sights on you.”
I gave a wry smile, “I have no quarrel with her, can’t understand why she would target me.”
The old man mounted his tricycle, looking ready to leave.
Fortunately, he didn’t intend to leave me behind.
Instead, he gestured towards the space behind his tricycle, “Hop on, let’s talk at my place.”
