- Chapter 86 - Trouble at Home, Song Yu Deceives Bai Yu
With cameras installed in the bedroom, the only way to speak privately with Aunt Zhang was in the en-suite bathroom. So, I timed it perfectly, making loud retching noises as she entered to deliver my meal, hoping to lure her into the bathroom.
Sure enough, Aunt Zhang heard the noise, hurriedly put down the food, and rushed into the bathroom. As soon as she stepped inside, I swiftly shut the door behind her, blocking the exit with my body.
Aunt Zhang was momentarily stunned, then her expression turned wary. “Mr. Bai, what are you doing?”
I exhaled deeply and then dropped to my knees.
Aunt Zhang was taken aback, quickly moving to help me up. “Mr. Bai, what are you doing? You shouldn’t kneel to me. Please, stand up.”
I held onto her hand, shaking my head, refusing to rise. “Aunt Zhang, I beg you, please help me leave this place.”
“I can’t stay here another day. I’m going crazy. Please, have mercy on me, help me get out of here, I beg you.”
All the pent-up emotions from the past days erupted at that moment. Aunt Zhang was like my lifeline, the last hope I had to escape. I clung to her desperately, unwilling to let go.
Aunt Zhang looked troubled, sighing, “Mr. Bai, it’s President Song’s decision to keep you here. I can’t overrule him. Please, get up; the floor is cold.”
“No, Aunt Zhang, you don’t need to make decisions. Just give me your phone. If I can contact my family and friends, I can leave.”
Aunt Zhang’s face changed at once. “I can’t do that. If President Song finds out I let you use a phone, he’ll be furious. It’s not possible.”
“Aunt Zhang, I beg you, have pity on me. I don’t know if you have children, but if your child were locked up, how would you feel?”
“My parents haven’t heard from me for days; they must be worried sick. Please, I just want to call them to let them know I’m safe. You can watch me; I won’t say anything else.”
Aunt Zhang sighed heavily but remained silent.
“Aunt Zhang, please, I’ll even bow to you.” I said, moving to lower my head to the ground.
“Oh dear, you’re putting me in a difficult position!” Aunt Zhang bent down to stop me.
I grasped her hand tightly, pleading, “Aunt Zhang, I beg you, I won’t tell Song Yu it was you who gave me the phone. Please help me just this once.”
“Mr. Bai, it’s not that I don’t want to help, but I really can’t. President Song specifically instructed everyone in this house not to give you a phone. I truly can’t do it.”
“Besides, you haven’t been mistreated here. President Song treats you well, providing the best food, clothing, and care. Why are you so determined to leave?” Aunt Zhang seemed puzzled, her tone suggesting she thought I was being unreasonable.
It appeared Song Yu had brainwashed everyone in this house, making them believe keeping me here was perfectly fine.
If that’s the case, no matter how much I negotiate with Aunt Zhang, I won’t get a phone. After much thought, I realized I had no choice but to resort to force, even though I didn’t want to. But I was out of options.
“Aunt Zhang, if you don’t give me the phone, I won’t let you leave. I don’t want to hurt you, so I hope you’ll hand over the phone.” I stood up, my expression dark and determined.
“What are you going to do? You can’t act recklessly. This is President Song’s villa, and there are bodyguards outside…” Aunt Zhang retreated a few steps, keeping a safe distance from me.
“What can the bodyguards do? In this bathroom, who would know what happens to you?” I pulled out a rope I had hidden at my waist, made from torn bed sheets twisted into a sturdy cord.
Seeing that I was serious, Aunt Zhang opened her mouth to call for the bodyguards. I quickly grabbed a towel and stuffed it into her mouth, then used the rope to tie her hands and secure her to the shower rod. Aunt Zhang was older and a woman, so it wasn’t difficult to restrain her.
This was the first time I had done something like this, and I was terrified. My hands shook as I tied the rope, tears streaming uncontrollably down my face.
“I’m sorry, Aunt Zhang, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I’m just desperate…”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I just want to leave here, I’m sorry…” I felt like a terrible person, a monster, for doing this. But I had no other choice. I apologized through my tears as I finished tying her up, then started searching for her phone, finally finding it in the pocket of her apron.
Aunt Zhang, with the towel in her mouth, could only make muffled sounds, clearly frightened.
Holding the phone, I quickly dialed a number while trying to reassure her, “It’ll be over soon. I’ll let you go after I make this call. It’s okay, I won’t hurt you. I just need to make a call.”
I didn’t call my family or the police; instead, I called Chi Jin. Only Chi Jin could get me out of here; I couldn’t even count on the police.
However, the call went unanswered for quite some time. Could it be that Chi Jin hadn’t returned to the country yet?
That shouldn’t be the case. He had said he’d be back soon after the New Year, and it had already been half a month. He should have returned by now.
Just when I thought no one would answer, Chi Jin’s voice finally came through, though it sounded weary and hoarse.
“Hello, who is this?”
My heart leaped with joy, and I nearly cried out in relief, “Chi Jin, it’s me, Bai Yu!”
Upon hearing my voice, the excitement on the other end was palpable. “Is it really you!? Bai Yu, where have you been? I haven’t been able to reach you for so many days. Your family is going crazy looking for you, almost to the point of calling the police.”
“Oh, it’s a long story. Just come and get me quickly. I’ve been trapped in Song Yu’s villa for ten days. He’s planning to take me to M Country. Hurry and save me, or I won’t be able to leave.”
“What did you say? You’ve been locked up by Song Yu?”
“Yes, he confined me the day I returned to Hai City, and took my phone. I only managed to contact you by taking someone else’s phone. Please, come quickly with help.”
“Song Yu, that bastard! Your sister was assaulted, your dad died in a shipwreck, and he still has you locked up. He’s not even human!”
“What… what are you saying? My dad… my sister… what happened to them?”
Chi Jin’s voice was filled with frustration on the other end, “I only found out yesterday. I’ve been trying to reach you since I got back, but couldn’t get through. I finally managed to contact your family, and that’s when I learned about your dad and sister…”
His words felt like they were draining the life out of me, leaving my heart cold and numb. I couldn’t believe it, refused to believe it. Just before the New Year, my dad and sister were fine. How could things go so wrong in just a few days?
It couldn’t be true. Chi Jin must have gotten it wrong.
I quickly hung up and called my mom.
She answered almost immediately, her voice hoarse and laced with tears, “Hello, who is this?”
Hearing her sobs, my grip on the phone tightened, my heart aching with every beat.
“Mom, it’s me.”
She paused for a moment, then cried out in anguish, “You little brat! Where have you been? Do you know what happened to your dad and sister?”
Her words broke off into sobs.
“Mom, don’t cry. What happened to Dad? What about Fei? Tell me what’s going on!” I shouted into the phone, desperate for answers as my mom’s silence and tears tore at my soul.
“Your dad… sob…”
“Mom, please don’t cry. You’re killing me here! What about Fei? Can she talk?”
“Your sister… sob… sob…”
“She was harmed… sob… sob… It’s all my fault… I didn’t keep an eye on her… sob… Your dad went out with the fishing crew… sob… I tried to reach you, but your phone was off, so I had to tell your dad… and he…”
“Sob… sob… He tried to sail back alone on a small boat, hit a reef, and it sank… We haven’t found him yet… sob… The rescue team says it’s unlikely he’ll survive…”
“You little brat, where have you been all this time? Huh? Sob… sob… Leaving the family to fend for itself… sob… Fei’s mental state is bad too, she screams at the slightest touch… cries when she sees people…”
“Sob… sob… The doctor says the trauma might have scared her senseless…”
“Sob… sob… What am I going to do? Sob… Son, please come home…”
“Mom, don’t cry. Dad knows the sea well, he’ll be okay. Mom…” I started crying too, knowing deep down these were just comforting lies.
In the winter sea, surviving even a few hours is a miracle, let alone days. I knew it, and my mom knew it too. But I clung to a shred of hope, trying to console her, because there was nothing else I could do.
“Son, where have you been all these days? Sob… Are you still working for that boss? Sob… Your dad used to praise him so much, saying how good he was, but now…”
I caught the implication in her words and quickly asked, “What happened? Mom, tell me!”
“The police caught the thugs who hurt your sister. They’re all Jin Sheng’s men.”
I had suspected as much. Fei was always quiet and kept to herself, staying at school. It was unlikely she’d be targeted by outsiders unless someone deliberately sought her out.
And those who held a grudge against my family, besides those my dad had managed to send away before the New Year, there was no one else I could think of.
Furious, I slammed my fist onto the tile floor, gritting my teeth, “Those bastards, scum, they’ll get what’s coming to them.”
“Later, I found out why those people kept targeting our family. It turns out that your President Song claimed it was his friend’s company, but it was actually his own.”
“He promised a compensation of ten million to that company but never delivered, and even reported them for extortion. The company’s boss, in a fit of rage, sought out Fei, and those scoundrels…”
“I panicked at the time, sobbing… I wanted to find you but couldn’t reach you, and then your dad’s incident happened… sobbing… We don’t even know if he’s alive or dead now… sobbing…”
“Why did our family have to face such misfortune? It’s like we’re cursed, unable to enjoy the good burial ground. Your boss… sobbing… he’s brought us nothing but suffering…”
“If only we had buried your grandfather anywhere else, instead of fighting for that… sobbing…”
Listening to my mom’s words, my heart sank, and the hatred within me multiplied, bursting forth from my body.
Song Yu, why did you deceive me?
If it weren’t for his initial promise to help me, none of this would have happened. Even when he visited during the New Year, he pretended it was his friend’s company.
Scoff, I was foolish, unable to see through it. Deer Skull Cliff, with such a vast coastline, a multi-billion yuan project, how could it suddenly have someone take over overnight?
Who else could it be but him?
He didn’t give the compensation of ten million to those people, causing them to repeatedly come to our house and create trouble.
Am I really not worth that ten million?
Is this what he meant by giving me the best?
My sister suffered such a tragedy, and my father… and yet he still has the audacity to keep me trapped here, forcing me into his embrace day and night.
Ha, I’m truly the biggest fool in the world.
Song Yu, you’ve deceived me so bitterly.
My heart twisted with pain, so intense it was hard to breathe, tears soaking my cheeks.
Song Yu, why do you treat me this way?
You claim to care for me, yet you abandon my family in their time of need.
What does it mean to truly care?
“Son, are you listening? Please come home, I really have no one to rely on,” my mom sobbed uncontrollably on the other end.
“Mom, don’t worry. Dad will be okay, and Fei won’t suffer in vain. I will avenge them.”
“Son, what are you planning? Son, don’t-”
Before my mom could finish, I hung up the phone.
Aunt Zhang sat nearby, no longer struggling, just quietly watching me.
She must have heard my conversation with my mom clearly; the volume of the old phone was akin to a speaker.
I slumped against the bathtub, biting my fist and sobbing, then slapped my face hard, again and again.
The pain on my face was nothing compared to the ache in my heart.
Regret and hatred intertwined, as if they were trying to kill me.
I’ve never done anything evil in my life, so why does fate treat me this way? Why does it punish my family?
And why did I have to meet Song Yu, get entangled with him? If I hadn’t met him, I might still be working at the bar, Lu wouldn’t have died, my sister wouldn’t have been harmed, and my father wouldn’t have faced a maritime disaster.
It’s Song Yu, all because of him.
I hate him, I want to kill him.
I stood up, numb, and walked over to Aunt Zhang, untying her ropes: “Don’t be afraid, I’ll talk to Song Yu myself. You can leave.”
Aunt Zhang stood there, her face full of concern: “Mr. Bai, about your family’s situation… I don’t think President Song is like that, there must be some misunderstanding.”
I looked at Aunt Zhang with a bitter smile: “Misunderstanding? My dad is dead, my sister was… and you tell me it’s a misunderstanding? Scoff…”
“Mr. Bai… perhaps you…”
“Leave!” I shouted.
