After I Was Gone, Mr. Song Said He Loved Me - Chapter 73 - Revenge
Lu’s departure plunged me into immense pain and grief, especially knowing who the instigator was, yet being unable to bring him to justice intensified my hatred to the core, as if every organ in my body was set aflame.
At this time, Chi Jin’s assistance was like a timely rain for me.
But I was aware that Chi Jin’s intentions weren’t genuine. He merely wanted to use me to target Song Yu.
Having been in this circle for a while, I understood that in the world of the wealthy, nothing is given without a reason. Hence, I always kept my distance from Chi Jin, wary of getting too close.
But now, things were different. I just wanted Song Yu dead.
Joining forces with Chi Jin seemed like the best option, as two heads are better than one.
“I know you wouldn’t help me without a reason, so what do you want me to do for you?” I asked Chi Jin, looking him squarely in the eyes.
Chi Jin met my gaze and smiled gently, “Don’t be nervous, I won’t ask you to do anything illegal.”
“I just want to target Song Yu, nothing else.”
I had learned to state my position clearly in advance, not giving others the chance to manipulate me.
“I’ll help you target Song Yu, but you have to listen to me. You can’t act rashly, and you definitely can’t confront Song Yu directly!”
I became impatient, my voice rising several octaves, “What do you mean I can’t confront Song Yu? Lu is dead, and I don’t even know where his remains are buried. How can I possibly not be impulsive? Are you suggesting I do nothing and just wait for divine intervention?”
Chi Jin pursed his lips, giving me a pointed look as if disappointed, “Think about what Song Yu cares about the most.”
I paused for a moment, wondering what Song Yu valued most.
Ever since I met Song Yu, he had been tirelessly working, accumulating wealth, and solidifying his position at Huanya.
So-
“He loves money, he loves power.”
“Then make him lose what he cherishes most-money and power. A person only truly suffers when they lose what is most precious to them. Imagine the agony of seeing all his carefully laid plans come to nothing. With Song Yu’s proud and arrogant nature, it would be a fate worse than death. This is the best form of revenge, far more effective than any physical altercation.”
I mulled over Chi Jin’s words, sinking into deep thought.
Indeed, for someone like Song Yu, who had long stood at the pinnacle, only by pulling him down from his high cloud could he truly feel the impact of loss.
With that thought, a rush of vindictive pleasure surged through my chest.
“So, what should I do?”
Chi Jin sneered, “Song Yu has an account book, a ledger of under-the-table dealings he conducted in M Country using his position as the chief operating officer of Huanya. It contains names of many high-ranking officials, which is why people in M Country protect him. If I get that book and hand it over to the International Trade Organization, he’s finished.”
“How did you know about this? How could Song Yu let such critical information get out?”
“This is what my father told me. Originally, Song Yu managed to secure local officials’ support with this very thing, which is why he was so fearless at Huanya. Even after my father discovered that he had colluded with other shareholders to seize control of Huanya, he couldn’t do much except freeze his stock transactions for six months. If my father couldn’t provide more compelling evidence during that period, Song Yu’s shares would remain protected.”
“I don’t understand why those officials would help Song Yu? Isn’t your father the chairman of Huanya?”
Chi Jin scoffed disdainfully, “Song Yu likes to play dirty. He keeps people like you around to seduce local businessmen and high-ranking officials, engage in promiscuity, drug them, and then use that to blackmail them into joining his side.”
“Some did it to cover up scandals, others for personal gain. They all sided with Song Yu. At the last shareholders’ meeting, all the shareholders who were friendly with my father switched allegiance to Song Yu. My father was so enraged that he had a stroke right there.”
“Fortunately, he had mortgaged all his shares to a Swiss bank early enough to just about maintain his holdings from being swallowed by Song Yu, but the Swiss bank could only guarantee a public notice period of one year.”
“Once that time is up, my father’s shares will revert to his name. By then, if Song Yu’s 40% share is unfrozen early and he allies with other shareholders, Huanya could really change hands.”
“So if you can get your hands on the account book from Song Yu, I’ll have a way to bring him down. Then it’ll be him going to jail.”
“You mean you want me to stay close to Song Yu?” My gaze instantly turned cold.
“As of now, that’s the best plan I can think of,” Chi Jin admitted frankly.
“No way, I want to kill Song Yu whenever I see him now. How could I possibly continue to charm and please him? That’s absolutely impossible.” I refused without a second thought.
Just then, the elevator doors opened on the twenty-sixth floor, triggered by other colleagues.
I pushed past Chi Jin, intent on confronting Song Yu, my only desire to unleash my fury with my fists, caring nothing for that damned account book.
Chi Jin grabbed my arm and yanked me back, then glowered at the few people at the doorway, intimidating them into nodding and smiling apologetically as they closed the door.
“Chi Jin, let go of me!” I pounded his hand furiously, threatening loudly, “If you don’t let go now, I’ll really start being rough with you.”
Though I might not necessarily beat Chi Jin since we’re both men, it wasn’t clear who would win if it really came to blows.
“We agreed on this just now, why are you backing out?” Chi Jin clutched my hand tightly, his forehead beading with sweat.
“How can I continue to play along with him when I see Song Yu and just want to kill him? How can I possibly go after that account book?”
“Instead of wasting time dealing with him, it would be quicker to just confront him openly.”
I acknowledged that Chi Jin’s analysis was sound and knew that following his plan could severely cripple Song Yu, but continuing to ingratiate myself with him was beyond me.
Thinking of Lu’s despair in his final moments, I wished I could tear Song Yu apart.
How could I possibly stay by his side?
“Fine, I’m not stopping you. Go ahead, and let Song Yu get you locked up for ten or twenty years. Will that bring your friend back to life? Not only will there be no one to clear your friend’s name, but even your family will be dragged into this.”
“Song Yu is ruthless. If he could harm your friend, do you think he’d spare you?”
“I admit I have my own motives. Song Yu stole the fruits of my father’s lifelong labor, and I can’t stand seeing him live smoothly like a thief. You’re the same; your friend is gone, and that’s a fact. You still have family. If we can’t strike Song Yu down in one blow, your family will be in danger.”
“If you don’t care about what I’m saying, then go ahead. I’m not stopping you.” Chi Jin stepped aside, leaving a path open.
Listening to Chi Jin, I hesitated.
He’s right. I still have family. Lu is gone, and I need to think about my parents and sister.
If I really provoke Song Yu, who knows what terrible things he might do.
Seeing me stop struggling, Chi Jin gripped my shoulders and spoke earnestly, “Bai Yu, calm down. Our goal is to completely crush Song Yu, not to make pointless sacrifices, understand?”
“But I’m afraid…” I bit my lower lip, hesitating. Song Yu is cunning; how could he let me know where such an important thing is?
“What are you afraid of?”
“I’m afraid I won’t be able to get that account book you mentioned. It’s so important, Song Yu wouldn’t just leave it out in the open.”
“That’s why you need to stay by his side and look for clues. Besides Luo Yewen, you’re the closest to him now. Staying by his side will give you a chance.”
My emotions had calmed down a bit, allowing me to think through Chi Jin’s words.
He spoke logically, hitting every point that mattered to me, as if he had planned this for a long time.
“Chi Jin, have you been waiting for me to fall out with Song Yu so you could use it to your advantage?” I stared at him intently.
“Yes!” Chi Jin answered without hesitation. “In fact, I expected this day would come between you and Song Yu.”
I frowned slightly, a hint of wariness in my expression.
“But I’m not using you; I’m helping you, Bai Yu. Without me, you wouldn’t be able to avenge your friend. I said before that we’re partners. Helping me is helping yourself.”
“This deal is not a loss for you.”
Chi Jin was very frank about his intentions, and I knew he was using me. But I had no other choice; Song Yu was too dangerous. A small mistake could implicate my family.
The worst part is, I’ve even taken him to my hometown. Looking back, I was unbelievably foolish.
If my actions end up harming my parents and sister, dying a thousand times wouldn’t be enough to repay them.
But I can’t ignore what happened to Lu. After thinking it over, the only option is to follow Chi Jin’s plan, stay by Song Yu’s side, find that account book, and then get this scumbag locked up.
“Alright, I agree.”
Ding-
The elevator stopped again, showing the thirty-third floor, the president’s office area.
I looked up, already planning how to face Song Yu next.
Just as I was about to step out, Chi Jin suddenly reached out to stop me.
“Bai Yu!”
I turned to look at him, puzzled.
He moved his lips, exhaling slightly, “If it doesn’t work, don’t force it.”
I paused, then smiled wryly, “I have no choice.”
With that, I brushed aside Chi Jin’s hand and left the elevator, heading straight for Song Yu’s office…
