- Chapter 56 - Once Again, I Bowed My Head in Humble Plea...
Upon reaching the second floor, I searched through the offices along the corridor until I spotted the yellow metal plaque on the door of the innermost office, indicating it was the director’s room.
The door was open, and before I got close, I heard Song Yu chatting with another man. With a nervous heart, I stepped forward and knocked three times on the door.
“Come in,” the man called out loudly.
I took a deep breath, stepped into the office, and immediately saw Song Yu sitting on a leather sofa, sipping tea.
“Who are you looking for?” the man asked sternly.
I swallowed hard, my gaze shifting to Song Yu’s direction, and murmured, “President Song.”
Upon realizing I was there for Song Yu, the man’s expression changed instantly. He gestured to a nearby sofa and smiled, “Oh, a friend of President Song, please have a seat.”
Despite his invitation, Song Yu hadn’t spoken yet, so I dared not move.
Finally, Song Yu finished his tea. He slowly lifted his head and smiled, nodding towards me, “Come over.”
I obediently went over and sat beside him.
“What brings you up here?” Song Yu asked with a smile.
“President Song, I want to beg you to save Lu,” I pleaded, my voice choked with emotion.
Song Yu sighed, looking troubled, “I’m discussing this with Director Wang right now. It’s not that I don’t want to help; it’s that I can’t.”
“What do you mean?… What do you mean you can’t save him? Didn’t you say you could?” My voice betrayed my growing anxiety, my features twisting with desperation.
“Lu’s situation is beyond my control now; it’s the prosecution that wants to file charges.”
The mention of filing charges hit me like a bombshell. How could it happen so quickly? Just a few hours, and no investigation needed?
“But… but you’re the victim, and you weren’t seriously hurt. Why… why file charges?”
At this point, the director, who had been sitting behind the desk, spoke up, “Fan Lu’s motive and method in this case are indisputable, and he has confessed to his actions. The case has been entered into the public security system, which is an unchangeable fact.”
“We can only consider the social harm caused when determining the sentence length. President Song is discussing this matter with me.”
My throat felt parched, my voice dry and rough, “So… there’s really no way?”
Song Yu set down his teacup, looking troubled, “Some things can’t be changed by human intervention.” As he spoke, his left hand gently rubbed the bandage on his right hand. I hadn’t looked closely before, but now, at this close distance, I could see the wound stretched across his entire palm, the white bandage stained a deep red.
Had he not gone to the hospital for treatment? Just wrapped it to stop the bleeding?
“Is your hand… okay?” I couldn’t help but ask.
Song Yu chuckled indifferently, “It’s fine, just a bit inconvenient for daily life.”
I nodded, pleading with Song Yu once more, “President Song, is there really no way? Lu didn’t mean it; he lost his mind because of me.”
The director took my words and pointed at the computer, sternly saying, “Take a look at this. It’s the surveillance footage of the entire incident.”
I immediately stood up and walked over. The director adjusted the computer screen so I could see the footage more clearly.
The scene in the video was at 1:07 a.m. in Huanya’s underground parking garage. Song Yu was rummaging through the car’s trunk when suddenly, a man wearing a baseball cap appeared in the corner of the screen, stealthily approaching Song Yu from behind. The man then pulled out a knife from his pocket. Just as the knife was about to strike, Song Yu closed the trunk and turned around, instinctively grabbing the sharp blade with his hand.
The two were locked in a tense struggle for a moment before Song Yu managed to disarm Lu, taking the knife from his hand. Luo Yewen hurriedly arrived and joined the scuffle.
In a matter of minutes, Lu was pinned to the ground by the two of them…
Although I had imagined what this scene might look like, seeing it with my own eyes made my heart race with fear. Thankfully, Song Yu intervened, preventing Lu from causing irreversible damage.
“Director, my friend… he acted on impulse, which led to this foolish act. President Song only injured his hand; his life wasn’t at risk. Could you please give him another chance? I’m begging you…” I pleaded earnestly, trying my best to persuade the director to show leniency towards Lu.
The director glanced at me and then pulled up several more video clips, scolding, “Impulse? Look at this person appearing in the underground garage for several consecutive days. When President Song’s car left, he left too. He figured out that President Song would leave the company in the early hours, so he chose that time to commit the crime. This was clearly premeditated, and you’re defending him?”
“If people like this aren’t controlled and educated, do you know how much harm they could cause to society?”
I watched the footage showing Lu appearing in the same place every day, always wearing a hat, and leaving only after Song Yu’s car departed. It was hard not to question Lu’s motives.
Faced with irrefutable evidence, I was speechless.
The director turned off the video, his expression cold and stern. “This kind of direct crime doesn’t require any defense. The police can proceed with arrest.”
“However, considering President Song’s desire for reconciliation, the only thing we can do is to be lenient with the sentencing.”
“How long will Lu be sentenced?” I asked, my voice trembling.
“One to three years, depending on the court’s decision. Given President Song’s intention to reconcile, the court might grant a suspended sentence. However, he can’t stay in Hai City; he’ll have to return to his hometown to serve it.”
Upon hearing the director’s words, I felt a heavy weight on my shoulders, and my body slumped.
One to three years, returning to his hometown to serve?
Lu’s life would be over…
I couldn’t quite recall how I left the detention center with Song Yu. All I knew was that my feet felt light, and my mind was swirling with the director’s words, each thought piercing my heart deeper, each moment growing more sorrowful, tears welling up in my eyes.
As soon as I got into the car, I couldn’t hold back any longer and burst into tears.
Grabbing Song Yu’s sleeve, I choked out, “Is there really no way?”
“There isn’t.”
“But… but you promised me at the hospital that you’d save Lu.” I knew my words were unreasonable, but I couldn’t give up hope.
I always believed that if Song Yu wanted something, there was nothing he couldn’t achieve.
Moreover, there was something strange about Lu’s situation that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
The president’s parking area at Huanya Building is directly accessible by elevator and separate from the employee parking area, with several security guards on duty 24/7. How did Lu manage to sneak into Song Yu’s parking spot several days in a row?
And Luo Yewen was always by Song Yu’s side, never leaving him alone. How did it happen that Lu found Song Yu alone at the exact moment he planned to act?
Furthermore, considering their size and weight difference, Lu was only about 180 cm tall, with a similar build to mine-slim and not much muscle. Song Yu was 192 cm tall, regularly trained with heavy equipment, and though his clothes hid it, his muscles were intimidating. He could hold me in his arms during exercise for an hour without breaking a sweat.
How did someone like him end up at a disadvantage against Lu in the video, needing Luo Yewen’s help?
Was it just because Lu had a fruit knife?
Despite the questions swirling in my head, Lu did raise the knife, and Song Yu was indeed injured.
The surveillance footage was crystal clear.
“Is there something I’m not doing right, or is there someone else you want me to accompany? Just say it, and I’ll do it.” I took Song Yu’s hand and rubbed it against my cheek, my eyes shimmering with pitiful tears, trying to charm him into remembering my worth.
I was willing to sacrifice my dignity for Lu’s freedom.
Song Yu’s expression was terrifyingly cold, his indifferent eyes shrouded in an impenetrable layer of ice.
He stared at me for a long while, then calmly withdrew his hand, “You’re not important enough for me to break the law to help him.”
My expression froze, my hand and heart simultaneously empty.
Yet, in that instant, I caught another meaning in Song Yu’s words: ‘break the law-to help him’?
So Song Yu could save Lu, but he chose not to.
“So, you do have a way to get Lu out, you just don’t want to do it, right?” I stared intently at Song Yu, trying to catch any hint on his face.
Song Yu smiled faintly, admitting, “What I choose to do depends on whether the reward is worth the cost. Unfortunately, Bai Yu, your value to me only gets you this far.”
“Then why did you promise at the hospital to save Lu? Why did you act so troubled in front of the police?”
Song Yu frowned slightly, seemingly puzzled, “Bai Yu, you can’t be too greedy. I’ve already done what I promised. Given his motives, he wouldn’t get out in less than five to eight years. Now it’s only three years, with a suspended sentence back home. What more do you want?”
“You should be grateful you still have some value to me, or Fan Lu’s fate would be a thousand times worse.”
Song Yu’s final words sent a shiver through me, instantly calming my impulsive emotions.
I knew Song Yu wasn’t joking; he could save Lu just as easily as he could push him into despair.
Since there was still a glimmer of hope in his words, it meant Lu’s situation wasn’t entirely settled yet. Confronting him head-on would do no good.
In the end, my reason overcame my pride, and I lowered my head, pretending to be sincere as I said, “I’m sorry, President Song, I acted impulsively.”
