- Chapter 48 - Song Yu Threatens Me, Takes Me Into the Car...
Officer Lu was the chief detective who initially handled the case involving Wang Li’an and me. Why would he suddenly call me now?
Afraid that Chi Jin might overhear, I quickly lowered the volume on my phone and tried to sound calm, “Please go ahead.”
Chi Jin glanced at me from the corner of his eye but focused on driving.
Officer Lu said, “It’s nothing major, just need you to come to the police station. There are some details about Wang Li’an’s case that need your confirmation. If everything’s correct, just sign off.”
Although I rarely dealt with the police, I wasn’t naive. It’s been over a month since Wang Li’an’s incident, and for them to call me this late asking me to go to the station, it was definitely more than just signing a paper.
“Do I… need to go now?” I glanced at the car’s digital clock; it was already past 10 PM.
“As soon as possible. We need to verify things first thing in the morning.”
After hesitating for a moment, I cautiously asked, “Can I ask what details it’s about?”
“Just come over. Stop with the questions. If we’re calling you, there’s a reason.” The voice on the other end sounded impatient.
After being scolded, I didn’t dare ask more, stammering, “…Okay, okay, I’ll… I’ll head over right away.”
Officer Lu hung up without further explanation.
I slowly lowered my hand, my mind a chaotic mess. Although I didn’t know the specifics of why Officer Lu wanted to see me, his tone suggested it wasn’t trivial. Song Yu had assured me earlier that everything with the police was taken care of, and I didn’t need to worry. So why was I suddenly being asked to sign something now?
Chi Jin noticed my pale face and asked, “What’s wrong?”
I snapped back to reality and smiled to cover up, “Oh, nothing.”
Chi Jin gave me another look, seemingly assessing whether I was being truthful.
I forced a wider smile, trying to appear normal, repeating, “Really, it’s nothing.”
Seeing me say that, Chi Jin didn’t press further and continued driving.
When we arrived at the hotpot restaurant, I quickly unbuckled my seatbelt and rushed out of the car towards Song Yu and Nian Hua’s vehicle. They both stepped out as well.
“President Song!” I called out urgently.
Song Yu and Nian Hua turned to look at me.
I jogged over, swallowing nervously, and said to Song Yu, “I need to talk to you.”
Song Yu looked at me expressionlessly, “Since you’ve decided not to be my personal public relations anymore, there’s no need to discuss your matters with me.” With that, he motioned for Nian Hua to head into the restaurant.
I quickly followed, blocking his path, and pleaded, “President Song, I beg you, I need your help.”
Nian Hua glanced at me, her expression cold, clearly displeased with my persistent pursuit of Song Yu.
But I couldn’t care less. Although Wang Li’an’s imprisonment was certain, he was still a significant figure, entangled in numerous affairs. As a key witness on the day of the incident, who knows what else he might fabricate later?
Thus, I could only turn to Song Yu for help, because besides me and Wang Li’an, he was the one who knew exactly what happened that day.
Song Yu let out a cold chuckle, his words even icier than his smile. “I once said I wouldn’t waste my time on strangers. This is your choice.”
With that, Song Yu brushed past me, leaving me standing there, feeling a chill creeping up from my feet.
Those were the same words he had said to me when I resigned at the hospital. It seemed like a déjà vu.
Suddenly, it dawned on me that Song Yu was using Wang Li’an’s case to warn me. If I left him, I could be summoned by the police at any moment.
Just then, Chi Jin caught up and asked, “What’s going on? Why the rush? What happened?”
I didn’t have time to explain to him. I quickly caught up with Song Yu and grabbed his wrist to stop him.
Song Yu turned around, looking down at my hand clutching his wrist. I hurriedly let go and awkwardly said, “President Song, I’m sorry. I… I beg you… please help me one more time.”
“Heh, why should I help you?” Song Yu laughed, his sharp black eyes narrowing behind his glasses, devoid of any kindness.
“Because… because… I’m your personal public relations.” After catching my breath, I bit my lip and said it.
Song Yu chuckled, as if he had anticipated this outcome.
At this moment, Chi Jin came over, pulling me aside with a frown. “What are you talking about? What’s really going on? You just said…”
I shook off Chi Jin’s hand, took off the crystal crown from my head, and handed it to him, apologizing, “I’m sorry, Mr. Chi. I have something urgent that needs President Song’s help. I might… not be able to join you for hotpot.”
Nian Hua clutched Song Yu’s sleeve, looking anxious. “Yu, what’s going on? Is it serious? Should I come with you?”
“Oh, no, no, it’s fine with just President Song,” I quickly waved my hand to refuse.
Song Yu gave Nian Hua a gentle smile. “It’s nothing, don’t worry.” Then he turned his gaze to me, speaking with a hint of implication, “We’re just going to sign a paper. We’ll be back soon.”
I stared at Song Yu in shock, feeling a chill run through me, raising the hairs on my skin.
It had to be his doing. Otherwise, how would he know Officer Lu wanted me to go to the police station to sign something?
Nian Hua still seemed uneasy and asked again, “Are you sure it’s nothing? Maybe Mr. Chi should go with you.”
Chi Jin ignored Nian Hua and pulled me aside, whispering, “Tell me, what’s really going on? Is Song Yu up to something again?”
I glanced at Song Yu from the corner of my eye. His face maintained a polite and gentle smile, but I could still see the confidence and absolute control hidden behind it.
He knew I didn’t dare to oppose him, and he knew I wouldn’t dare to be honest with Chi Jin. Because in this matter, apart from him, I had no other witness to prove my innocence.
Song Yu was indeed a master manipulator. He had set traps all around me, forcing me to follow his plan with every step. If I disobeyed or defied him, I would fall into an abyss with no return.
Just like today, as soon as I suggested ending our ambiguous relationship, I received a call from the police station.
It was a blatant warning.
“It’s nothing, Mr. Chi, just some personal matters,” I tried to sound casual, not wanting Chi Jin to get suspicious.
“Are you sure there’s nothing wrong?” Chi Jin didn’t seem convinced. “You can tell me. I’ll help you.”
“Really, it’s nothing!” I said, pushing Chi Jin away and heading towards Song Yu. If I stayed any longer, I wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret.
Song Yu had just reassured Nian Hua and was returning to his car. He got into the driver’s seat, and I followed, opening the back door and sliding in.
As soon as the door closed, Song Yu started the car, and the Rolls-Royce surged onto the road.
In the back, I was nervously twisting my fingers, my palms never drying from sweat.
Finally, I couldn’t hold it in any longer and blurted out, “Officer Lu asked me to go to the police station. Does it have anything to do with you?”
“Yes!” Song Yu replied without a moment’s hesitation.
My heart clenched, and I shouted in anger, “Why would you do that? You know I’m innocent, so why use this to threaten me?”
Song Yu turned the steering wheel to the right, pulling the car into a temporary parking spot by the roadside.
“You say I’m threatening you?” Song Yu removed his glasses, his sharp eyes locking onto me in the rearview mirror.
“What else could it be? You know I can’t prove my innocence, I’m scared my parents will find out, terrified of going to jail, and yet you use this to force me. Isn’t that a threat?”
I was so angry that I was speaking without thinking, not noticing the increasingly dangerous look in Song Yu’s eyes.
Song Yu shook his head with a smirk, then opened the car door, got out, and swiftly opened the back door, climbing in and slamming it shut, locking it in one smooth motion.
The series of sounds made my heart race, and I instinctively moved to the other side, watching him warily.
“President Song… aren’t we going to the police station?” I realized I might have messed up and tried to change the subject, feigning calmness.
“Bai Yu, do you know what a threat is?” Song Yu asked, amused.
I bit my lip, staying silent.
Song Yu sighed, looking somewhat helpless. “Bai Yu, everyone has to take responsibility for their actions. Being reckless has its price, understand?”
“I don’t like threatening others, nor do I like being threatened.”
“Since you unilaterally broke our work relationship without my consent, you have to bear the consequences.”
With that, Song Yu took out his phone and dialed Officer Lu right in front of me. The call was answered almost immediately.
“President Song,” Officer Lu greeted respectfully.
My breath caught, and a bad feeling crept in.
Could Officer Lu be in cahoots with Song Yu?
Wouldn’t that mean Song Yu could say whatever he wanted?
Song Yu, seeing my shocked expression, chuckled. “Officer Lu, about the Wang Li’an case, I might have some evidence that… mmph…”
Before he could finish, I lunged forward, pressing my lips against his to stop him.
“Hello? Hello? President Song? Hello?” Officer Lu’s voice kept calling out from the phone.
“Song Yu, please, I’m sorry, I won’t do it again. I won’t dare…”
“Please, I won’t say those things anymore,” I pleaded, tears welling up in my eyes.
My pride bent under the weight of the situation.
I had to admire my own ability to adapt and survive.
Officer Lu’s voice continued to echo from the phone.
I glanced at the phone still connected to the call, then wrapped my arms around Song Yu’s waist, pressing closer, my lips tracing his face in a clumsy attempt to appease him.
Suddenly, I was lifted as Song Yu hoisted me onto his lap…
