- Chapter 34 - I've Fallen for You, So Go Ahead and Fire Me.
Just when I had given up all hope, the door burst open with a loud bang.
Both Wang Li’an and I turned to look at the entrance simultaneously.
It wasn’t like those scenes in novels or dramas where the dashing CEO arrives with bodyguards to rescue the damsel in distress at the last moment. Instead, a group of fierce-looking police officers in uniform stormed in.
Wang Li’an’s hand shook, and the electric baton fell onto the bed. He even forgot to pull up his pants.
Despite his current disheveled state, he still tried to maintain an authoritative demeanor, shouting at the officers, “Which precinct are you from? Who gave you the right to break into a private residence?”
In the past, I used to be somewhat afraid of the police, given the sensitive nature of my work, which could easily land me in trouble for a few days.
But at that moment, seeing them felt like witnessing divine intervention, and I was so overwhelmed that I could barely speak coherently, “Officers… officers, please help me… save me…”
The leading officer, a middle-aged man, glanced at me with utter disdain, “We’ve received reports from the public about illegal activities, including prostitution, taking place here. Please come with us to the station to assist in the investigation.”
My heart sank instantly. They weren’t here to rescue me; they were here to arrest me.
After being tormented by Wang Li’an to this extent, almost losing everything, I ended up being labeled as a male escort.
Wang Li’an’s face turned livid with rage as he hastily pulled up his pants, pointing at the officer and cursing, “Are you blind? Don’t you know who I am?”
The middle-aged officer let out a faint scoff, “Of course, I recognize you, municipal secretary, Mr. Wang.”
With that, he signaled to the younger officers behind him, who immediately moved forward to arrest Wang Li’an. Despite his protests and attempts to resist, he was quickly subdued and handcuffed by the officers.
Due to Wang Li’an’s special status, the police ensured he was properly dressed before escorting him out of the room.
Two officers then came to unlock my handcuffs. I trembled as I explained that I hadn’t engaged in any illicit transactions, and I accused Wang Li’an of drugging me, claiming my innocence.
The officers paid little attention to my words, tossing me a set of clothes from who knows where, and said indifferently, “Whether he drugged you or not will be determined after testing.”
“We’ll also investigate the nature of your relationship. It’s not just about what you say, understand?”
I was too frightened to know what to do, so I just nodded repeatedly in agreement.
“Put on the clothes first,” one officer said, turning away awkwardly.
I looked at the clothes on the bed, carefully picking them up. But every movement pulled at the wound on my chest, causing me to gasp in pain. I dared not make too much noise, forcing myself to endure the searing pain as I put on the clothes. Fortunately, the shirt was loose enough not to rub against the raw skin on my chest.
The two officers escorted me out of the villa, placing Wang Li’an and me in separate police cars.
Because I was injured and needed tests, the police drove me directly to Hai University Hospital. Without alerting anyone, they took me to a private buffer room.
The doctor treated the superficial wounds on my chest, removed the two silver rings, and then conducted blood and urine tests. The results showed a small amount of diethanolamine morphine in my urine.
This is a liquid relaxant popular in foreign nightclubs, often used in illicit sexual encounters. Long-term use can damage muscle fiber tissue, and it’s a banned substance in the country.
Staring at the doctor’s report, I was completely dumbfounded.
“Officer, this has nothing to do with me. Wang Li’an secretly gave it to me. I had no idea. I’m innocent.”
The young officer sitting by my bed, taking my statement, looked up sharply and said coldly, “I’m asking you to recount the events. Why are you telling me this?”
“If we can detain you, it means we have solid evidence. The surveillance footage from Meishan Manor shows you and Wang Li’an leaving the golf course, hugging and all. Now you’re saying you don’t know him well? Who are you trying to fool?”
“Do you know what the penalty is for giving a false statement?”
After hearing the officer’s words, my vision blurred, and my head buzzed. I couldn’t say a word.
When leaving the manor, Wang Li’an insisted on holding me. I resisted, but I didn’t dare offend him, so I put on a smile to avoid him doing anything more excessive.
Now that the police have found out, Wang Li’an will likely pin all the blame on me. With the surveillance evidence, the police definitely won’t believe me. In the end, I might be detained, and my family would be notified.
If my dad finds out I ended up in detention because of this, he’d be furious.
Thinking of this, I couldn’t help but cry, tears falling onto the blanket.
The young officer tapped his notebook with his pen impatiently, “Hey, hey, hey, we’re taking a statement here. Now you know to cry? What were you doing earlier?”
I kept my head down, gripping the sheet tightly, lost in regret and self-blame, not really listening to what the officer was saying.
Suddenly, a tissue appeared in front of me. I hesitated and looked up. Song Yu was standing expressionlessly in front of me, and the officer who was taking my statement had already left.
I was stunned for a few seconds, and then the grievances and anger that had been building up inside me erupted like a volcano.
It was him, the one who abandoned me again, and now he was here pretending to care. What was the point?
Wait-
I hadn’t mentioned Song Yu’s name to the police at all. How did he know to come here? How did he find the buffer room so precisely?
Could it be-
Was he the one who called the police?
If he really did, why didn’t he report it earlier? Why wait until Wang Li’an had tormented me to this extent before calling?
I took the tissue, eyeing Song Yu warily, and stated with certainty, “You’re the one who called the police, aren’t you?”
Song Yu settled into the chair the young officer had vacated, replying calmly, “I did.”
My heart tightened abruptly, forcing myself to maintain composure as I asked, “So you knew all along what Wang Li’an would do to me, didn’t you?”
Otherwise, why would you have alerted the authorities?
Song Yu paused briefly before admitting, “I didn’t expect him to take things so far.”
I felt my entire body trembling, even my teeth chattering.
Two whole hours!
I endured nearly two hours of inhumane torment, only for Song Yu to dismiss it with a mere “I didn’t expect him to take things so far.”
Song Yu continued, “But Wang Li’an won’t have another chance to recover. I’ve had the lawyer present the audio recording of him drugging you at the police station. You’re innocent, rest assured.”
It was then that I fully understood. Song Yu’s plan for me to approach Wang Li’an under the guise of negotiating prices was a ruse; using me as bait in a honey trap to bring Wang Li’an down was the true intention.
“Song Yu, this was all orchestrated by you, wasn’t it? You deliberately left me alone with Wang Li’an, knowing full well he drugged me, yet you didn’t report it immediately. You calculated the timing, waited until you assumed we had been intimate, and then called the police to catch Wang Li’an red-handed, right?”
“As for me, I was merely a tool in your scheme to ruin Wang Li’an, chosen because I’m a nobody from a rural background, incapable of causing much trouble, correct?”
As I spoke, tears streamed down my face, my misty eyes fixed on Song Yu, waiting for his response.
Song Yu met my gaze, his expression as indifferent as ever.
After a long pause, he said, “Yes.”
I stared at his lips, hoping he might say something else, even a hollow comfort would suffice, but as the seconds ticked by, he remained silent.
I clutched my aching chest, letting out a bitter laugh, the sorrow within me threatening to drown me.
At twenty, I finally understood the meaning of “heart-wrenching pain.”
I trusted Song Yu so deeply, almost idolizing him, never daring to hope his light would shine on me, thinking that just being near him would bring warmth.
Yet reality slapped me hard.
“Song Yu, our relationship… ends here.” I lowered my eyes, calmly making this decision.
I admit I liked Song Yu very much, even disregarding the fact that he had someone else in his heart while possessing my body. I just wanted to find a shoulder to lean on in this indifferent metropolis.
But now I realize it was all wishful thinking.
Song Yu’s heart never softened for me.
Even as I stand here, battered and bruised, he feels no hesitation or pity.
I was wrong.
Song Yu listened to my words, then smiled and asked, “What did you just say?”
I knew he heard me clearly; asking again was merely giving me a chance to reconsider.
I lifted my head, my gaze sorrowful as I looked at him, speaking each word deliberately, “I said I’ve fallen for you, just like the previous two public relations, and I can no longer work for you without reservation.”
“So-dismiss me.”
A flicker of surprise crossed Song Yu’s otherwise calm eyes. After a brief silence, he asked, “Are you sure about this?”
I bit my lip, nodding firmly.
Song Yu stood, looking down at me, his tone icy, “Bai Yu, you know I’m not someone who expends effort on useless people or matters. The reason I’m here today, testifying for you, having the lawyer intervene for bail, is because you’re my personal public relations.”
“If we lose this connection, then none of your affairs will concern me, and I won’t interfere in anything related to you.”
“Understand?”
I stared at Song Yu, his face devoid of any emotion, yet his words chilled me to the bone.
I realized he was warning me that if I left him, he wouldn’t testify on my behalf, and I lacked the means to prove my innocence.
The outcome would be inevitable-I would face imprisonment.
