After Divorce, My Ex-Wife Became My Creditor - Chapter 19 - Exchanging Gifts?
The General Affairs Department of Rongyao Group was in an uproar. Every department came up to witness the spectacle, and everyone there resented Han Qian. Meanwhile, Han Qian was strolling through the mall with Wen Nuan, who was dressed in pajamas.
They were undoubtedly the most modestly dressed people in the mall, yet their appearance couldn’t hide the fact that they were a striking couple. Wen Nuan dragged Han Qian through various brand stores, even taking him to look at watches from Vacheron Constantin and Rolex. They tried them on but didn’t buy anything. The salespeople at Rongyao Department Store showed no signs of impatience, providing attentive service.
Wen Nuan was there to stir up trouble, but to her disappointment, the service was impeccable, much better than what Changxiang offered. Han Qian decided enough was enough and led Wen Nuan to the women’s section on the second floor to buy clothes. After all, she couldn’t stay in pajamas forever.
Shopping is the best remedy for women. Wen Nuan’s headache and leg soreness vanished as she wandered through the stores on the second floor. Han Qian spotted a white long-sleeved fairy-style dress. He thought it would look beautiful on Wen Nuan, especially since she had been sick the night before and he hadn’t answered her call. He felt she deserved some comfort and compensation.
“Wen Nuan, what do you think of this dress? Haven’t you always liked white?”
Wen Nuan, who was browsing discounted jeans, turned and pouted.
“It’s not that I like white; it’s you, the neat freak, who likes white.”
Despite her words, Wen Nuan walked over to Han Qian. Her first glance wasn’t at the dress itself; she never focused on any particular piece of clothing. She knew she looked good in anything. Instead, she noticed the price tag.
¥999.
No discount.
Wen Nuan decisively abandoned the idea.
“Not buying it, don’t like it.”
“I’ve never seen you in a dress like this. It would look amazing on you. Just try it on.”
Han Qian encouraged her without a care in the world. Wen Nuan felt a bit emotional, knowing Han Qian only had a little over ¥1,400. This dress would take up two-thirds of that, and she couldn’t bear to spend it.
“Not buying.”
“Miss, your boyfriend has excellent taste. I’m not just talking about the dress but about you. You’re truly stunning, both in terms of elegance and appearance. Your boyfriend is very lucky. He must want to see you in this fairy-style dress. It even has a hint of a wedding dress. I’m not suggesting you buy it, but you should at least try it on. Your boyfriend has been eyeing this dress since he walked in. He must really love you. I’ve seen many couples, and usually, it’s the girl shopping while the guy waits without giving any input.”
“I…”
“Just try it on. It won’t take much time. Consider it a favor for your boyfriend.”
The store clerk’s recommendation made Wen Nuan feel a bit embarrassed to refuse, not because of the clerk but because she didn’t want to turn down Han Qian. Pouting, she reluctantly took the dress and headed to the fitting room. Meanwhile, Han Qian looked at shoes, eventually choosing a pair of canvas shoes. Wen Nuan was tall enough that she didn’t need high heels, which weren’t suitable for shopping anyway, and slippers weren’t appropriate.
After checking out the shoes, Han Qian left the store and, under the watchful eyes of onlookers, walked into a lingerie shop. He returned shortly with a black bag. Despite never having touched her, Han Qian knew Wen Nuan’s size all too well.
Small mangoes.
The store clerk, with a face full of envy, brought the shoes and black bag into the fitting room. Meanwhile, Han Qian started chatting with the other clerks, casually paying for the items and asking whether the store was rented or owned, what the rent was, and if the price varied by location.
“Han Qian…”
Wen Nuan emerged in the white fairy-style dress, looking even more stunning. Han Qian knew Wen Nuan’s at-home look all too well, having seen it for three years, yet he found himself at a loss for words to describe her beauty, only thinking of the phrase “a lotus emerging from water.”
The pleated design of the skirt’s hem concealed her long legs, making her appear even taller. The cinched waist accentuated her slender figure, and the pleats at the chest cleverly hid the small bust.
Han Qian’s gaze lingered for a long time, not because he was dumbfounded, but because he saw it as a recognition and respect for the outfit. He smiled at Wen Nuan.
“Keep it on. I know you look good in anything. I’ve already paid, and they don’t do returns.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Wen Nuan rushed over, pinching and kicking him playfully, but she didn’t mention returning the dress. Han Qian grinned foolishly as Wen Nuan pushed him out of the store, muttering under her breath,
“So expensive, over a thousand bucks, Han Qian.”
“My princess, I only wish to make up for last night’s mistake. Please forgive me.”
Wen Nuan pouted, glaring at Han Qian, then grabbed his arm and dragged him to the first floor, straight to Gucci. Han Qian tilted his head to look at Wen Nuan, shaking his head repeatedly. Wen Nuan huffed,
“You’ve got less than three hundred bucks left. You can’t afford anything here! Go mess with the salespeople; I want to see if Rongyao’s sales staff are all this patient.”
So it was a test. Han Qian sighed in relief and followed Wen Nuan into Gucci. Once inside, Wen Nuan left Han Qian behind, wandering lightly among the suits, occasionally picking one up and holding it against Han Qian.
Plaid was too flashy for work.
Black was too formal.
White… white was out of the question; it made him look too handsome, not safe.
Wen Nuan wasn’t sure where the idea of “not safe” came from, but white was definitely out.
Gray, that would do!
Wen Nuan pointed at a gray suit, then at Han Qian. Han Qian knew Wen Nuan’s figure, and Wen Nuan was equally familiar with Han Qian’s height. With a puzzled look, he was ushered into the fitting room by a few young saleswomen. Wen Nuan then picked out a simple white shirt, the cheapest gray one, yet even the cheapest was more expensive than the dress Wen Nuan wore.
Han Qian was quick, tidying his hair as well. He approached Wen Nuan, tapping her shoulder and frowning.
“Why try on a suit? The saleswoman just said…”
“Shut up.”
Wen Nuan turned around, stepped back, and scrutinized Han Qian from head to toe, one hand on her chest and the other pinching her chin. Not bad! The gray was much more subdued, his broad shoulders and upright posture paired with his buzz cut gave him the look of a dashing rogue in a suit.
Very handsome, very mature.
Wen Nuan didn’t compliment Han Qian either. She made a hush gesture towards him and walked over to the counter. With her back to Han Qian, she sneakily pulled a card from a black plastic bag and handed it to the cashier.
Transaction successful!
Turning around, Wen Nuan flashed a sly fox-like grin at Han Qian and laughed, “Han Qian, you owe me four million and thirty thousand! Haha! Work hard to pay it back. This princess is off now!”
And with that, Wen Nuan dashed away!
Han Qian stood there, wide-eyed and bewildered. Three pieces of clothing for thirty thousand? He then whispered to the cashier, “Wait a moment, I’ll catch her and exchange it for something cheaper.”
The cashier didn’t take his words seriously. From the moment that fairy-like girl entered the store until she paid, she hadn’t asked a single question about the prices.
Wen Nuan, in her canvas shoes, exaggeratedly waved her arms, giggling non-stop. Beside her, Han Qian looked as if he were about to cry. He hadn’t even started repaying his debt, and now he owed another thirty thousand? He glanced at the receipt in his hand.
Suit: twenty-eight thousand.
Shirt: three thousand nine hundred ninety-nine.
Even if he worked without eating or drinking for half a year, it wouldn’t be enough to buy these clothes. Han Qian turned to Wen Nuan with a mournful expression.
“Your Highness, the clothes are a bit tight. Can we go back and exchange them? I promise I won’t return them.”
“No way, your princess knows you want to swap for something cheaper.”
“It’s too expensive, it pains me.”
When Han Qian said this, Wen Nuan stopped in her tracks, turned around, and looked at him seriously, speaking softly, “You have less than fifteen hundred in your hand, and you spent twelve hundred on clothes and shoes for me. It’s not much, but it’s everything you have. I have eight hundred thousand in my account, and I bought you a thirty thousand suit. So what? You think it’s expensive, I think it’s cheap. Han Qian, last night was indeed your fault, but I know if I called you first and told you I was sick, you’d drop everything and come home to see me. Don’t let guilt eat at you. I don’t want to owe you either. Let’s leave it at that, okay? Don’t make me, Wen Nuan, feel too embarrassed or humble. We’re not a couple anymore; we’re best friends, the closest of confidants. Is it only you who has the right to buy me clothes and take care of me when I’m sick? I have that right too. Alright! I’ve dragged you around all morning, I need to get to work.”
“Alright!”
Still just one word.
