Summary
The Empress thought I had more bosom than brains, so she never let me join in her palace intrigues.
Yet on the day she died, she entrusted the deposed crown prince to me.
And told me to eat more walnuts.
But I didn’t like walnuts, and I knew nothing about looking after children.
So I said no.
Then, half a month later, I found the deposed crown prince fighting a stray cat for food in the Cold Palace.
My heart softened. I gave him a chicken drumstick I’d pinched from the imperial kitchens.
With tears in his eyes, he told me I looked like a fairy from heaven.
My heart softened again.
Perhaps having a son wouldn’t be so bad after all.
