Summary
My husband, who had always complained that I reeked of money, suddenly offered to take me on a spring outing.
I was so delighted I hardly slept that night. I hired the finest country estate outside the city for the day.
But when I went to board the carriage, I found his widowed sister-in-law sitting in my place.
He had her son in his arms, playing with the jade whistle I had paid a fortune for.
“My sister-in-law is delicate, and Yan’er gets carriage sick. Go squeeze in with the maids in the carriage behind us.”
Leaning against his shoulder, the widow smiled sweetly.
“Don’t be upset, Sister-in-law.”
“If Yan’er hadn’t wanted a spring outing, you might not have had the chance to leave the house at all today.”
My husband nodded. “The outing was for my sister-in-law and Yanqing to begin with.”
“You’re only coming along because of them. What gives you the right to be so particular?”
I understood. Turning, I called the coachman over.
“Throw all three of their things out.”
“Cancel the estate, too.”
“Since my husband finds me such an embarrassment, the three of you can pay for your own little family outing.”
