Summary
Two years after Zhong Qi disappeared, a mole appeared in the palm of my right hand.
A fortune-teller said it was proof that I had fallen for a faithless man.
I did not believe him—until I met Zhong Qi in a crowded street.
He wore fine clothes now, nothing like the unassuming boy from our fishing village. A beautiful young woman stood beside him.
The joy of finding him again gave way to anger and hurt.
I slapped him hard across the face.
The young woman flared up. “What country girl goes around hitting people for no reason?”
Zhong Qi’s face betrayed nothing. “If you have something to say, say it. Striking someone in the street—have you no sense of propriety?”
But what did a country girl care about propriety?
All I remembered was his promise.
If he ever lied to me again, I could throw him into the sea to feed the fish.
