Summary
The night before our wedding, our friends threw a joint bachelor and bachelorette party for Song Zhiyao and me at a bar.
After a few rounds of drinks, someone suggested a game of “Do You Dare?”
The bottle landed on me first.
My younger brother grinned. “Do you dare take your pants off?”
“Let everyone see what you’ve got.”
The whole table erupted in cheers.
I glanced at Song Zhiyao. She was looking down at her phone. She didn’t speak up for me.
I had no choice but to take them off, leaving my underwear on.
The second round landed on me again.
My older sister raised her glass and said, half joking, “Zhou Xubai, do you dare admit you’re pathetic? That you can’t live without a woman?”
My face burned.
But everyone was watching, waiting for me to spoil their fun.
I closed my eyes and answered hoarsely, “I do.”
Eventually, the bottle landed on Song Zhiyao.
A friend asked with a grin, “Do you dare tell your husband what you sneaked off to do last night?”
Song Zhiyao paused for two seconds, then looked at her childhood friend Xu Chuan beside her. Her eyes softened with affection.
“He got drunk and insisted I take him back to his hotel.”
“Then he threw up all over himself, so I bathed him and changed him into his pajamas.”
“He said he didn’t want to sleep alone. I held him until morning.”
The private room went quiet, then burst into knowing laughter.
Xu Chuan tickled her in mock reproach, calling her a little brat for airing his embarrassing secrets again.
I stood frozen, unable to speak.
Finally, Song Zhiyao’s best friend pointed to the couples’ marriage-registration event the Civil Affairs Office was running in the middle of the bar.
“Then do you dare take Xu Chuan over there and get a real one?”
Xu Chuan looked at her, his eyes bright.
I looked at her too.
But Song Zhiyao only smiled indulgently, took his hand, and led him into the cheers.
In that moment, I suddenly felt there was no reason to hold tomorrow’s wedding.
