Summary
Eighteen-year-old Nianhe Su has spent her life hiding a secret: when she is well fed, her body releases a sweet scent and milk she cannot control. To escape a drunken father determined to sell her to an aging widower, she flees Liuhe Village and becomes a live-in maid for the prominent Shen family in Jiang City.
Nianhe intends to keep her head down, earn enough to survive, and leave before anyone discovers her condition. But the compound is full of watchful eyes, vicious gossip, and men willing to exploit a vulnerable village girl. The last person she expects to protect her is Huai Shen, the youngest cadre at the light textile mill—a cold, disciplined engineer whose self-control has never failed him.
As household schemes push Nianhe toward a practical marriage and danger closes in, Huai’s restraint begins to crack. Yet desire alone cannot bridge the gulf between a penniless maid with no safe home and the mayor’s privileged son. In a changing 1980s China, both must decide whether love can become the security, dignity, and future Nianhe has never had.
